  1. USD is the preseason #1 per the Sporting News for men's basketball. Link

Whether or not they will be when we play remains to be seen of course, but with USD twice, Northern St, Iowa St., and possibly Montevallo on the men's schedule this season, it could certainly be an exciting year, or at least entertaining, if Coach Jones gets the program on track and the team playing well.

I checked the schedule and didn't see Montevallo. I know you said possibly, but isn't the schedule set yet? If the Sioux are to play Montevallo, would it be home or away? It would be just a short 228 mile road trip from here, if the Sioux are playing away.

  2. And now an NCC defensive player of the week.

Manke earns NCC Defensive Player of the Week honors

University of North Dakota junior Rory Manke has been named North Central Conference Defensive Co-Player of the Week for his play in UND's 38-34 comeback victory at Minnesota State on Saturday.

Manke, a native of Detroit Lakes, Minn., made a critical interception on the Sioux 15-yard line with 1:39 remaining in the fourth quarter to preserve not only UND's perfect record (6-0, 4-0 NCC), but its hold on first place in the NCC standings. Manke also finished with five tackles, including four solo stops.

Thanks for the timely int.

  3. Why is there suddenly a mountain lion season in ND?

    Because there are mountain lions.

    Why are there mountain lions?

    Because there is food.

    What food?

    Rats with hooves.

    I like ScottM's notion: I'm pro-mountain lion/cougar/puma/American jaguar.

And it all comes back to the jaguar ???

  4. So slaughtering cattle with a cartridge stun gun isn't considered 'murder' of defenseless animals? Electrical stunning of hogs and 'bleeding' them while they're still alive isn't 'murder' of defenseless animalls? Chicken slaughter is even more gross but they're not hunted so it must be ok?!?

If you're against hunting because you think of it as murder of defenseless animals and you eat meat from 'domestic' animals, you eat eggs mass produced by chickens, you drink milk from cows whose only purpose for life is to produce abnormal quantities of milk and you wear leather, cotton or wool, you're a hypocrite. But that's just my humble opinion...........

    Cotton?

  5. I was at a party in Louisiana when the game was on and was only able to get periodic updates on my blackberry. When I saw that the Sioux were down 34-24 and also thought that Mankato had the ball, I thought the game was over and didn't check back in again. I checked the Herald's website this morning and was shocked the Sioux had won. Thanks for all of the game information on this thread to WiSioux and all who posted, as it really helped understand what happened and what I missed. Wow, what a finish. Is this a team of destiny?

    GO SIOUX !!!!!!

  6. The Quiz: Danny Freund

    Impressive numbers...

Freund is the top rated passer in NCAA Division II. He's guiding the Fighting Sioux to a 5-0 start and an offensive average of 555.2 yards per game.

Individually, Freund has a 203.9 passer rating. He's completed 71-of-102 passes (69.6 percent) for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns with just three interceptions.

  7. UND Not in Schafer`s Future

For those who thought he was a possible candidate...

Former Governor Ed Schafer says he`s been approached to take the job as president of the University of North Dakota.

Schafer says it`s flattering, but he`s not interested.

The Republican says he`s been contacted by some people who think he should go after the position, but he says he has no plans to apply. Schafer lives in Fargo and is a partner in a business consulting firm.

  8. Yeah you're right. Let's give everyone on campus a gun just in case the worst massacre in American History happens that day. 13,000 guns on campus would make me feel safe and secure.

Did you ever stop and think that this rule could very well stop the next Virginia Tech? If this rule comes into play and the killer is caught with the gun before he/she has a chance to use it, would this rule still be dumb and unconstitutional if it saved lives?

I'm not advocating handing out guns at Twamley. Let's allow responsible citizens the "right" to have their own gun.

The killer at VT had a history of psychological problems. VT had ban on guns in place. He had guns in his room and he was not caught. I don't see where it helped there.

You were right Diggler, train wreck.

  9. It is ridiculous that this is even an issue! Citizens of the United States are free to own and use guns. It is constitutionally guaranteed. Period. That should be the end of the debate.

But since some people can not seem to understand that, I will continue. People kill people, not guns or drugs or cars or anything else you can think of. If someone dies because they took drugs, that is their own fault. I will never die from it because I will not abuse drugs. It is about personal responsibility and freedom. Look at how much stuff is smuggled illegally every year. If guns were banned nationwide, criminals would still get their hands on them. I know if I am instructed to stay in a dorm because a killer is lose on campus, I would much rather have a shotgun out and ready to go then sit there with nothing between me and the killer but a locked door. Also, I am a law abiding person, as is most everyone. Just because some idiot uses a gun improperly, should not mean that I can no longer use one.

