There are some pretty impressive HOME games for SDSU on there as well as some great away games. And as the fans become more familiar with the Summit, those games will just mean more and more.

We are 1 : We are united : We are together I would think this is how most people would view it. This ties into many aspects of the transition. No longer is the athletic departmet part DI and part DII, our whole department is now in 1 division. Also, it reminds our alumni and fans that we are all in this together and need to support it as a whole to make it successful. Then there is the visual cue of the DI that ties into the DI transition. And it just reminds people that we are North Dakota's team. Seems like a good marketing campaing for the first year in DI.

Can we not have a single thread without petty bickering anymore? Take it to bisonville where it fits in please.

Fighting SiouXtra Now would be the perfect time to sign up for SiouXtra. I just renewed my yearly pass for only $59.95. Signing up now will take you through the whole season and next summer. Not only will it show all home Football, M&W Basketball, M&W Hockey and Volleyball games, but also show episode of Sioux Sports Weekly and other interviews with coaches and players as well as select AWAY games! While just renewing my package I saw that they already have the women's soccer game AT Creighton on Oct 21 listed as a live event. There are also monthly and 24 hour passes available. This is another great way to support the Sioux during the transition and get to see some great games that you might otherwise miss!

Sept 5, 2009 @ Texas Tech Looks like I better save up for another road trip in 2009.

Sioux prepare for a new era A pretty good Q&A with Coach Mussman on the upcoming season and the changes that have taken place.

Did they do any advertising for this? I live in Mayville and never heard he was going to be here until I saw this thread posted.

CIS, I have to say that I have really appreciated your posts over the years that you have posted here. I know absolutely nothing about you but would like to think that after your time posting here that you have a UND sweatshirt or two in your closet and follow a few of our teams. Any plans to ever make it up here for a football, basketball or hockey game? I can guarantee that there are many posters here that would love to meet you and would show you some of our great North Dakota hospitality while you are here! If we planned it out right we could probably find a week or weekend to fit a few sports all into one trip. And hopefully in the next few years our teams are showing up at your home fields/arenas/rinks.

Great West finds common ground

Fun game. I only missed 3 on my first try. The 3 helmets that I missed: 12, 33, and 48. They are the three helmets that didn't have a logo on them. Kind of fits into all of the discussion here lately about logos, marketing, and brand recognition! I did get 33 on the second try(can't believe I missed on the first try) and 48 on about my 4th guess(only so many schools use that ugly color!). I never did figure out 12.

The campaign is "We are 1. We are North Dakota." The whole DI(1) is just a visual cue to tie in with this first season of DI.

Wow, good thread we have going here. Speaking of marketing, specifically in football. Has anyone heard if they have gotten any more done yet to make the Alerus feel more like home to Fighting Sioux football? More than anything, I would love to see them get large banners that run the length of the front of the grandstands. This would go the farthest as far as making the place look like UND's. And if UND paid to have the banners created, it would give them the opportunity to sell sponsorship on it and make some advertising money. One big hurdle about playing football at the Alerus is that it limits the options that UND has as far as making money on advertising. This is one small way that UND could try make more ad money with football.

One only has to read the press release from the Great West to see the main reasons behind setting this up. 1. Weekly and postseason honors for student athletes. 2. Scheduling. Helps fill the schedule during conference play. Centralizes the scheduling of all of the independents instead of all of the schools individually trying to work out and coordinate schedules. Gets home games without having to pay guarantees. 3. Compliance. Partnering with other schools that are just ahead of us in the transition will give great support and experience to the athletic department. The Great West is essentially being ran by the Summit which also adds a wealth of knowledge and administration with experience. 3.5 Credability. It is going to sounds better to the casual UND fan and supporter to hear that our Track and Field teams won the Great West conference tournament as opposed to saying that we won the "Independent tournament". Also... 4. Familiarity. It will create a bit of familiarity with these teams. Fans are more likely to come to a game against NJIT in baseball/volleyball, etc if they view them as a conference mate. And seeing them in all sports will create a familiarity to fans. 5. Website. The Great West will be releasing a completely redone website that will be a place for fans of all of the schools involved to more easily follow what is going on at all schools. Also gives fans of other schools a more central site to find information on the schools. 6. Numerous other intricacies of the transition to DI that I trust the administration of UND and the other schools involved understand better than us and see a value in creating this alliance under the Great West conference to help with.

I guess I don't see what you find so funny? UND has been UND since 1883 NDSU has been NDSU since, what? The 60's? If you're looking to start a smack competition please go troll bisonville.

