While you aren’t generally wrong.. I think most reasonable people are just wanting to see the backup qb get some minutes in a game. Particularly a game we have a reasonable lead in. Seems dumb and shortsighted to not want to get your backup (at any position much less an important position like qb) some game minutes outside of a kneel down. there is a different group that always wants to replace our current qb regardless of current record. I thought miller had some interesting perspective in the 360 podcast about romfos struggles passing this year versus fall camp. Related it to a short guy against fall camp pass rush versus an actual game pass rush. overall my comments in this specific thread were intended to be more complimentary of Tommy. Happy to see him at Michigan state and playing well in his opportunities.

Tommy's time starts at about 16 min mark... with 3 mins left in the 3rd quarter. Its almost like they are trying to make sure the backup QB gets some reps :).

Danny was a very good OC. He was such a big upgrade from the prior OC that its not even comparable. My only real complaint with him was that he tended to rely too much on trick plays for my liking and particularly in the last year could have been more successful by leaning into the running game. Fruechte has been very good so far, particularly with his focus on the teams offensive mindset and strength.. hopefully he continues to improve and can develop a more balanced attack. I know people dont like to give Bubba credit but the recruitment of Fruechte and Olson seem like very positive improvements to the team in a time that it could have been a disaster. Finally, if anyone really wanted Danny as a future HC candidate/Bubba replacement for UND.. a stint at a successful program like SDSU will make him more qualified rather than less qualified in my book.

General agreement with yah.. Im 100% sure that Danny didn't leave because Tommy left Im wondering though if Tommy didnt leave at least partially because Danny was suggesting there would be an open QB competition in spring ball. Backup QB for the spartans is a good gig.. backup qb for the hawks doesnt seem to be.

Biggest difference for me this year is play calling by Fruechte versus Danny and improved defense (they are related).. If we had committed to the run in the 3 games you listed above we would have won at least 2 of the 3. If I recall the timeline last year.. Tommy moved on.. then Danny moved on. I wonder if Tommy would have left if Danny had left first.. Just like I wonder who would have been the starting QB if Danny had stuck around.. Interesting to think of. Tommy running our current offensive mentality is a fun thought.

I agree with a fair amount of this comment. I have heard few people calling for Romfo to be out and out replaced.. I have heard many people questioning the lack of playing time for our backups and until we see them play we have no idea if they are any better than Romfo. I cant imagine them being worse at throwing but maybe Romfo is that much better at everything else. The fact that our backup qb has gotten one play (a kneel-down) in the first 4 games of the year is ridiculous. Personally Im super excited about UND being 3-1 at this point in the year.. this was the most optimistic record that anyone could have predicted based on all of the turnover we had.. many would have predicted 2-2 and a few negative nancys would have predicted 1-3. All of that being said.. you cant be excited about the play of the QB position. We beat Montana because they didnt load the box to stop the run (their coach admitted it) and our defense had a great 2nd half.. ISU and SD.. we should beat those teams and it shouldnt be a question.. Same with Murray State. SD had so many people in the box one pump fake and our WRs were running down the field uncovered. I would guess we will see the same defense from Murray state. I hope Romfo kills it the rest of the year.. I hope these first 4 games were a complete aberration of his actual passing ability. A decent passing game will take stress off our running game and allow it to be even more dominant. I also want to see Jerry get some playing time.

Agreed.. I think romfo completed as many throws to the other team as our team in the first half. 5/13 with 2 ints won’t get it done against a decent team. if we are sticking with romfo, I would like to see him more involved in the run game like the Montana game. Yesterday all he did was hand off the ball and make a bunch of questionable throws.. outside of two wide open completions to belquist. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the qb room when they are watching a replay of the game.

This year our “aged leader” is having a great year. Second half has been better than the first.. only real complaints I have are QB play and our willingness to kick the ball out of bounds. Neither of which are the aged leaders fault. I don’t believe that bubba selects the qb but that’s just me.