    Totally agree.

Additionally, I believe that the fact that the VT killer knew that no one else would be armed probably made it a whole lot easier for him to do what he did. He knew he wouldn't be stopped.

It's beyond me how we can keep creating new laws for "gun control". The people who follow the laws don't need more laws and restrictions on them and the ones that are breaking the current gun control laws are going to break future ones. Eventually the only ones that will have guns will be criminals, the police and military. That doesn't make me feel safe.

  10. Proposal would ban guns in on-campus apartments

You could say people came to Tuesday's UND Apartment Community Council meeting packing heat.

About 35 people attended an open forum to discuss the council's recent proposal to ban storage of weapons, specifically guns, in UND apartments.

The majority of attendees were gun owners and students, but one politician was notably present, Rep. Donald Dietrich, R-Grand Forks, a lifetime National Rifle Association member.

According to the proposal, residents cannot store

  11. UND Men's Hockey 2007-08 Season Preview

The UND men’s hockey team has advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four for three years in a row. North Dakota’s seven NCAA tournament wins during that three-year stretch are tied with Boston College for the most in the nation. UND’s 11 WCHA playoff wins the past three seasons are two more than any other WCHA team.

Now as the Fighting Sioux prepare for the 2007-08 season, they do so with the knowledge that 15 of the players who suited up in last year’s Frozen Four are back this season.

“Experience doesn’t guarantee us anything,” Hakstol said, “but it does give us a base to work from. We have a good combination of skill and work ethic, and our experience level is something we need to take advantage of.”

I can't wait to see my first Sioux game in the Ralph next month. :glare:

    Go Sioux!!!!!

  12. I like the fact that a national organization is on board with the public disclosure issue. I think they missed the point about the "hostile and abusive", though.

The NCAA contends that the university's "Fighting Sioux" team name and Indian head logo demean American Indians and has prohibited the university from using either during NCAA postseason tournaments.
  13. Forum Co., Herald lawsuits seek transparency of courts

Of course, there are arguments peculiar to every individual instance. In the Sioux name case that is of most interest in Grand Forks, our argument is that this closure is well outside the guidelines that have been established for North Dakota courts.

We didn't rush into this judicial action. In fact, we waited almost a fortnight because we didn't want to jeopardize the possibility of a settlement in the case.

By late last week, it was apparent that no settlement was imminent, so we went ahead to challenge the judge's ruling sealing filings in the case.

Not least among the arguments against our action was one put forward by Judge Jahnke himself, who said that the one thing this case doesn't need is more attorneys' fees. What's more, he indicated in his initial order that the filings would be opened late in October. That's about the time our challenge of his order will be heard.

  14. Conference ends, a legacy remains

Historically, the North Central Conference has cut a wide competitive path through the world of NCAA Division II athletics.

In sports such as football and women's basketball, a contender for a conference title has been a de facto contender for a national title.

As such, the upcoming demise of the 85-year-old conference at the end of the 2007-08 school year will forever change the scene at the top of the Division II heap.

The schools themselves aren't going anywhere, but the bonds that kept them together - what many would argue pushed the conference collectively to national prominence - are vaporizing.

South Dakota and North Dakota - itself one of the key reasons for the long-time NCC superiority - are moving their programs to Division I, joining former rivals North Dakota State and South Dakota State. That has left schools such as Augustana and St. Cloud State to fend for themselves and most are joining the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference for the 2008-09 season.

Left behind will be an NCC competitive legacy that will live on in record books and personal memories.

  15. Pirates give Schneider second chance

Defenseman Andy Schneider knows hockey players don't often get a second chance, and he's trying make the most of such an opportunity with the Portland Pirates.

After sitting out nearly a season and a half because of a broken right wrist, Schneider is trying to make a comeback with the AHL team.

"He's a guy who has been identified," Portland Pirates Coach Kevin Dineen said. "He's a guy we're going to have expectations for, but we want to make sure he's healthy and conditioned to play."

The Portland coaching staff should get a good read on Schneider today or Sunday during preseason exhibitions against the Manchester Monarchs in Portland and Berlin, N.H.

Schneider sat out the rest of that season and all of last year.

"I went back home to North Dakota," he said. "Thankfully, (the Penguins) found some money for me, and I went back and finished up my degree."

Last May, Schneider was awarded a bachelor's degree in mass communications from the University of North Dakota.
