  1. Sioux land junior college point guard

UND men's basketball coach Brian Jones and assistants Ryan Moody and Chris Johnson have seen a lot of the United States this summer, looking for players to round out the 2007-08 Sioux roster.

“We've been on the road a lot,” Jones said.

Their trips have produced the signing of one player. And it's possible another recruit will sign with the Sioux next week.

And they're hoping their trips to summer all-star tournaments in such places as Las Vegas and Orlando will lay the recruiting foundation for UND's move to Division I starting with the 2008-09 season.

The Sioux recently signed Darius Joseph, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound point guard from Lamar (Colo.) Community College, to a letter of intent. The signing of Joseph is expected to give the Sioux considerable size and athleticism in the backcourt.

UND considers him an impact player.

Still looking for one more big guy.

  2. For some reason I'm thinking a lot of questions will be answered in the next week regarding football promotions for this year, as well as years to come.

UND Football Executive Committee strategize future of football program

The group was able to outline several strategic goals, which will be defined in a report highlighting the weekend. That report will be presented to the public on July 29 at the UND Football Letterwinners Golf Tournament in the Twin Cities. More than 200 football alumni, former and current coaches are expected to be present to hear the report
  3. Sun Belt not looking to add JSU

The commissioner of the league that some Jacksonville State football supporters have their eyes on says there's no room for the Gamecocks.

Meanwhile, Jacksonville State Athletics Director Jim Fuller expressed surprise that a move to the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A, was brought to the forefront in Monday's board of trustees meeting.

The JSU board's athletics committee formed an exploratory subcommittee to discover the pros and cons and costs of moving from the Football Championship Subdivision to the FBS.

Waters said the University of Denver, which does not play football, is likely one day to leave the Sun Belt for a more western league, but he doesn't foresee any other defections or any mass shakeup in other conferences across the country.
  4. Alerus Center to charge for parking

Grand Forks' Alerus Center will begin charging for parking at major events starting with the first UND football game Aug. 23, the center's commission agreed today.

It's a move that the commission hopes will boost the center's bottom line. At the same time, it could encourage carpooling and use of shuttle buses, relieving the congestion in the parking lot and on nearby streets during major events.

For those of us who are used to parking to go see an event this is no big deal. I'm sure there will be some that won't like it.
  5. Just paid for my suite today, nickleback was great, can't wait for football, hope we can run the table, didn't drink at the tavern, drank at Overtime, great to see the danner boyz sweating their ass off!!!!!!! Go Sioux!!!!!!!!!

You just paid for your suite at the Canad or the Alerus? If it is the Alerus, can I be your new best friend? :)

  6. Our pictures of the Blue Angels didn't turn out nearly as well as PCM's, so I'm not going to embarrass myself. I did like the loop picture we got of one of the preliminary acts. Also a picture of the boats piled into the intercoastal to watch the show and one of the boat that we were on to watch.

    Great time!!

  7. Pause in Nickname Lawsuit Welcomed

A spokesman for the NCAA says the organization welcomes a pause in the lawsuit over the University of North Dakota`s Fighting Sioux nickname.

A Grand Forks judge has ordered both sides to stop making document requests for almost a month. The goal is to give attorneys for UND and the NCAA more time for negotiations.

NCAA spokesman Chuck Wynne says the order is welcome. He says settlement talks have been going on -- and the NCAA is hoping a compromise can be reached.

  8. Community connections

When a busload of UND deans swung through a few small towns in western North Dakota in October, townspeople weren't shy about telling them what they need: engineers to work in the western oil fields, health care workers to serve an aging population and an easier route for students to come east to the state's flagship university.

When UND Provost Greg Weisenstein made the trip again in April, he said, townspeople were impressed with the impact their words had.

One of the dean's longest stops in October was on the Fort Berthold reservation, where they visited students, administrators and faculty at Fort Berthold Community College. A common theme during the visit was the difficulty tribal college students often face in transferring to UND to complete a four-year degree.

