  1. UND did scout him and he had a terrible game with a coach there. I think UNO offered before UND got a second look.

I have also heard that our previous associate head coach told him that he wasn't good enough to play division I hockey. If UND was going to offer, it wasn't going to be while he was in high school. He was going to need to prove himself in the USHL.

  2. Is UND recruiting Ryan Norman (SSM)? I have heard a ton on him however I can't find any link verifiyng commitment other than a Goofer website noting he is a recruit (which I am guessing means he's verbally accepted). I didn't know his pops played in GF.

He is a Gopher committ so I would say no. I think I read something when he committed that he was a Gopher fan and I don't know if it mentioned if the Sioux were in on him or not.

  3. I asked Schloss in the herald chat last week and he thought Mantha would probably play another year in the USHL. He thought the guys that will be in for sure next year are forwards Schmaltz, Olson, and Simonson, D Poolman, and G Johnson. He said the questionable ones will be Gersich, Poganski, and Wilkie but if any of them come I would guess it would be Gersich. Also wonder about some who have been committed but not really produced like Voltin and Rowe and if they will ever make it to UND.

I've wondered if these two, along with Charlie Pelnik, will ever make it to campus. They all can play another year of juniors with Voltin and Pelnik still eligible for two more I believe. It seems like these three have been committed forever.

  4. With Tambo leaving, I wonder if Hak and the boys go hard/harder after Cameron Hughes? Obviously it opens up scholarship money immediately that wasn't available. I would like to see the kid end up here just based on what I have read and the teams that are after him.

  5. I think this really is a set back for next year's team that was shaping up to be pretty talented. He reminded me of Brock Nelson his freshman year although less talented. You can see the skill but he just needs to put on some weight and get stronger. His development was on the same path if you ask me. Remember Brock didn't do a whole lot his freshman year all but on a pretty loaded team.

  6. I thought all of the following were head scratchers:

    Hamhuis

    Vlasic

    Nash

    Carter

    Kunitz

    Marleau

    Ahead of these guys:

    St. Louis

    Seabrook

    Boyle

    Giroux

    Thornton

Couture (depending on his injury status)

    Neal

On head scratchers for other countries, how about Sweden leaving off Hedman and Brodin on D when their D isn't all that strong and Semin being left off Russia. The Czechs left of some NHL talent forwards as well for a country not all that strong at the forward position. Hopefully it all plays out well for the USA!

  7. He just turned 17, I'd say he has at least another year of juniors.

It sounds like Hughes will be visiting Wisconsin this weekend and that they have a good chance of landing him. UMD and UND are also interested but it looks like Wisconsin is the favorite because they need forwards badly for next year and can offer 2014 whereas UND would likely be 2015 and I'm not sure on UMD.

  8. Will see if Parks OD and Mark can get anything going.

Murphy out again...Panz at forward. Not good to be a scratch to a Dman playing forward.

I was thinking the same thing. I like the lines other than Panzarella in on the wing. I would rather have Murphy in there without a doubt. I just don't like playing a D at forward especially one with very little offensive ability.

  9. Saturday vs BU was one game...his total body of work as a college hockey player suggests otherwise. He is servicable as a role player at best. I was at both games this weekend and he did "little" and he wasn't noticable all weekend.

Yes he didn't have a good year last year but it is looking like he is going to have to play a top 6 role this year. He is far from our most underwhelming forward to date. This year's forward group is going to have to find their roles and I don't see this team having any chance if Pattyn is one of our top 6 forwards. He is and always will be a third/fourth line penalty kill guy at best and I know he is playing that role due to injury which is why we need to get healthy fast.

  10. I saw Friday, not Saturday.

We can disagree on the Rocco vs Nelson assessment, but here are the facts that sway me. 28 goals by Nelson in 11-12, 4 for Rocco so far. Nelson a #1 draft pick, Rocco a #2. 6 foot 3, 5 foot 6. I like Rocco, but I think Nelson simply has a better knack around the net, and last I checked it was goals scored, not scoring chances that put Ws on the board.

What are the differences in this team vs that team in personnel upfront?

Rocco and Jewels and Chyzyk vs Kristo and Knight and Nelson (advantage 2011-2012 team)

Mark Mac and OD and Parks vs Mark Mac and Parks and Rowney(mostly same guys- pretty much a draw in talent, but 2011-2012 Rowney scored 18 goals...)

