  1. In my 8th grade science class we built rockets and launched them from the adjacent football field. I bought the biggest rocket that I could...a three stage monster that stood about three feet tall when complete. Alas...when the second stage motor ignited it broke from its supports pushing it and the third stage into the rocket body. The heat of the motor immediately burned the cardboard body in two. The cone section spun wildly and the burned out first stage fell to the earth.

    It was spectacular!

I recovered all sections and repaired the damage. It still sits in my old room at my mothers house.

Brings me back to when I was a kid building rockets that we used to buy at Benner's, downtown GF. We would build them and go over by RRHS and launch them, somehow attaching to the car battery. We launched one multi-stage, but I can't remember what happened, though. Benner's was my favorite store when I was a kid. They had everything hobby-wise a kid would want. ;)

  2. I'm sure thats what coaches at UND and USD are telling recruits right now. Nobody is going to go recruit telling kids "Theres a chance you may never compete for a championship of any kind for your entire career".

I think the key word is plan, but you are probably pretty close to right, aff.

  3. How are the weather conditions down there?

I worry that hot, humid southern weather will take its toll on our northern team after a day or two. We're not used to it in May (like we are in August).

Unfortunately the weather here has heated up a lot in the last couple of days. I was out at some sites on Tuesday and commented that it felt like July in ND. There was low humidity a light northern breeze and low 80's. Today the high is 90 and humidity is going up. Still, it isn't the oppressive heat that we get here in July and August.

    Go Sioux !!

  4. Quiet leaders who are willing to make difficult decisions

Kudos first to novelist Louise Erdrich, who quietly turned down an honorary degree from the University of North Dakota because she objects to the nickname "Fighting Sioux." Erdrich is one of North Dakota's greatest artists.

At some point the leadership at UND will realize that the prize for poor sportsmanship and illiberal stubbornness is simply too high.

It's amazing how she is lauded for standing by her principles, yet she chastises UND for standing up against the NCAA for being "labeled" "hostile and abusive". BTW, the definition of illiberal is "Narrow-minded; bigoted."

  5. UND LAWSUIT: NCAA asks judge to dismiss UND antitrust claim

NCAA attorneys asked a Grand Forks judge on Tuesday to dismiss the antitrust portion of UND's lawsuit against the association over a policy banning the school from displaying its Fighting Sioux nickname and logo in postseason play or hosting playoff games.

In a motion for partial judgement, the NCAA claims UND hasn't proven that the association's policy banning what it considers "hostile and abusive" American Indian imagery in postseason play will restrict competition at large, only that the policy puts UND at a competitive disadvantage.

  6. I'm sure that most of you have already been to the UND Facilities site and seen the great aerial photos they have of the campus and surrounding area. Warning, these are some big files.

    UND Aerial Photos

This one seems to capture the entire campus with the exception of Ray Richards. I had no idea that the Wellness Center was that big.

    Entire Campus

Edit: I take that back. Ray Richard is on it. I just didn't move the scroll bar over far enough.

  7. I wonder how much this proposed law will impact the number of Florida athletes in the BCS division.

Bill passed to require steroids tests for some high school athletes

Random tests for steroids will begin in July for high school athletes in weight lifting, baseball and football.

The House approved the bill Thursday and senators approved it Friday. Now it heads to Gov. Charlie Crist, who indicated he would sign it into law.

During debate, some senators said it didn't make sense to single out the three sports.

According to the article, New Jersey and Texas have also approved steriod testing.

  8. Devils 2006-07 rookie review

Just like last season, the New Jersey Devils biggest impact rookie was a former first-round draft choice and North Dakota Fighting Sioux alum. Last season is was Zach Parise making a big splash in New Jersey and this season it was center Travis Zajac.

The Devils went into training camp without a legitimate second line center, and though there was hope Zajac would be able to step right in after only two years of college hockey and no minor league experience, the common thought by most was that Zajac would be best served to apprentice in the AHL with the Lowell Devils before making the jump to the big club.

New Jersey fans have to be loving the Sioux.

  9. Seattle Metropolitans 1917 ?

    Ding-ding-ding-ding. We have a winner.

I'm beginning to think that you and I are the only ones playing. :silly:
