  1. My opinion is we never chose a new nickname and stick with North Dakota. Eventually I may get myself to pay ridiculous prices at the Siouxshop for something that doesn't have the fighting sioux logo on it. I'm guessing that won't happpen but as an alum that is my vote.

  2. Does Archibald stay at UNO? Will his stock and leverage next year be as high as it is this year?

I was thinking the same thing. He is a Penguins draft pick so it will be interesting to see if they can entice him to sign or not. I would think they would make a good effort to do so.

  3. The games that defined the season( so far) are the games one is "supposed" to win:

    The Vermont tie

    The BU tie

    The BU loss

    The St. Lawrence loss

    The Bermidgchee tie

And the CC first round loss

Those games, the ones that had to be won and should have been won.

The difference between a 1 seed lock (3 or 4 overall) and this very precarious situation.

Its all subjective but those games in particular really made impact.

But who knows 2 games left for sure and maybe 6....their fate is in their own hands and there are many many many teams who wish they had that luxury.

The Bemidji tie is the one I'm most curious about. Would anyone have an idea of what a win instead of a tie would have done for our pairwise currently?

  4. Back when UND played the Gophers in the Final Five (2 years ago?), what was the approximate split of the crowd in terms of Minnesota fans/UND fans? I realize this will probably be just an opinion?

From my recollection of being at this game, there were 18,000 Gopher fans there for the first 35 minutes of the game and 18,000 Sioux fans there for the last 25.

  5. Survive and advance is what really matters at this time of the season but definitely some things to clean up in practice this week. Gotta be better on the breakout and really cut down on the turnovers. Ladue has been very solid all year but the last 2 games he has definitely struggled and we can't afford bad turnovers like the 2 he has made the last 2 nights that ended up in the back of the net so I hope he gets back to playing the way he can. I thought we played well at times tonight and really brought it but other times there definitely seemed to be a lull too. Have to be stronger in front of our net tying up sticks and clearing players to give Zane a chance. Get on Miami early on Friday and make them remember what happened the last time they were on the ice with this Sioux team.

I agree tenfold on this. #6 looked like a freshman this weekend. He has been maybe our best, most consistent d-man most of the year but this weekend he just didn't have it. He was a couple seconds late on his decision making which cost us the 2 goals you mentioned above. Hesitation kills and he was hesitant way too much this weekend. Let's hope the real #6 shows up in Minneapolis.

  6. On my DVR (Comcast Twin Cities) it says Fox Sports North PLUS is showing "NCHC Hockey". Doesn't say who. Based on viewership, I'd hope they pick UND. Based on geography, they may pick UMD or SCSU.

I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be St Cloud-Miami.

  7. SCSU is first in the conference, so I don't think losing to them is cause to assume the boys are back to early season form. And you're selectively choosing the last 10 periods because, if you said the last 11, the number of goals would jump from 4 to 9.

As for Western, I kind of equate them to a good Mankato team...not the most skilled ever, but a few great players and always a tough, hard fought game. So I don't think losing one to them is indicative of losing the mojo either, especially considering how even the game was throughout.

It very well may take UND three games to get past CC, but I don't think the situation is as desperate as you make it out to be. But, maybe I'm being overly optimistic. I completely agree about the Thursday game, though. Especially if the playoff went to three games, you played the thursday play in game, won to play friday and saturday and then got placed in a regional that played Thursday/Friday the following week. Brutal.

Regionals are played either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday. There are no games ever on Thursday.

  8. EGF beat Warroad 3-2 in 2 OT in the 8A title game. Sylvester looked better than the last time I saw him but still doubt we are after him and it sounds like Bemidji is after him. UMD has got a couple good ones in Bethune and Roth although I still think Roth will need to put on muscle and learn to play more in his d zone he has a ton of offensive skill and Bethune just is a real good all around player and will probably be one we wished we got. From EGF I thought Poolman and Bowen really stood out tonight and while EGF wasn't at there best they still showed flashes. Tweeten and the younger Loven are also a couple that I like but I think Tweeten needs to become a little better skater still but he has room to grow.

I watched the game last night as well and agree with you on Tweeten. Given this was the only time I've seen him since last year's televised games, he looks like he needs to gain a few steps in his skating to play at the next level. He has nice size and is still young so he certainly has time to develop.

  9. Duluth East can do that to a lot of players but imo both Bischoff and Mattson are still just guys to keep an eye on and not ones that we should be offering already like some on the list are. Sounded like Peterson was dominant at times against East? He is one I wish we would have gotten and I'm sure we had interest in but I would guess the opportunity to play right away at Omaha appealed to him as it sounds like he will play there next year and if that is a case I can't really blame him.

Peterson looked good but was keyed on by Duluth East and they really took him out of the game. He scored a nice goal early but didn't create much after that. I thought Duluth East's Phil Beaulieu was the best player on the ice. He and his D-partner Alex Trapp played a lot and when they were on the ice controlled the game.

  10. I would think they would want to see him prove he can play against some decent competition in juniors, I doubt there is a whole lot of interest on the UND end right now.

There are some pretty good Minnesota high school players still uncommitted and lately that seems to be our focus. Looking at Juniors and Sophomores especially I would think the Sioux have interest in like forwards John Peterson (JR) Holy Family, Christiano Versich (JR) St.Thomas Academy, Jake Jaremko (JR) Elk River, Jonah Bischoff (SO) Grand Rapids, Mitchell Mattson (SO) Grand Rapids, Riley Tufte (SO) Blaine, Max Zimmer (SO) Wayzata, Zach Sitarz (SO) Andover, goalies Zach Driscoll (JR) Eastivew and Andrew Lindgren (JR) Eagan. These are just some of the good prospects and with the Minnesota state tournament starting next weekend I will probably post the top uncommitted prospects for each team once the teams are determined.

