  1. Evidently, UND is recruiting California for softball now...

Erica Younan doesn't like to disappoint people. So when she decided to sign on to play softball at the University of North Dakota, the Chico star had to hesitantly break the news to all the other interested coaches. Of course there was one happy coach who didn't get a rejection call from Younan, and now she's banking on the local hurler leading the Fighting Sioux into Division I prominence.

"I saw her last summer at a recruiting tournament in Las Vegas, and she totally stood out because she threw harder than all but one pitcher there," said UND coach Sami Strinz. "Our goal was to find a flame thrower and that's what we found in Erica. We were really lucky, she was our number one recruit."

  2. More on the TAMUK game...

A&M-Kingsville will open its 11-game schedule next season on Aug. 28 at the domed Alerus Center in Grand Forks, N.D., against the Fighting Sioux. It will be the third consecutive season the Javelinas have scheduled 11 games.

"There were other opportunities and we did consider not doing it," Atterberry said of an 11-game schedule. "But we felt like this was a pretty good opportunity. Like I said, they've played at a high level at Division II and we want to go up there and compete."

  3. UND steps up scholarship campaign

When I posted the link to the possible new football stadium last week, I asked the question how does it look. There was a response that it was too open. Now I know why...

And in case Sioux football ever outgrows the Alerus Center, an outdoor stadium with a retractable roof is part of the facilities plan.

The biggest need, though, is an indoor practice facility. UND's master plan includes a practice facility with a 300-meter running track. The price tag is estimated at $15 to $19 million. Another facility in the master plan is a soccer field with a regulation running track.
UND also must find a way to address basketball. The men's and women's teams could at some point outgrow the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. School officials are looking at possible BESC expansion or playing in another venue, such as Ralph Engelstad Arena, for high-interest games.
  4. What did we always say about "Fighting Sioux"? It led people to learn more about the Sioux. The same concept applies to "Nokota."

If you tie the "Nokota" nickname to a horse logo, people will get the idea that the name has something to do with horses. Some people might simply assume that it's a way to abbreviate "North Dakota," which it is. Heck, at one time, UND athletes were widely referred to as "Nodaks." I like "Nokotas" or "Nokes" a lot better.

Does everyone know what a Terrapin is? Or a Tar Heel? No, but most college sports fans know which schools those names belong to. Those names create a unique identity for those schools. It doesn't really matter if everyone understands the context behind the names. "Nokotas" gives UND an opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind identity for itself.

We now have a short video that explains the connection of UND athletics to "Fighting Sioux." Why not make a similar video explaining why the Nokota horse was chosen at the symbol of UND athletics?

Until someone comes up with a better nickname, Nokotas is number one on my list, in the event that a change has to occur. I have also come to agree that merchandise sales would go much better with a nickname than without. It took me a while, but I got there.

  5. I do like PCM's "Nokota" idea, but that would take some educating of the public, which may be difficult marketing-wise as well. That being said "Nokota" does fit very well and someone had mentioned if/when football moves back outside that would be a nice mascot to lead the team out on the field.

BTW, DAK, love the avatar. I love geography, maps, aerial photos. Right up my alley.

  6. Again, for the "no moniker" crowd,

How do you market a null?

I mentioned the concept to a Gopher fan and the joke about North Dakota's moniker (in that scenario) being just like the state, a big empty place, rolled right off his tongue.

I'm not sure that I'm fully answering your question regarding marketing, but putting "DAKOTA" on the uniforms and utilizing the interlocking ND for the logo is a start. Marketing is obviously not my strong point, but I would think that a media campaign could be structured around "UND, the University of the Dakotas". Like I said, I'm not a marketing person, but that's a start.

  7. Just when we thought this whole nickname thing couldn't get any more zany....

The state Board of Higher Education unanimously accepted the settlement’s terms.

I can’t claim credit for the settlement. The AG actually wasn’t aware of the editorial when I mentioned it to him a few weeks ago. (There’s a fair chance somebody on his or the NCAA’s team knew about it, though.)

But I can claim credit for this: Our editorial board listened, discussed, debated among ourselves — and found a responsible middle ground, one that anticipated the issue’s ultimate settlement in every important way.

No other outlet in American opinion journalism does that on a regular basis. That’s the strength of an editorial board. That’s our advantage over talk radio and opinion sites on the Internet, almost all of which cater to the extremes.

  8. I'll toss another one out there for others to ridicule.

University of North Dakota Arrows. Arrows are not strictly a weapon of the Native Americans, so it cannot be pegged as Native American imagery. It is also on the North Dakota State Seal. Only one other college uses the name, Ursuline College in Ohio. You could even add an arrow to the interlocking "ND"

I still would prefer "no nickname" and "Dakota" on the uniforms, but as others have said that may not pass muster with the settlement.

  9. The plan that's been out for a long time was to connect the "bridge to nowhere" to another parking ramp on the east side of Columbia. Because of the parking problems on campus, that's going to happen regardless of whether a new stadium is built. The "bridge to nowhere" was always going somewhere, or it wouldn't have been built.

Agreed. I just talked to a contractor in GF about two weeks ago that confirmed where it was going. Just having a little fun, as the bridge has been a topic here before.

  10. If you build a stadium for 25K and later want to expand it, the later expansion should be part of the preliminary drawings. It's interesting to note that the turrets of Memorial Stadium remain standing and are dwarfed by the new stadium.

Also, aren't almost all football stadiums north-south in orientation?

    Stadium2.jpg

It also appears that there is a skyway going from Hyslop to the old Memorial. The "bridge to nowhere" from the new parking deck appears to go to a second parking deck (in the first picture posted) with another skyway from that parking deck to the new stadium.

  11. Anyone notice that in the other images, the current Fighting Sioux logo is gone? People are wearing the UND flame logo. Plus, football fans are attending games outdoors in shorts and T-shirts. I guess we should be prepared for global warming and life after the Fighting Sioux. :D

But it does still say Sioux in the end zone. Of course there is "Force of the North on the scoreboard.

  12. When good mascots go bad

The University of North Dakota made a fuss and appealed the NCAA's ruling not once but a few times, including filing suit in civil court. A compromise was recently agreed upon: the NCAA has given the university three years to convince the Sioux Nation that the term Fighting Sioux is not racially insensitive. From what I've read, the Sioux supported the NCAA's original decree and they aren't about to let the university persuade them to allow continued use of the Sioux name.

Don't be shocked if a financial agreement of some kind might develop in the three years ahead. One person's insult is another person's homage if there's enough money attached to it.

Personally I don't consider it an insult because I don't think the names were ever meant to disrespect but to recognize the region and/or history of the region in which the school is located.

  13. How does this stadium look??

    UNDstadium.jpg

JLG consulted with UND athletics staff and University administration during the masterplanning exercise. Considering the overall campus masterplan, JLG provided the University of North Dakota Athletics with three options to centralize their athletic programs and facilities while meeting the many requirements to move to Division I Athletics. In a five year phased approach Sioux athletics could be a top tier Division I Athletic program. With these parameters and planning, UND athletics has in hand options that will help them succeed in their move to Division I Athletics.

There are more images of the stadium on the JLG website.

  14. I haven't seen this brought up in a while and I don't believe that I've ever seen an artist's rendering of it.

The proposed facility will be connected through the University of North Dakota campus, Ralph Englestad Arena and the Alerus Center by means of an overhead monorail.

I highly doubt the monorail is feasible.
