Al Pearson asked me to post the following information regarding a fan bus to the Mankato series. The bus will leave REA at 8 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 18. The cost is $135/person (bus, game tickets, refreshments, driver's tip). Hotel rooms are at the Hilton, which is also the team's hotel, and is located right across the street from the rink. Chief Illiniwek asked about how the NCAA handled the Univ. of North Carolina-Pembroke. In the August 2005 press release announcing the policy, the UNC-Pembroke Braves were listed as one of "fourteen schools [that] have removed all references to Native American culture or were deemed not to have references to Native American culture as part of their athletics programs." The additional explanation regarding Pembroke was different: "everal members of the Native American community are active members of their board of trustees. Although there are no historically Native American/American Indian colleges or universities (similar to Historically Black Colleges and Universities), there is substantial evidence that UNC-Pembroke was founded as a school for Native Americans (founded as the Croatan Normal School to educate Native American teachers) and has been a part of the Native American community for 118 years.... The MOIC [Minority Opportunities & Interests Committe] noted that UNC - Pembroke has a total enrollment of 5,027, which is 21% Native American and 24% African-American. Based on their foundation, history, and continuous union with the Native American community not only as students but also as member of the board of trustees, the MOIC determined that UNC - Pembroke's use of 'Braves' was appropriate. No other institution was able to demonstrate that their use of Native American mascots, nicknames or imagery was a direct result of the self-determination of Native Americans attending and associated with their institutions." This may have been discussed before, but, if so, I didn't see it and I promised someone I would try to find out. Why is it that our hockey cheerleaders aren't on the ice?

It's about 10 hours as the bus rolls. The keg will be tapped early and often. Passengers will have brought some hard stuff with them and will usuallly share; a tray of jello shots might be passed around. Treats (bars, sub platter, cookies, snack mix, you name it) will be passed around, too. There usually isn't any soda or water unless you bring your own. There will be a couple of stops at gas stations so you can replenish your junk food stash. When we stop for lunch, sometimes we all go in to a sit-down restaurant and other times, scatter for the fast food places at the interstate plaza.

Here's my suggestion for extra volume: when the crowd stands for UNO's third down, drum on the seat in front of you. Until someone makes you stop, that would be deafening.

I like the new logo but think it can be tweaked some to address the dislikes. The "streamers" I see as indicating a current of wind. In which case, the chin should be pointed defiantly UP, head tilting back a little, bringing the streamers down into a defeated posture. Make the eye steelier, create a hint of a mouth. There! Not so soft and feminine now. Quien es muy macho?

The incorrect article is one of the "most read this hour" on the Forum site. By virtue of that status alone, the story cries out for a quick correction.

The Herald on-line blames the court for its errors: "Correction: An earlier version of this story, based on court documents, reported that Jonathan Toews would spend 10 days in jail. After subsequent interviews with prosecutors, the Herald learned Toews' sentence was suspended, so he will not serve the jail time." The Forum's on-line version still has not been corrected.

Herald's on-line story now says regarding Toews' sentence: "The 10 days will be suspended for one year, according to the plea agreement. He's been fined $425 in court fines and fees." Forum's online story has not yet been corrected.

In the autograph line, I was behind that little boy and his parents all night and at each table, the player got the same worshipful smile from the boy and at each table the player talked to the boy as if he were the only fan in the world. Heartwarming.

I got there a little after 5 and was in the front row for the very touching ceremony. I was probably there against doctor's orders [HIPAA disclosure ahead] since I'd just gotten a steroid injection in my lower back and was supposed to be taking it easy. Pretty sure "taking it easy" does not include standing on imported marble floors for 3+ hours. However, how could I ask for Ironman Chris Porter's autograph if I was too big a wuss to gut it out myself? All the guys were very friendly to the fans; Radke offered me one of the famous chocolate chip cookies which were delicious! It seemed Porter and Fabian really understood how sweet, special and fleeting their time in UND hockey was. I told Fabian he'd be missed, especially the way he'd owned the Gophers. I managed to get everyone's autograph just after the 5 minute warning. Any crowd estimates given? My own guesstimate was "a gazillion," but I might be rounding up. Thanks so much, REA and Fighting Sioux hockey team and coaches for a very special evening. I love this team!

If you're looking for UND hockey related, I always liked Panzer for a boy (particular a German Shepherd) and Zamboni ("Zam," for short) for a girl.

A great honor for a player of great honor and humility! What a blast to have been in the arena for the announcement; I was bursting with pride. Al Pearson's bus had "inside" information (a.k.a. The Band Theory) that the Hobey was Duncan's and almost all of the 80 people on our two buses were there for the ceremony along with a lot of other Sioux fans. Forecheck can verify that I texted the rumor to her just as she was preparing to leave for the arena.

At last report, Al has 6 seats remaining WITH tickets to the tournament and has reserved hotel rooms.

Every year I get paranoid that my hockey season ticket renewal form has been lost in the mail. We got a notice that they'd be sent out circa Mar. 15 but I haven't seen mine yet. Anyone gotten theirs?

Well, I would personally like to thank the Gopher fans who boorishly booed Lammy's selection as tournament goaltender because they made me want to be a better person. Instead of standing in stunned and hurt silence while the Gophers (individually and as a team) accepted their accolades, I was moved to applaud them for their accomplishments. Thanks Gopher fans for lowering the sportsmanship bar so even I could clear it!