My guess is OL is a push at best.. gotta give a ton of credit to pawlak for building enough depth that we could lose 4 top notch OL and still be really good. A few years back that would have been recipe for disaster. Olson is doing awesome and let’s hope he can recruit as well as pawlak. OC is a really interesting comparison. Freuchte has been great at leaning into the strength of the team. Would be nice to see freuchte calling plays for last years offense.. and have this years defense.

I actually bet Bo is thrilled he came back for one more year. He has been a great teammate and captain

All of these other teams play multiple qbs the first few games of the year. For some reason we pick one and stick with that qb even when it was a close race in fall camp.. I’ll never understand our unwillingness to try out someone else. The current situation screams for getting the backup a little time just to see.
-
Defense will be fine this game.. offense is the much bigger concern. Complete lack of any respect by SD for our passing game. The box is loaded every down. If SD sees it so does every other team. if they are going to stick with romfo we should run the triple option or the veer. luckily our RBs are so good that they can still break it given a little daylight.
-
It was a bad throw.. should have been an easy td
-
Ended 8/10 for 97 yds and a rushing td.. pretty cool to see him do that
-
Also.. big win against a team everyone was sweating about. letdown - nope defense - awesome until we let off the gas Kickoffs - better certainly some head scratchers.. but 52-28.. I’ll take it.
-
Agree 100%.. the coaches see what we see.. if they had some much better option he would be out there. I am totally baffled why they don’t give Jerry time when we have a big lead though.. seems like you should want to develop the backups.
-
As a general note.. it is possible to both be excited about UND football and our current over performance of expectations and also be very concerned about Romfos throwing ability. The way the bengals were focusing on the rushing game an above average passer would have had 400+ yds. defense played good enough in the first half that it didn’t matter. Would have like to have seen our backup QB.. if you aren’t putting him in in the last quarter at least in this game you aren’t ever putting him in. I’m guessing that contributed to feeneey leaving also.. for some reason the backup qb doesn’t get any time even with a bit lead.
-
We won…. my guess is .. if the second half looked like the first half Jerry would have seen time in the game… but it didn’t
-
Maybe a little optimistic but certainly not joking.. If you remember the 2018 (6-5, missed the playoffs) and 2019 (7-5, lost to NS in the playoffs) teams. Kett won some games and also clearly lost some very winnable games while also flipping off the home crowd. Im optimistic that we have seen the floor with Romfo (could be wrong.. Im just a guy on the internet). I think his floor is higher than Kett's but Ketts ceiling was probably higher. This years team, and likely the 2018 and 2019 teams would have been better off with a higher floor guy and not the wide swings. I also hope we get to see some Jerry time.. just like I wish we had gotten to see more of Feeney last year. Hopefully due to us having a big lead and not injury related.
-
Pretty cool recap video that UND football posted. “If you see me in the forest fighting a grizzly help the grizzly” Pedigo. also a little clip of the strength and conditioning guy.. looks really high energy. Seems to be having a very positive impact.
-
I’ll take Romfo over Kett 10 out of 10 times.. Kett could throw a heck of a ball.. but man was he a head case. He single-handedly lost multiple games and I’ll never forget the game that he was screaming at the home crowd after a few of the faithful were booing him from the end zone.. 2019 would have been a much better year if they never gave him the starting spot back after Tommy won the Sam Houston game. anyhow.. Romfo obviously needs to improve in the throwing category. Put me in the category of those who think we have seen the floor. If he was this bad in the spring and fall camp I can’t imagine he would be starting. If he was this bad and still is starting we might want to be careful about hoping for the backup.
-
Quite a conspiracy theory there.. somebody else mentioned that one to me the other day as well. My bet is the OC picks the QB.. I would guess if it was up to the HC only or was some political thing he would have picked Feeney or Jerry to better maintain the Moorhead or Wisconsin connection versus the Calvin ND connection. all that being said.. hopefully Romfo continues to improve his throwing. It will be hard to win running only and if he can only run we will need the backup qb before the end of the year.
