  1. I don't know how many other "groups" will be clamoring to get on the board, but I would think that the committee will be listening to alot of different groups and gathering information from them. I'm not sure exactly how the committee is organized. Will the members select a leader of the committe or is the new chancellor the head of the committee?

I'm hoping that all voices are heard and a solid choice is made. My comments regarding having an American Indian on the committee, as I said previously, would be one of inclusion. When a choice is made and an American Indian is on the committee, it can be said that "the committee made the choice", whether the American Indian member of some other member for that matter, didn't vote for the new president.

  2. From that view it's fine; I fear that someone will bring one issue as a "litmus test".

I would hope that a person with a "litmust test" would be outvoted, so that a person with their own agenda would not prevail. I can't imagine that any one candidate will be unanimous.

  3. Tornado add Mullins, Ludwig as coaches

Joining Mullins on the bench as the Assistant Coach will be former Dallas Stars defenseman and two-time Stanley Cup Champion, Craig Ludwig.
Ludwig, 46, went on to attend the University of North Dakota from 1979-1982, where he won two National Championships while playing for the Fighting Sioux. After winning a Stanley Cup with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986, he moved with the Minnesota North Stars to Dallas in 1993, and finished his career in 1999 after helping the Dallas Stars win their first Stanley Cup. Ludwig was an alternate captain for the Stars during his time in Dallas.
  4. Thankfully, tee-ball just ended this week for the year. My oldest was put on a team by the name of *cough, *cough, Wisconsin Badgers *cough. She could have been on the Maryland Terrapins, Florida State Seminoles or Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, but no, she gets the stinkin' Badgers. Thankfully, she didn't want to get an individual picture with, so I will just have a team picture to try and forget.

  5. That's not a good game to start playing. Why?

Where's the Aero representation? There are many students in the School of Aero, more than 3% of campus.

Now change Aero to Engineering and say the same thing.

Now change Engineering to "student athlete". There are 500 of those on campus (>3%).

I see the slippery slope to which you are alluding, but obviously the American Indian at UND is in a different light than the rest of the groups you mention. (UND To Celebrate Achievements Of American Indian Graduates, Dedicate American Indian Center) If included on the committee that person would either be "buying" into the choice of the new president or at the very least "be included" in the decision making process. All that I'm saying is that with all that is going on in the "Sioux" name issue, at the very least showing the perception of inclusion is not a bad thing.

  6. Indian groups worry about lack of voice

As the University of North Dakota begins its selection of a new president, some American Indian groups are concerned that their voices won't be heard in the process.

David Gipp, president of United Tribes Technical College in Bismarck, recently sent a letter to the State Board of Higher Education, requesting that an Indian member be appointed to the search committee. Current UND President Charles Kupchella plans to retire in January.

"It's just that there's such a large presence of American Indians on campus, it seems there should be a representative of that group on the committee," he said.

I can't say that I disagree with this. 420 students out of 13,000 is about 3%. One committee member would account for 6% of the total committee.

  7. I don't like the looks of this...

    * In addition, Muckler said team officials are "attempting to sign" defenseman Brian Lee, the ninth overall pick in 2005, and right wing Jim McKenzie, a fifth-round pick in 2004.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Lee just wrapped up his sophomore season with the University of North Dakota, and Muckler said there's a "possibility" he could come out early. McKenzie had 12 goals and 18 assists as a junior with Michigan State last season.

B-Sens coaching search to begin by next week

  8. Sure, I subject myself to spending 4 hours traveling up and down Hwy 98 this afternoon and y'all are having fun. I mostly blame Diggler, as it appears he had the most fun. Well I blame Buning, too, of course.

  9. I'm actually planning a Sioux weekend for the first weekend in November. It will be my first time watching a hockey game at the new REA. Both men's and women's hockey is home that weekend, along with the football team. Still waiting for the BB schedules to come out. I can't wait!!!