I went to the Duluth East-Grand Rapids game in Duluth this past weekend and was totally unimpressed with Jonah Bischoff. He played on Avery Peterson's line and if I hadn't known about him before hand and looked up which number he was I wouldn't have had a guess as to which one he was. Mitch Mattson seemed like a better player but wasn't the greatest in that game either but certainly has size just needs to get a lot stronger which is the case for most sophomores.

  11. Considering how shaky Canada has looked and how solid the U.S. has looked, it is a distinct possibility. But the history between these rivals indicates another close, hard-fought game.

Don't forget Canada didn't look all that great in Vancouver either until the games really mattered and they started to play some good teams. But with that said, Go USA!

  12. How many spots are open? The only one's I can see are Mitch Mac and Rodwell's and potentially N. Schmaltz's if he decommits. No one else is going anywhere except Rocco and that's a gigantic maybe as he has not been the player many of us thought he was going to be. By that, I mean putting up video game numbers. Don't get me wrong though, Rocco is my favorite player on the team I simply think he has not scored the way I initially thought he would.

I agree I don't see anyone leaving early and only losing Mitch and Rodwell at forward. Maybe we only bring in those 3 at forward and Poolman on D. I think there may be room to bring in another forward though as I think there should be scholarship money available at forward.

  13. I think Olson is a lock to come in too, I have heard that if Gersich is able to finish accelerating, he will be here next year as well. Even is J. Schmaltz leaves, I don't see any reason to bring in another defenseman, Poolman (who might win USHL Defenseman of the Year this year) will be hard pressed for playing time already.

Olson will be here next year as he will be too old to play another year of juniors. It will be interesting to see who they bring in other than Olson, Simonson and Schmaltz at forward.

  14. ..Why no 08?...

    a couple of ways I could answer this;

If I was going to be a wise guy I could say, Longer than you have been able to read well as I said "one of the better" not better than. I further qualified the statement with a "developing" into clause... But I'm guessing you are a gentlemen and thus would not deserve such a gruff response...

or I could answer your inquisition into my qualifications and say to you that you have me on 87. (Although Greg Johnson is my all time favorite Sioux player and Dixon Ward and Russ Romaniuk were fun to watch put the puck in the net) I saw my first game two years after the 87 team. Not that this matters because a comparison to that team would be silly at this point.

Having said that I would agree that this team is not the 97-99 team. As far as 04 and 11 go, I would say 04 was better (I was at World Arena when that all ended). 11, now that is a bit more of a question. That team was really good in many way but it's weakness was at defensive depth and completeness. It also relied a bit to much on Frattin's deadly shot (It was something to behold that shot!) but that is not relevant to this comparison because beside the goalie question, consistent scoring is this teams "need to improve" area.

I will explain why I think this team has a big one up on many of the recent great Sioux teams and could thus be on the verge of greatness in my response to Heaven no beers post. I am impressed by his response to my rhetoric. It was what I was fishing for. :whistling::silly::D

I have to comment on the bolded statement above and totally disagree with you as I can't think of another Sioux team that had as much defensive depth and completeness as that one. They were 8 D deep with Genoway-MacWilliam, Blood-Forbort, Marto-LaPoint, and Simpson-Gleason and the mix between big defensive D-men and strong skating offensive D-men was there. In my opinion, I would take the 11 team over the 04 team due to depth throughout the lineup. The 11 team was 4+ forward lines and 8 D deep. That team was made to win it all and it still stings me that they couldn't find a way to score on that little Michigan goalie.

  15. Forget about it I cannot remember. I am also not sure if the penalty was actually on him or if he was simply super pissed....I just remember the replay and we were all blown away by the phantom call.

It was the penalty on Caggulia that O'Donnell was shown yelling at the ref. Not the greatest call by any stretch but Caggulia was holding the D's stick.

  16. Johnson took two penalties tonite. Someone needs to have a conversation with him about playing smart.

The conversation should include Caggulia as well and it should be pretty simple. You have to stop jumping when you hit someone. I think we are lucky that neither of these guys have gotten a major for contact to the head.

  17. I have my doubts that happened. Several years ago I had the opportunity to stand down in the Sioux locker room with a good friend of mine who was a very good player back in the 70's. This former player had a son who was interested in playing at UND and I heard first hand how Eades stressed the importance of being part of the Sioux family and it was especially important as a legacy player. I was really impressed with the passion Eades had as he talked to this dad about how special it would be for this kid to follow in his dad's legacy. The kid didn't end up coming to UND but it certainly wasn't because of anything Eade's did or didn't do.

One thing you have to remember is that, back in the day, Blaiser was the one that did the recruiting of Jim Archibald to UND and has remained close to them. That most likely had more to do with Archies kid ending up in Omaha than what is being implied here.

That very well could be true. I didn't hear it first hand but was told of it happening. I have my doubts as well since it would seem quite odd any coach would say something like that.

  18. Maybe he didn't want to play here......

To expand further on what I mentioned in my previous post, someone I know ran into the Archibald's on the journey home from Omaha and asked why he went to UNO. The answer was simply UND wasn't interested and Eades told him he wasn't good enough to play Division I hockey.