The General, Gaarder and Rodwell/Mitch vs Mario, Gleason and Pattyn(pretty much a draw, if anything 2011-2012 advantage for Mario's green blood)

Tambellini, Murphy, and Johnson vs Senkbeil-Gaarder-Usually a Double shift for Nelson(upside potential won by 2013-2014, but thee guys have a combined 3 goals and 7 assists so far...not exactly killing it)

Fixed your post above on the lines from 2011-12. We were short two forwards so Gleason played on the third line with Mario and Pattyn and Gaarder and Senkbeil were on the fourth line with someone double shifting usually Nelson.

As far as the Nelson vs. Rocco comparison realize the difference between the twos linemates. As evidenced by Friday night this past weekend, Rocco has to carry the load whereas Nelson had great talent around him with Knight and Kristo. Big difference but they are totally different players.

  11. Anyone have any insight on whether or not we are interested Cameron Hughes? I've heard many big schools are after him but many, like UND, don't have any spots open for next year. Maybe he could be a replacement for Gropp?

  12. Colton better be less than 100% to not be in lineup. That surprises me...the lovefest with Mitch doesn't surprise me any more.

Like Luke up the middle w Rocco and Drake.

I'm with you. There are 4 guys in the lineup tonight that I would prefer St. Clair over. I like his game especially as a penalty killer.

  13. Sounds like Drake will be in lineup tonight...amazing after witnessing his fall Saturday.

My question is does Mitch play after looking ok vs. a USHL team?

Tough to say but if Drake is able to go I like the lines from the Miami series. I don't see any real weak lines with Tambellini-Cagguila-Grimaldi, Parks-MarkMac-O'Donnel, Murphy-Johnson-Chyzk, Gaader-Pattyn-St. Clair. I could see Rodwell working his way onto that fourth line possibly and maybe Mitch in instead of Chyzk on the third.

  14. The issue I have is Mattson is good for about a goal/game against with his play in the D zone and Mitch paraded to box a lot last weekend as well but seems to contiue to be a top 6 forward without any production. Panz was not great Friday but Mattson and Mitch were brutal all weekend.

I agree with your assessment of Mitch but you have something against Mattson. I thought he was alright last weekend and should be a staple on the backend all year.

  15. The players I am worried about are Voltin, Wilkie, Rowe (I believe) and Poganksi. There numbers so far in the USHL are pretty bad. I know that isn't the end all however one has to start wondering what there upside is. They are young but there are other players just as young tearing up the USHL right now going to other schools.

Wilkie and Poganski don't worry me much since they are young and new to the league. It may take them a little time to get used to the pace and the strength of the players. The other two you mention worry me since they have been in the league for at least a season. In Rowe's case for quite a few years even though he has been injured quite a bit.

  16. Sounds about right. Does UND try and get another for next year or as noted they have plenty coming in

That's an interesting question. The Sioux have many forwards lined up for future years with the possibility of Schmaltz, Wilkie, Gersich, Poganski, Olson, Rowe and Voltin for next year. It will be interesting to see who gets brought in. I think Schmaltz and Olson are the only guarantees at this point. I was wondering if this opens up the possibility of a guy like Tyler Sheehy? Not sure if there is interest either way just throwing it out there to see if anyone has any insight. I'm thinking it would be a long shot though.

  17. He may not sit a game all year, I was just referring to this weekend and what type of D men they would play possibly vs a Miami team. Simpson and schmaltz won't miss a game then you have the 4 talented fresh. Still way early in the season to make any evaluations I suppose either way. yes you are correct as didn't think I would mention him sitting. But what the hell do I know :) ha not much just love fri and sat sioux hockey!!

I do remember that recruiting process with UND and gophs, he was a young young signing that's for sure. I believe Colten st Clair even commited to CC when he was 14. That's a head scratcher and a topic well written about in brads articles at week.

If I was to guess Friday

    SIMPSON

    SCHMALTZ

    MATTSON

    AUSMUS

    STECHER

LADUE/THOMPSON(one of the two them flip flop sat maybe)

    PANZERELLA

I don't know why all the hate for Mattson. I thought he was just fine last weekend. I would be willing to guess that Simpson-Schmaltz and LaDue-Mattson are set and the third pairing is the toss-up. After last weekend, I think we see Ausmus-Stecher Friday and go from there. I thought Thompson definitely looked like a young freshman D on Saturday night. I don't recall him getting a shift in the last 10-12 minutes of the game and OT.
