  1. From a MSU perspective, the resurgence has coincided with the schedule easing up. It hasn't just been the level of competition (albeit that is some of it). This team's injuries were rivaling what UND has been going through. At one point, MSU had to take a 3rd goalie on the road just to have a full roster. One of our senior forwards (Schiller) has played more than half the year as a defenseman and had started 3 freshmen defenders most of the year. In an early game against UMD, the injuries to the defense deplete the team so much that Palmquist (a freshman) played 35 and 38 shifts over the course of the weekend. Add to that losing our top scorer from last year and it meant having to grow a ton while on the ice.

The level of play has improved a ton since then. This by no means is a plea to anyone to think this is a top 3 team in the conference, but to characterize the resurgence simply as playing lesser teams just isn't true.

I think what you've posted here gives context as to why UND's run this season is so impressive to me (and likely most Sioux fans). They've actually played better the thinner the lineup has become!

  2. Glad you pointed out that most of MSU's recent success was against the bottom six in the league. Still, though, UND can't take anything for granted and they know this. If you'd have told me three months ago that this team would have a chance to get in the tourney on their own merit and not need help I'd have thought you were nuts. I'm expecting a sweep, but would be only mildly disappointed with less than that all things considered this year.

  3. Sorry if this has been posted, but here is The Hockey News take: http://www.thehockey...e-ramps-up.html

Does he have his facts straight?

Of course it’s the players who lose out here. The men’s team has “neutral-themed” jerseys on order in case the squad makes it to the Frozen Four – and with 15 NHL draft picks on the roster, including first-rounders Brock Nelson and Derek Forbort, that’s not a stretch – but state law would prevent them from wearing the alternative sweaters. What, exactly, is the university’s sports department supposed to do?

It's my understanding that the law doesn't force the logo on the uniforms, so they would be able to compete and avoid forfeiture at the NCAA level with "generic" unis.

  4. Do we know for sure all the home games will still be available over FTA? I suppose if WDAZ is still producing them for local broadcasting that means the feed would be there, but if UNDSN no longer exists, then will the game actually get uplinked to the satellite for us to pick up?

No...we don't know for sure...keyword "may" only be available. ;) Lots of time before this is an issue, though, so hopefully something gets worked out.

  5. I am considering getting a FTA at the hunting shack. Is there much on those anymore?

I only use mine for FSSN broadcasts so I don't really know. From what I've seen you can get some occasional sports and a lot of news feeds, but I'm not sure I would rely on it as my sole source of TV entertainment. Of course...if you only need it for Sioux games during hunting season you'd be set - especially considering they may only be available nationally on FTA due to the upcoming TV deal with the NCHC. It's a good thing we have a year and a half to get this figured out!

  6. But either way you're still against keeping the name, which is why there was no need for another different choice in the poll. It's a simple yes or no question, no need to elaborate on why you're saying no. For one reason or the other, either way it is equally insulting to our Native American friends who are fighting so hard to preserve their proud name.

Fail. They didn't frame it as a Yes or No question. The Yes answer included the qualifier "The nickname and Logo are Offensive." Therefore, if I don't believe the nickname to be offensive, but I still feel it should be changed because the University is between a rock and a hard place, I don't have a place to cast my vote. The third option "I don't care" is also not available to me because I do care.

  7. The UND-DU game drew 86,000 viewers compared to 74,000 viewers for the Michigan-Notre Dame game. The BU-VT game that preceded the UND-DU game only drew 38,000 viewers.

January 6 - Dartmouth vs. RPI, 38,000 viewers

January 20 - Michigan vs. Notre Dame, 74,000 viewers

    January 27 - Yale vs. Harvard, 82,000

February 3 - Cornell vs. RPI, 64,000 viewers

Febuary 10 - Boston College vs. Vermont, n/a*

    February 10 - Minnesota vs. Denver, n/a*

    February 17 - Dartmouth vs. Yale, n/a*

February 24 - Boston University vs. Vermont, 38,000 viewers

February 24 - North Dakota vs. Denver, 86,000 viewers

*I haven't been able to find ratings for the Feb. 10 or Feb. 17 games. It would be interesting to see how UND-DU compared to MN-DU and BC-VT.

