Wish I was there with you! Ah....golf! Sioux should sweep, but Sandy's teams never go down easy for us. They tend to play us tough. Let's hope they take a few nights off!

I've heard these types of comments quite a few times during Islanders games this year as well. It appears Blaker has carried over what he did with the Sioux to the NHL, and that is annoying the heck out of opposing players I really felt Team USA needed younger players like Blake, Gionta, Leopold. It's a rough tournament on a large sheet of ice, and one wonders if the older guys are going to have as much legs as the younger guys. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with team selection for the US squad. It also doesn't help that now that the NHL plays, olympic teams get very little practice as a squad before the games begin. As the coach of Team USA said, "At the beginning, you have to play good. To win the tournament, you have to play great." He also commented that the team that pulls together the quickest will have the most success.

Former Sioux Jason Blake did register the first penalty of today's USA/Latvia game, taking a holding penalty. I didn't get to see the game live, so I'm not sure how much playing time Blake registered, or how he played overall. Team USA has to consider this game as a loss, which is probably due to the one practice yesterday, which lasted an entire hour! As far as USA hockey goes, our best bet for gold (or any medal for that matter) is the Women's team, who will need to get by Sweden and presumably Canada.

I should have known that you'd know how to put them to sleep. I have this image of you and SoDak Sioux Fan doing this while you were in high school. -

I just put Sioux/Gophers 1998 "The Great Comeback" on DVD, and I'm watching it, and I got to the point where someone threw a live gopher on the ice. I was wondering if anyone on the board knows who threw that, or how they contained it until the 3rd period of the game. Something I've always wondered about this game. Just thought somebody may know the answer to my question. -
Jason Blake scored his 21st goal of the season and his 200th NHL point in today's Islander/Devils game. He's definitely defied the odds with his career in the NHL. Congrats Blaker.

I would definitely have to agree with you on that. We could only wish to get a bracket like this one states!

My brother and I refer to this game as "The Great Comeback". Woog refered to the "Panzer-Panzer-Panzer" line, and the announcer informed him that there were only two Panzer's, which frazzled Woog even more! I have this game on tape. Let me know if you want a copy Siouxnami. I've been meaning to put it on DVD. PM me if you're interested. I'd only make you pay for cost to make it and shipping. -
I agree that money is a big part of it, but I think even more, it's the player's desire to play at the next level. If a team who holds your rights wants you to make the jump to the next level, they must feel you're ready, and want you to start preparing for the NHL. I don't know if I agree that money is as big of a deal as what is being stated here. Granted, these are young men getting some hefty offers from teams, but I believe that these players want to make the right choice overall. Look at ZPar. I hated it that he left after two years, especially after the early exit from the NCAA tournament that the Sioux had that year. However, in reality, what else could he have accomplished at the college level. He could have come back, and most likely won the Hobey, and had another chance at a national championship, but as far as honing his skills, I thought he did that. With that being said, Zach was pretty upset that he passed up his two years of college eligibility and never had the chance to play for the Devils that spring. I think he was under the impression that he would have that chance. Overall, I think it depends on the players. The large majority of our players (if not all of them), come to UND to help them get to the next level. They also obtain a quality education while doing so. I believe it was Commodore's mom who wanted him to stay in school for his junior year and probably his senior year to obtain a degree, yet probably realized that he needed to make the move that he did to the pros when he did. However, a player like Travis Roche was definitely not a scholar, and came to UND as a step to the next level. I doubt Travis ever thought he'd be at UND for all 4 years.

I forgot my funniest Sioux moment...1996-Nick Naumenko comes and the Sioux come out for warm-ups. The fans stand up and cheer. Naumenko is the first person to shoot a puck in warm-ups. Ends up hitting the crossbar of the goal, shoots off at a 90 degree angle into the end of the student section, hitting a fan in the chest. The fan was talking to his buddies and never saw it coming. It knocked him right in his seat. HILARIOUS! For whatever reason, I watched that puck the entire way from the moment it left Naumenko's stick and hit the poor guy. The guy wasn't hurt, laughed it off, and had a warm-up puck, but it did give me (and probably that guy) something to remember for the rest of our lives. I honestly don't think the guy knows to this day, who shot that puck, but buddy, if you're a fan on SS.com, you have Nick Naumenko to thank for that shot. -

Not at home, so I can't put in the DVD, but I'm pretty sure it was Pivetz. Could be wrong, but I've watched this game quite a few times. -
It happened up until 2001 when they opened the new Ralph. I don't recall seeing one hit the new ice surface. I know I toyed with the idea a few years ago, but didn't want to be ejected from a Sioux/Gopher game. In hindsight, I should have done it. My brother and I went gopher hunting, and I had them if I wanted them. I opted not to do it. Wish I would've done it!

