  1. Just because your FB coach may head to Bozeman does not mean your AD sucks. Geez......give him a break. He seems to be a pretty decent AD..... ;)

I agree. Being the AD is not a popularity contest. I'm sure it is quite the juggling act with the scheduling, budget and all the personalities that go along with it. Think about your own workplace. Do you get along with everyone? Do you think that your boss is always right? Until I hear that Buning is blatantly doing something to drive people away, I'm in the Buning camp.

  2. Judge delays ruling on NCAA request

Grand Forks Judge Lawrence Jahnke delayed ruling Thursday on an NCAA motion to dismiss UND's antitrust claim in the legal battle over the school's continued use of its Fighting Sioux nickname.

In an order e-mailed to UND and NCAA attorneys, Jahnke said he would not rule on the NCAA motion until both sides complete their discovery processes Sept. 7. Jahnke stated his decision to delay judgment should not be interpreted as a statement on the merits of UND's antitrust claim.

“This deferral should not to (sic) be construed by either party as an indication by the trial court that it feels the antitrust claim does or does not have merit,” Jahnke wrote. “However, the court feels that the NCAA's motion for a dismissal of that particular claim is a bit premature.”

I see this as both good and bad news for Sioux fans. Bad news in that the costs for lawsuit will increase more, but I also believe that this puts more pressure on the NCAA to perhaps settle out of court. Even if the NCAA believes they are right on the issue of antitrust, the judge may not see it their way. I'm not sure how much precedence they have on this issue. Any legal minds have any insight on that??

  3. Great interview in the Herald with Lennon - Way to go Wayne, you answered all our questions. By the way is Wayne an employee of UND or the Herald? Hard to tell.

What question did you want answered that didn't get answered? Did you want Lennon to air any concerns or problems with his current position? I can't see Lennon doing that even if he does leave. Too classy for that.

  4. This is hilarious. The man compliments your coach and you have to find some ulterior motive? We don't even play you nor will we for the forseeable future and yet there is still some kind of conspiracy or motive behind his article? Way to funny. You would have been bashing him if he had written an article saying why Dale wouldn't be considered and giving his reason for that. Then you'd still be whining about how he's wrong only because he's an NDSU alum. What a Maroon.

Yes, I agree that the article was complimentary to Lennon and I, as most UND fans, hold Coach Lennon in high regard, but I stand by my statement that it should be taken with a grain of salt considering the person who wrote the article is from NDSU. Most of the articles that I have read regarding this coaching position have been very neutral toward all of the candidates, so of course this would raise an eyebrow.

Perhaps I'm too cynical, it wouldn't be the first time.

  5. I would like to think Lennon isn't using the MSU job as political ammo and that he would have dropped out if he wasn't truly interested, but who knows.

The point about Van Diest is spot on. The path of least resistance for Fields would be to name him and move on.

As I've said in previous posts, I think Lennon is the best candidate, but given the situation in Bozeman, Van Diest is probably the right man in the right place at the right time.

From what I have heard/read Van Diest will likely be the next coach at either MSU or Montana, with the other one wishing they had him. Sounds likely, then, that MSU would be crazy not to take him now.

  6. Is there no checking of facts in journalism anymore?

Carroll's Van Diest a finalist for MSU coaching job

Head coaches Dale Lennon of North Dakota State University and Rob Ash of Drake University along with assistant coach Larry Kerr of Duke University are the others under consideration.
A former standout at NDSU, Lennon has led the Fighting Sioux to one Division II national championship, one runner-up finish and four North Central Conference championships since returning to his alma mater as head coach in 1999.
  7. I have to ask, exactly what "fake" sport has NDSU added to meet Title IX?

Beyond that, I think what we're seeing here is a difference in collegiate athletic models. Mburtonk seems to favor a DIII-style "participation" model where the athletic department is almost an arm of student services. In this model, the focus is normally on the student-athlete. On the other hand, in DI, you usually find a "business" model where the athletic department fuctions as a public relations/fundraising arm of the university and its administration. Here, the focus is on the university as a whole rather than the individual student. DII sees both models or, more often, a hybrid of the two.

Both models have pros and cons, and most are rather obvious. In the DI model, some students get to participate is something larger than themselves. They're part of a history, a tradition of excellence. Of course, that means many students are excluded from participating. The DIII model allows general participation, but misses out on the remarkable potential the athletic department has to improve the university's status on many levels. The wonderful thing is that there is ample room for both models in the overall university system. Other than the general philisophical debate of sports in college, the only time this becomes a major issue is when a school begins to transition from one model to another. I would argue that UND has been using a largely DI model for quite some time ,and will soon be making a transition to a fully DI model. This will invariably cause some hard feelings for students, alumni, and supporters who favor a more DIII-style model.

    Just my opinion.

I believe that Jim was referring to the equestrian comment made by mburtonk in post 287. SDSU has added the "sport" and from what I recall NDSU has talked about adding it.

  8. Love of road is driving force behind Tom Brosseau's songs

He performed the set for Grand Forks dignitaries and even got a key to the city, but going back to the place he'd written about presented an experience he was not expecting.

"I don't know if it is because I've been gone for a while, traveled so much or just had a different representation of the town in my mind, but things are not always the same as you remember them," he said. "I loved playing there and we had such a great response ... it just feels like I may remember it now as more of a fictitious place."

  9. "I felt that the timing was right was right to accept an opportunity in our hometown that will allow me to spend more time with my family and still stay in hockey to a lesser extent," Johnson said.

My guess is that he is going to somehow be involved with REA.

  10. I'm still trying to figure the Fargo Forum people on this one. One of their reporters has the correct information and puts it into her article. Her "bosses" then get in wrong?? Clearly or unclearly, something is going on behind the scenes on this one. Is it coincidence that Mr. Dunn's editorial is printed on a Sunday of a holiday weekend where no one sees it?

I would have thought our own pseudo reporter would have been all over this one. :silly:

  11. MATTERS AT HAND: Committee should find a president who can build opportunity at UND

The list of appointees to a search committee for UND's next president was released Thursday, and my name wasn't on it. This is a big disappointment to me. My name was on a preliminary list. The truth is I had sought the job, and I did get the offer.

But in the end, I had to turn it down.

It's just too great a conflict.

So, the search should not be exclusively local. The committee should search far and wide for the next president, and committee members should be prepared to consider carefully what they find.

Ambition is a qualification to be UND's president. A young person with eyes on a larger institution should not be disqualified. In fact, search committee members ought to consider whether the candidates they recommend might move on to one of the nation's premier institutions, distinguishing UND in the process.

The important thing is not to be limited, to recognize that the presidency of UND is not just an important position to us, but an attractive position for the ambitious and the talented.
