  1. No matter what we choose, their will be some "creative" cheers/chants from opponents fans. (ie. Sioux suck ......)
  2. Anybody read this scoring sheet? http://und.edu/university-public-affairs/_files/docs/nickname/screening-filters.pdf #7 really sticks out to me. I think some of the best names out their are the "unique" ones that people don't initially understand but in learning the name, end up learning something about the school/region/area/ people/etc. I think Tarheels, Hoosiers, and Sooners are great names vs. hawks, eagles, etc.
  3. It is unique to NCAA athletics. UND does not play any high schools in the region. Nor do they play in the CFL. I would guess that can be said for just about every possible nickname,,,other than possibly Nodaks.
  4. Um, change the the letter 'a' in Nodaks to an 'I' and there are some potential issues/negative chants that can occur.
  5. The only thing I would've added is that Teddy hunted bison and Grizzly Bears. :-)
  6. Do you think Minnesota fans would let us forget we stole their motto? It's on their state flag! Pretty sure the UM would take every chance to remind us and others that UND took their nickname from their state...
  7. Well, the consultants said any name could have a double meaning. I guess the only way to avoid that is have no nickname. My guess is they'd rather take a chance on a name instead of recommend no nickname.
  8. Heres the latest article as I don't believe it's been pasted. The consultants at least acknowledged any name can have a double meaning, but apparently Roughriders is "a little different" and "crosses a line."
  9. Very true, so I have I. Stopped drinking soda also. Anytime a new restaurant comes to town, I need to give it a try or two though.
  10. Was it brought up during their meeting today? If their aware, how does it tie for second most votes?
  11. For example, I was in drive thru at the window waiting for nearly fifteen minutes. Ten of which my order was sitting in clear view, all ready to go, but staff were to busy visiting with each other.
  12. Many of the ones brought into GF often end up in EGF because they now the system pays better in Mimnesota.
  13. Does anyone have email addresses for committee members. Someone, maybe several people, need to inform them that Minnesota is the North Star state. It's in their motto and on their state flag. L'Etoile du nord: Star of the North Minnesota formally adopted the French phrase "L'Etoile du nord" (The Star of the north) as the official state motto in 1861. The motto appears on Minnesota's state seal. http://www.statesymbolsusa.org/symbol-official-item/minnesota/state-flag/flag-minnesota
  14. Yup...don't like it. Basically says we weren't smart enough to think of anything else so let's just shorten the state name.
  15. How do these consultants not see a potential "dirty" connection with Nodaks??? Pretty easy to switch an 'a' to an 'I' and have a "dirty" connection.
  16. So are they planning on narrowing down the list tat this meeting?
  17. So has anyone suggested that "Spirit" has potential negative connotations because it might encourage UND students to drink "spirits?"
  18. Seriously? If this is the case and Roughriders doesn't at least make the final three, then would have to think the fix is in. Worst case scenario, UND Spirit... :-(
  19. I tried this place a couple times. I don't know who managed the store but service was horrible.
  20. Asks the guy who voted for Fighting Hawks... :-/
  21. Another interesting side note... Definition of Roughriders: n. noun 1. A skilled rider of little-trained horses, especially one who breaks horses for riding. 2. A member of the First US Volunteer Cavalry regiment under Theodore Roosevelt in the Spanish-American War. The first definition has little to do with Teddy. Given the Native Americans history with the Cavalry. I can't believe it's still under consideration...it is my second choice however.
  22. I'm not against North Stars because of the Minnesota North Stars hockey team. I'm against it because Minnesota is the North Star state, it's on their flag and in their state motto. Also, I don't think it is very marketable...what type of a mascot would we have?
  23. Yep....http://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-huntbuffaloroosevelt.html And Grizzlies... http://www.theodore-roosevelt.com/images/research/speeches/trgrizzly.pdf Probably shot a gopher or two in his day as well. :-)
  24. Indiana-The Hoosier State-The University of Indiana Hoosiers Iowa-The Hawkeye State-The University of Iowa Hawkeyes Michigan-The Wolverine State-The University of Michigan Wolverines Nebraska-The Cornhusker State-The University of Nebraska Cornhuskers North Carolina-The Tarheel State-The University of North Carolina Tarheels Ohio-The Buckeye State-The Ohio State Buckeye's Oklahoma-The Sooner State-The University of Oklahoma Sooners Oregon-The Beaver State-The University of Oregon State Beavers Tennesse-The Volunteer State-The University of Tennessee Volunteers Wisconsin-The Badger State-The University of Wisconsin Badgers Wyoming-The Cowboy State-The University of Wyoming Cowboys I didn't include all of the unofficial nicknames such as Minnesota being the North Star State, Gopher State, or South Dakota being the Coyote State, but here's a good list. Many state nicknames are the same as their university nicknames: http://www.netstate.com/states/tables/st_nicks.htm North Dakota official and unofficial nicknames: Peace Garden State-Peaceniks?-no thanks Sioux State- Tried and was taken away from us. Flickertail State-Former nickname, no longer popular with the majority. Roughrider State- Sign me up And has been stated before... http://governor.nd.gov/theodore-roosevelt-rough-rider-award
  25. I understand, which is why I also listed an article from someone associated with the U of I explaining why it's important to pick a mascot. Illini obviously came from the native american tribe. If there were no tribe named Illini, would Illinois have used the Illini as their nickname? My guess would be no. No need to further argue this point as we are both somewhat on the same page. Nodaks would be about 4th or 5th on my list. Roughriders, Cavalry, No name, Nodaks/Explorers.
