  1. Which conference to you believe is better, the Mid Con-Gateway or the Big Sky? The Big Sky has all sports including football. Where as in the Mid Con, football would be in a different conference. The Big Sky has Montana and Montana State but one or both of them might go D1-A. The Mid Con and Gateway (probable) have long time rivals NDSU and SDSU. The Mid Con-Gateway also has easier tavel.

Edit: Please explain your choice. Thanks

A conference is a conference...I just hope we get into one sooner rather than later. I did vote for Midcon for a couple of reasons. First off I tend to prefer the Midcon due to it's being in the same time zone as UND. I would also like to see us in the same conference's as the SU's as well. There are several positives about the BSC as well.

  2. Is anybody planning on heading to Madison this year? It's their homecoming, and it's looking bleak for hotel rooms. I'm 0-for-the-afternoon in booking a room.

We booked a couple of weeks ago...have connections in the hotel industry, actually got regular price at the Doubletree :D However, we don't have hockey tix yet :D

  3. I believe that comes from a Big 10 policy, but it allows exceptions for conference opponents, etc. I am not sure if the CCHA or any other hockey conference has such a stupid rule. Moreover, I really doubt Michigan would turn down the $$$ to not play Florida State in the Fiesta Bowl or Rose Bowl.

This link talks about schools from the NCC and WCHA who have passed resolutions pertaining to Native American mascots. You can scroll down to the U of Wisconsin to see the resolution, or summary of it.

    http://www.UND.nodak.edu/org/bridges/passed.html

It seems as though UND and Illinois get a pass due to being in the same conference

  4. If the symbol was one that was associated with any other type of "tribe", I wonder if the NCAA would have a problem with it? ???

Can anyone here tell me if North Dakota has ever had an opponent refuse to play them because of the nickname/symbolism? I can tell you that a few people have made some noise about the Illini (some people associated with the University of Oregon) but AFAIK no game has ever been cancelled, or even not scheduled.

I could be wrong but I believe the Michigan Wolverines are a school that will not play opponents with Native American mascot/nicknames...not sure if I heard it or read it. The only time I remember the Sioux playing them has been in tournaments (in the last 10 or so years).

On a related note, they do continue to play Notre Dame on an annual basis.

  5. Not getting much love from Lindy's........Sioux rated 16th in the preseason poll.

Maybe they confused ND with SD since they are basically flip-flopped in the poles

  6. I seem to recall, but cannot find it in any UND press release, that when the new American Indian Center was dedicated, that it was described as a temporary step and that there was a much larger plan to build a Native American Center/museum in the works.

I remember something about a larger center but did not know that it may possibly house a museum...anyone else with info on that?

  7. Certainly this will be seen as "buying off" the tribes, but who cares? If UND could take a step forward in a mutually beneficial way I think it's worth it. There's a trophy area for Sioux hockey, maybe there's room for the exhibits that you suggest as well, Sioux-cia.

I guess I would view it as "Something good coming from the continued use of the Sioux name" as the Spirit Lake resolution states.

  8. It's nice to see some think this is a good idea. I was actually going to send an email to the "powers that be" on both sides of the issue. Does anyone know if this has ever been brought up before? If this would ever happen I would guess that UND would work with Tribal elders to see how the Sioux history would be best integrated.

  9. I have a question. We all know how nice of a hockey venue the Engelstad Arena is. People from all around the region, country, and world have come and continue to visit the arena and walk away impressed. The arena has many features, one of my favorite is the pictures that basically depict the history of Sioux hockey.

My question is this: Has there ever been discussion about incorporating Native American History (specifically Sioux) into the arena? Whether it be special Sioux history type of room, or interspersed amongst the hockey memorabilia, or even museum built next to the arena. I believe there is a great opportunity for something positive to come from this nickname debate. Now that the debate has taken on a national platform, is it possible for something positive like this to occur.

Any other ideas, suggestions about this?

  10. I suppose the Democrat candidate is in a bit of a sticky situation in that the vast majority of the people in the state support the nickname, but a sizeable number of activists in his own party are staunchly against it. He's trying to a walk a middle-road by saying he supports the nickname, but doesn't support the lawsuit by the A.G. It's kind of like ND's congressional delegation who say, when asked, that they support the name, but don't do anything to show it. Stenehjem seems to be only politician in North Dakota with a spine on this issue.

I'll predict that the issue of the A.G. bringing the lawsuit ends up in court before the actual litigation with the NCAA. The activists will stop at nothing to put up as many roadblocks as possible.

Did anyone see Stenhjeim on TV last night. He was quoted as stating that Mr. Brudvik may not know th laws concerning the AG office. Since the SBoHE voted in favor of the lawsuit, The AG's office has to be the one's to try it since the board is an official office of the State of North Dakota. Not sure if I got that 100% correct, but Mr. Stenhjeim made it sound as though it's state law that the AG be invovled.

  11. If Kupchella is going to come out today and say "we're going Division I", then it makes no sense to delay because apparently the university is moving regardless of what is discovered in the "exploratory exploratory" year!

And if you're going to try to tell me that the UND leadership is working with some super secret information that led to this decision to wait a year, I'm not buying it.

Like IowaBison said, all this is doing is extending the transition phase by an extra year.

What's kind of funny/ironic about this debate is that most of the Bison Fans over on Bville think it's a good idea for UND to wait the extra year to have the exploratory year. They state they did it not only to find a partner but out of respect for the NCC and the current players/coaches.

  12. Sorry to have to report this, but a good friend to many of us and a great friend to Fighting Sioux Athletics, Jeff Anderson, died yesterday. "Jeff-Jeff" as he was known to most, worked for a long time at the Old Ralph and was very close to many of the coaches, players, and fans of UND. A true character. He will be missed.

I had the privilage of knowing Jeff as well...he will be missed.

  13. Not really. Buning never said anything about conference affiliation. The last paragraph is a fallacy. Dr. Boyd said that UND realizes they won't be asked to join a conference until they state their intentions. This AP report lacks several of the key items I've already mentioned.

Thanks for your input as well since you were at the meeting...I can't believe the Heraldo would print something that isn't completely accurate ;)

  14. For those of us who agree with this comment, make sure you are communicating with Kupchella. It doesn't do any good for us to just vent about it here!

If you are one who are able and willing to start donating or to donate more than you have in the past, Kupchella really needs to hear that.

I also agree with this. I have and always will be a Sioux fan no matter what division their in...although I prefer they go DI. My little nephew who was born a few months ago obviously has no allegiances. The next 10-15 years as he grows up which way do I think he'll lean? I hate to say it but he may very well choose DI NDSU over DII UND (except for hockey of course). I also unfortunately believe this would become the norm for the "newer" generation kids.