An average of 62,000 viewers were tuned into NBC Sports Network at any given time last month.

    Very nice! Thanks for that!

  8. Minnesota will play the night game on Friday. I don't think anybody would argue that. If they are the #1 seed and the 3/6 game is played on Thursday afternoon, that would force the winner of the 4/5 game to turn around and play Friday afternoon after a Thursday night game. In this situation, wouldn't they flip those Thursday games?

I'm assuming you meant to say "if they AREN'T the #1 seed..."

The winner of the 3v6 game plays the 2. The winner of the 4v5 plays the 1. The 1 gets the night game unless MN finishes 2. In the previous 5-team format, the WCHA has forced the Thursday night 4/5 winner to turn around and play Friday afternoon several times, so there is precedent for this. In 2004 we were the #1 and got to play the 4/5 winner (UAA) Friday afternoon because the Gophers were the 3. Same with 2001. The point you make is still valid, though, because under the current format there is an option to give the 4/5 game winner more rest with an earlier game that did not exist under the previous format. I can't say for sure what the league would do.

So if the top 4 seeds hold serve from here on out and UND is #4, they probably play the late game Thursday is what you are saying?

    Essentially, yes...

  9. Hypothetical question...if UND plays on Thursday in the F5, anyone know how the WCHA determines what time slot teams play in?

Last year they played the 3 v 6 quarterfinal in the early slot. It makes sense to give the 3 seed the early slot so as to give them the longest possible rest between games. If MN stays in first, it would probably stay that way, but should they drop to 2 and the MN rule is in effect, who knows?

Edit: After thinking about it for a second, the MN rule shouldn't matter because the early QF slot gives the 3 seed maximum rest regardless of the situation.

  10. I think the same thing will happen as happened against minny and duluth. we blew our wad last night and will lay an egg tonight. i'm tickled we won last night and anything positive tonight is a bonus.

I'll take the team that played Saturday in Duluth minus the idiotic flurry of penalties. They dominated 5-on-5 that night.

  11. As somebody who attended games on a relatively regular basis during those years, I think you are allowing your dislike of the other side to get in the way of reality. I'll need to take a shower after this post since I am agreeing with a couple of Goof fans but they are much more accurate on the attendance than you seem willing to admit. Of course, a few of the series were well attended but the percentage of seats filled in those days was not very good.

Not when I attended games which was just about every weekend...The place was usually half full in the 90's until 97. Even Gopher games usually didn't completely sell out IIRC. I believe even Goon admitted a couple months ago that the attendance in that time was very low.

Yep. I remember the early 90s...not too tough to walk up to the door and probably get a FREE ticket from someone giving them away for most series. Those last few years of Gino's tenure could certainly be classified as a down period. Once Blais took the reigns it ramped up from there.

  12. The fifth point you made is something that needs to be addressed. It's a shame that a 10,000+ arena with the following the Sioux have can't find ways to stay in the game. It's easy to be a great crowd when things are going good on the ice, but on Saturday you could hear most of the players' chatter on the ice from my TV perspective, and every crowd shot during the game showed what appeared to be uninterested fans. Those who are able to attend the games need to help out on their end a bit to give the team a little more home-ice advantage.

I think it was the opponent, to be honest. Let's face it...we haven't exactly had barn-burners with MTU the past however many years. For the fans, there just isn't any intensity to a match-up between these two teams because the outcome has been one-sided for so long.

  13. yeah I got a game earlier this year and I'm just hoping im pointed at the right bird now with my 87 west setting.

But I see the a FSSN entry in my channel history but it was at 12095 V4870 not V4880?

I think you'll be OK. Mine was slightly different, too.