FightingSioux.com has put up the History of the NCC video that was shown at the reception to celebrate the end of the NCC. It is a pretty neat video that really shows how dominant the NCC was in DII. It is sad to see the NCC go but hopefully someday all of the Dakota schools can become the backbone of a DI conference and are able to even remotely begin to come close to matching the traditions and succeses that were started in the NCC. Here is a link directly to the video or you can go to FightingSioux.com and click on the link in the upper righthand corner.

I think you just made the same point that others are trying to make. UND can't try to advertise what a tough home schedule they have this season. So just like NDSU did when some of their home competition wasn't the greatest, UND needs to market the idea of the entire DI transition and get people excited about it. That way they will still show up when games won't necessarily be against the greatest competition.
-
It appears that their BOR just didn't want to commit to too much without having more of their administration in place. I would think there is still a good chance we will see them involved in the Great West come 2009-10. I wonder if they will be able to get baseball and softball lined up in time for the 2008-09 season.
-
Just because our home schedules aren't completely made up of all DI schools isn't a reason you don't advertise the teams and try to get people to the games. If this move to DI is ever going to be remotely successful the administration has to get UND fans excited about the future and get them to games to support the teams. And we as Sioux fans need to realize what the transition is really about and show up for games for all of our teams and show them our support.

Actually you bring up a very valid subject. I have been an advocate of UND dropping the interlocking ND. While some schools may use the same or similar logos as other schools, it is not in the best interest of UND from a marketing standpoint to continue to use a logo that is vastly related to another school. And what this really ties into is the overall marketing of UND. First off for marketing of UND academics, I don't mind the message that the UND by the Numbers ads are trying to get across. Those are all good facts to get out about UND. However, the ads themselves are poorly done. The color scheme doesn't really tie into UND. There is the Green and White but you also have just as much blue and orange and other colors in there. Also, our primary target audience is high school kids. These kids want to hear about what the student life is like, student activities, what the campus looks like, what UND can do for them and their careers, etc. And overall there isn't really a theme or slogan to get kids to want to find out more about UND. These are good commercials if you are trying to catch the parents attention but we also need something that will catch the eye of high school kids. I have to give credit to NDSU for their "Ask me about NDSU" campaign. It showed students and student life at NDSU. And really got kids to want to findout more about NDSU. As far as marketing of athletics, the move to DI is the most opportune time to really sell UND to a whole new group of people across the nation. Over the next several years, we will be playing many, many schools for the first time. Their fans will be seeing UND teams and hearing about UND without necessarily knowing alot about the school. Showing up to their arenas wearing a logo that they know to be another schools isn't going to help UND stand out. Just because we tell people that we used a version of the logo first isn't going to make them think of it as North Dakota's logo. And the whole Sioux name controversy plays into this as well. It appears as if the writing is on the wall as to what is going to happen to the Sioux name and logo. To me, stepping into DI, having a whole new set of fans get to know us as the Sioux and then a couple of years down the road having to change the name would just set us back. We would essentially have to reintroduce our new name/logo to all of these fans. If UND is going to change the nickname, the sooner we do it in the transition the better. And looking at the University overall, there is no consistency. Academics uses the flame logo and athletics uses the interlocking ND and the Sioux logo. Even within the athletic department there is a slight split as hockey uses the Sioux logo the most prominantely while the rest of the teams seem to use the interlocking ND more prominantely. The whole Sioux issue is so sensitive that for basically the past 2+ decades, the academic side of UND has not been able to use the Sioux name/logo in any way. Most mailings that high school students get from colleges and universities show scenes on the cover with something like students out playing frisbee with the school mascot in front of the union. UND could never do that. Even look at MSU Moorheads current marketing slogan; I'm a Dragon. Not being able to have an actual mascot costume is just one less marketing tool we don't have. Being able to sent a mascot to various events around the state would be great. If you ask me, and I don't think anyone has , it is time for UND to get a name and logo that can encompass all of the university. I personally like the UND flame logo. It is a strong logo and it is simple yet recognizable. I think it would be a good one for the athletic department to begin using. And as far as the athletic department, whether they keep the Sioux name/logo or go with a new name/logo, that logo will be the primary logo of the athletic department. The UND flame logo would only be a secondary logo for athletics and used in a smaller capacity. But obviously I haven't put much thought into this or have much of an opinion.

Softball finally gets the go-ahead from NDHSSA There ya go. UND and NDSU's softball teams are safe from MPLS' chopping block.