Students' transition from a small, close-knit tribal community to UND and Grand Forks is often stressful, Fort Berthold administrators said, and can hurt grades and increase dropout rates.

A lot of great ideas came out of this tour.

  9. Pensacola is the home of the Blue Angels and they do two shows here annually, one during the summer at the beach and the other during the fall at NAS Pensacola. This weekend is the beach air show. Today they will be practicing and tomorrow is the actual show.

With both days expected to be cloudy, I'm assuming that they will be doing the "low show", which means that you may be able to watch parts of it on Pier Cam. It isn't always reliable and sometimes you have to close it and re-open it for it work. I don't know exactly what time practice is, but I'm assuming it will start around noon.

Here is link to some pictures from yesterday's practice.

My boss has a 38' catamaran, which will be our vantage point tomorrow.

  10. I had more accurate writing skills when I was in 4th grade.

Arkansas State Mascot 'Indians' Must Go, Committee Says

The NCAA's ban, which forces schools with Native American mascots to cover up uniform emblems and hide their nicknames during post-season events such as the March Madness basketball tourney or college bowl games, has forced several schools to reconsider the use of Native American imagery at sporting events, including the University of North Dakota which is currently fighting the ban in court.

Arkansas State is the last school on the NCAA's original list of 19 schools with "hostile or abusive" nicknames to take formal action toward changing their status.

One school on that list - Florida State University - successfully appealed the ban by touting its close relationship with the Seminole tribe of Florida. FSU will be allowed to use the "Seminoles" nickname and imagery even during the post-season. Illinois University can keep its "Fighting Illini" nickname but will have to cease using some of its imagery, including its popular "Chief Illiniwek" mascot.

  11. WOW!!!! I want both of them!! But, no way can I afford that kind of high tech especially because I don't know how to work those new fangled computer thingamajigs. I have trouble changing the ribbon on my manual portable type writer!!

You have a "portable" typewriter. Wow, you are way ahead of me. ;)

  12. Chicago Blackhawks - Pensacola Ice Pilots - UND Connection

Ice Pilots Team Up With Chicago, Rockford

Chicago possesses a slew of young talent including the number one pick from the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Patrick Kane, who had 145 points (62 Goals - 83 Assists) in 58 games with the London Knights (OHL) last season. Chicago also recently came to terms with its top pick, and third overall, from the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Jonathan Toews, who spent the last two years at the University of North Dakota.

Ice Pilots coach is John Marks, former Sioux and former Blackhawk.

  13. After spending a week in GF, I can see that it is not the "shithole" that the guy on Skyscraper makes it out to be. Not that I thought that anyway, but the growth GF has shown in the last 5-10 years has been amazing. I saw a number of new retail shops in the south end, the new hospital in the south end, the Canad and the additions to the campus over the past few years keeps the future at UND looking brighter. What really caught my eye was the downtown area. The Elite Brownstone project is just being completed, adding 27 condos downtown, Opera House Lofts and under construction The Current. I was also impressed with The Greenway. Quite an impressive and huge park. Keep it going GF.

  14. Unfortunate that the HQ will be placed in Little Rock, but somewhat understandable with air travel. Getting into GF just isn't that easy.

Perhaps GF could get a research center. It is the perfect place to do research for wind. :D

  15. It is sounding more and more as though softball and baseball are not a priority at UND. I know that I read recently that Buning intends to keep these two sports when the transition is made to Division I, but one has to wonder.

  16. After spending the past week in GF, most of which was spent at the Canad, I can't help but think that game day for football is going to be huge. How many other schools can claim to have a destination hotel attached to their football stadium. I can see the three restaurants and Playmakers bar being packed. I would also think that Tavern United would be wise to set up a tent outside in the tailgating area.

What really got me thinking about the potential was that there were evidently some wedding dances going on in some of the Alerus ballroom's on Saturday night and there was a steady stream in the hallway between the Alerus and the Canad.

Game day at the Alerus/Canad complex is loaded with potential.