favorite goal scorer...David Hoogsteen. A little guy who defied the odds and made an impact. Loved both his goals in the '97 championship game, and his celebration after them too. favorite tough guy...Mike Commodore. Bad a$$ on the ice. Heck of a nice guy off the ice. favorite set up guy...Zach Parise-loved watching him play for two years as a Sioux player. Still love to watch him play. Brings energy to the ice every shift. favorite check...Mark Pivetz in the '97 championship game where he upended the BU player behind the net. Heck of a hit. favorite goalie...Karl Goehring-kept it simple and made some GREAT saves favorite team...'96-'97 team. "Speed Kills" A team that wasn't expected to be there at the end, but put that aside and gelled as a team. favorite sioux game ever attended..Sioux/Gophers - Feb 2, 1996...my first Sioux/Gopher experience. Stood outside for 2 hours in -22 degree weather. Let my car run for over 5 hours, as it wouldn't have started if I didn't! Gophers ranked #1, unbeaten in 19 games. Sioux shell them 8-2. Never heard as loud as a building as that night. Unbelievable hockey environment. -

That's the game I caught my game puck! Heck of a night! BC player shot was deflected by Sioux defenseman, which came right to me. Everyone else in the section moved out of the way. I played goalie! The next year, they put up that stupid netting! -
IMO, a lot of the games Karl played in his senior year, he demonstrated actions that were uncharacteristic of what we had seen from him in prior years (with two specific actions coming in the title game that year). Another big part of a goalies success is the team playing in front of him, and Karl definitely had some supporting cast members in his career at UND. Yes, goalies still need to make the saves, but how many shots never made it to him, because of who was in front of him? How many plays were broken because of the talent and speed of his teammates? Jordan has definitely earned his statistics, using a style that you don't see often in goalies. It isn't the nicest thing to watch, as sometimes he's all over his crease, and looks like he's flopping, but he gets the job done for the most part, and the end result is what is most important in every single game he plays in. Only allowing 2 goals in a 2 one game isn't a win, and wins are what the teams need. I agree that you can't blame either Jordan or Phil for their play this year. They've actually kept us in more games than what we probably deserved to be in, and they've both been hung out to dry at times this year. Either goalie can get the job done. Now we just need the players in front of that goalie to show up every minute of every game.

I do firmly believe everyone should be allowed to voice their opinion on a public message board, and that they should not be verbally abused for their opinions. However, in your case, you're a gopher fan who has ventured to an opposing team's message board to, to a certain extent, antagonize the members, with your comments. I don't believe that justifies anyone verbally attacking, and don't agree with it happening to you anymore than anyone else on this site, but, you're a gopher fan......and.....that's all I have to say.

I hate those darn holing calls! Can't the field crew get rid of the holes!!!

I'm sure the entire coaching staff and probably the players are wondering why they play better in front of Jordan. It's one of the unknowns, and I'm sure all fans wish they'd get it figured out. I'd like to see Phil have a shot at being the go-to goaltender during the playoff run, and I wasn't too excited that he didn't have the opportunity to play one game against CC, but it's not my choice. It's Hak's choice as he heads this team. I'm just a fan, and have to put up with the choices made by them, and the way the team plays. You're not the only person who has attacked people on this board. I know numerous people who do it, and I'm sure at one time or another, I probably did it due to a heated debate. However, the best thing to do is to be the adult. If you don't fuel the fire, it's bound to go out. I joined the board to communicate with other Sioux fans, and I love it. It's a way for people to talk Sioux hockey, regardless of where they live. What I can't understand is why so many people feel pleasure in demoralizing, or at least attempting to demoralize other Sioux fans.

I've noticed in your mere 6 or 7 posts that you're quick to attack people on this board. Some of the people you attack have been posting here for years now. This is a public forum, so everyone is entitled to their own opinions. Your opinion will obviously different from others, but that doesn't mean that you should attack someone until they see things your way. That's an adolescent mentality. In regards to your argument, you also need to look at who the players are playing better in front of, and looking at the stats (Wins/Losses which is important), Jordan has had better luck than Phil. Phil has definitely proven that he deserves to play at least one game a weekend, but Jordan has done that as well. Ease up on the attacks buddy. This is a public forum and all opinions should be welcome, and remember, everytime you point your finger at someone, there are three fingers pointing at you.

I agree. Defensive players due tend to take a little longer to develop than forwards. I don't recall Naumenko, Murphy, or Williamson contributing tons until sophomore, junior and senior year. Roche was an exception who jumped in right away, but had a little more experience, and had to sit out some time before he could play. IMO, it's a lot more difficult for younger players to learn the defensive role rather than offensive. It may have something to do with Hak and Berry's playing style, but I highly doubt it. The most productive offensive defenseman in the league tend to have experience under their belt, which is something the majority of our corp is trying to get. Unfortunately, our guys most likely won't contribute much more than they have already this year, but let's hope for the best.