  10. I dont believe I said he WAS leaving ,what I said was "So taking all things into account it will not be a surprise to see him leave. If he stays it could only be for his love of UND and the football program here." And you say "Wow you were pretty close there!", do you honestly think Lennon wasnt very close to leaving? If so think again! And yes he did stay, but it was based on what I said and what he felt was best for his family at this time. Those things outweighed his dislike for the AD. I for one am not willing to take that chance each and every time Lennon or Hakstol has a new opportunity.

It is really pretty common knowledge that there are severe problems within the athletic department among him and the rest of the staff, between him and the alumni association , and between him and many of the coaches, and I would in fact say between him and for lack of better words all the coaches that matter. You wont be able to tell this at a pregame function in St Paul or St Louis, where all parties have their "public" faces on, but there are real and serious problems. Whether you choose to believe me or the others that posted similar comments regarding the situation that is your choice.

And what I said about Hakstol was "AND SO EVERYONE IS AWARE THE NEXT COACH IN LINE FOR A SITUATION VERY SIMILAR TO THIS ONE IS HAKSTOL. HE IS IN THE LAST YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT AND HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR IS PROBABLY EVEN WORSE THAN LENNON'S. HAKSTOL IS A MAN OF PRINCIPAL AND HOLDS TRUST AS A KEY PART, AND FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD HIS CURRENT REALTIONSHIP WITH THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR COULD IN FACT CAUSE HIM TO LEAVE." Maybe you missed the word COULD! Again,

I for one am not willing to take that chance. Maybe you arent aware, but Hakstol plays a much more improtant role in the success of the hockey team than does the AD!

In regards to "Im just stating that what makes what you believe more credible than my sources?", I dont know you or your sources and you dont know me or mine, but whether you take this as being arrogant or not (its not ment to be), but actually I really dont care how you or others take it, the fact of the matter is sources cant get any better or more legitimate than mine. Believe it or not, its your choice, but it in fact is a fact. I am not going to repeat the conversations word for word for you so that you have all the information. What I have said here regarding the problems between the AD and others is in fact very common knowledge and that is why what and how I have said it is not in any way breached the trust of the people who have told me about it. They and me are not the only ones aware of the problems, far from it! If I put out the exact details ,which not everyone is aware of , then it would breach the trust. The details will stay private, yet many people know the problem exists. If your source doesnt know the problem exists, then I would suggest you find a new one, because it is in fact pretty well known!

If things are as bad and as wide spread as you are saying, I would think that action is happening within the university, as someone else put it "behind closed doors". There are some pretty strong ties between the alumni association and the coaches and some pretty influential people. If the situation does not improve, I'm sure that the conflicts of which you speak will eventually be somewhat public and we will all have a great deal more information. Until that time, let's all support UND athletics.

  11. I'm on record in another thread as being in the Buning camp until I hear of some blatant problems within the Athletic Department.

Post modified because I sounded like an idiot, which usually doesn't bother me, but for some reason this time it does. ;)

  12. Rewriting the record books

Schmiesing leaves with eight individual records under her belt. She set two records in volleyball - most kills in a season and a career. She owns three basketball records - most rebounds in a season and most rebounds in a game as well as being tied for most rebounds in a game and steals in a game.

She also holds the school record in the discus.

Her prowess on the volleyball court earned Schmiesing a full scholarship to the University of North Dakota where she will be part of a program that will transition to Division I in two years.

"I'm very excited," she said. "I never thought I would be a Division I player. I thought Division II at the highest."

  13. Smart choice led Marks to attain career fame

Marks tasted success throughout his hockey life. He was an All-American in 1968 when his University of North Dakota team lost the NCAA final.

Later that year, Marks became the first U.S. collegian to be selected in the first round of the NHL Draft. Five years later, as a winger with the Chicago Blackhawks, he played in the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Montreal Canadiens.

"I didn't really expect to be a coach," he said.

He was lured into it by Gino Gasparini, now commissioner of the United States Hockey League. Gasparini was hired in 1981 as the North Dakota coach. He offered Marks a $14,000 salary as his assistant.
