  1. Everyone seems to forget, or did not know, that attendence at the tourney in St. Paul was not very big in the early 90's. UND fans only travel in numbers if the destination is easy for them to get to and cheap.

The St. Paul Civic Center seated about 16,000. The tourney drew 45k - 55k when in St. Paul before the X was built. In 1994 they set a record attendance of about 61,000 (broken 1st year at X). I'd say the tourney did pretty well in the early 90s. Not sure what this has to do with UND fans and their travel habits. IMO the biggest reason for the tourney attendance explosion is the building of the X.

  2. This is true, how about Omaha and St. Paul? I would say Grand Forks but Omaha's arena holds more people and it's a better destination city.

I like the idea of a St. Paul/Omaha rotation vs. St. Paul/Denver if necessary. Omaha is a great road trip with a convenient downtown location for their arena. I haven't been to Denver yet, but will be knocking that one off the list in a couple weeks, althought the experience will be different going to Magness than it would be going to Pepsi. Ok...maybe I just want to drive to the tourney every year instead of fly!

  3. No, dagies, it's even simpler than any of that -- it's the law. They have to. University lawyers interpret the law to say that once the petitions are filed and certified, "the repeal" is on hold, thus, the law on the books before the repeal would go into effect until the June vote decides the matter. Dumb, I know, but that's how they're interpreting the law.

Well...in order to put a hold on the hold I guess it's time to start the petition to repeal the repeal of the repeal!

  4. This is the tie-breaking procedure for tournament seeding the WCHA listed on their site last year. I can't imagine it being different this year. As for the MacNaughton, teams who tie for first are co-champions.

    -------

In the event that ties are encountered in the determination of WCHA ranking or designation of home teams for playoff purposes, the following procedures will be used in the order given to break the ties:

    a) If two or more teams are tied, head-to-head competition during the regular (conference) season will be used to break the tie.

    b) If two or more teams are still tied after (a), the highest seed will go to the team with the most WCHA (conference) wins during the regular season.

    c) If two or more teams played a four-game series during the regular season and the teams have the same win-loss records for those series and the same number of WCHA wins, the team having the least number of goals scored against it in the four-game series shall have the higher rank. If two or more teams played a two-game series during the regular season, procede to tie-breaker d).

    d) If two or more teams are still tied after applying the provisions of (a), (b) and ©, the team having the greatest ‘winning margin’ during the regular season will have the higher rank. Winning margin = WCHA goals for during the regular season minus WCHA goals against.

    e) Games played against WCHA opponents in holiday tournaments will not be counted in the determinations.

  5. It would be interesting if, say, DU has games on their "regional" FSN-RM...which I can pick up on my direcTV sports package. Would they now be blacked out? Purely hypothetical, but what if UND were to get a "regional" deal on the "regional" FSN-North? Or...what if the UNDSN were to become available to DirecTV subscribers and thus available to everyone via the sports package?

  6. Hmm that's funny. The Pairwise would say otherwise on our rating. Sweep of Western in their barn, 3 at providence, 3 at DU, split with Notre Dame. Good stuff. If I squint real hard I may be able to see UND in the pairwise rankings somewhere "Mr Stoney-no name". I'll give you a play by play of the NCAA's while you and your no names enjoy thr golf course. Do me a favor, warm up the Tee box for me, I'll be out April 8th

It's funny how a single postseason can change the outlook of a fanbase.

If there's one thing both UND and UMD fans should have learned from last year, it's that what a team does in the games leading up to the posteason really doesn't matter a whole hell of a lot.

UMD could be on our end of the spectrum this year and we could surprise everyone.

Just make the tourney and take care of business!

  7. we can only afford 2 losses and we have UMD next week?!? yikes

Normally I'd be less concerned knowing Tech scored 9 unanswered goals on UMD to close the weekend...but that's a double-edged sword considering we have to host MTU the following weekend!

  8. This hockey season more than ever has reaffirmed the case that a hockey team needs four lines to be successful. On the live blog on Saturday night I believe the UND SID said that the fourth line wings (no center, not enough bodies) had only seen one shift the entire third period.....

I think someone said it earlier....absolutely need to slow the pace down. Race horse hockey can't happen for long stretches. Heck yes its fun to watch, but you saw at the end of the SCSU Saturday night game.....one gassed hockey team....lucky to get out with two points.

How does one slow the pace down when there's another team out there? Physical play? Which takes more of a toll on the body - speed or checking?

I think having the extra ~3000 sq. ft. of the olympic surface to cover last weekend didn't do us any favors as well. It will probably be a little tighter and hopefully easier on our thin lineup this weekend on an NHL sheet.

  9. I find it ridiculous that Oxford is even in the top 40. Shouldn't Merrimack be in there then? Pretty sure they average the same amount of fans :silly: What a joke. I still think Minneaplis-St. Paul should be ahead of Detroit and competing with Boston. Definitely cant argue about Montreal and Toronto, though. Those are the top two in my opinion.

And they don't even mention the MN State Hockey Tourney...

  10. You assume McLeod won't chime in on Monday or Tuesday.

PS - Whatever happened to the "if you can go from the bench to the locker room without stepping onto the ice that's what you do" rule? Minnesota was coming onto the ice after each period. That used to be first a warning then a bench minor.

McLeod would actually wait until Thursday.

Denver does the same crap after each period, too, and nothing is done about it.

  11. I'm pretty sure FSN brings their own cameras and equipment for this series. I seem to remember quite a few more cameras in the arena when the gophers were in town.

Yes, it's obvious FSN brings their own equipment because they broadcast from a much higher angle - probably in/near the press box. FSSN has their cameras on the concourse level.

  12. Yes, but they didn't announce they were shutting him down until Nov. 18. I'd assume he was trying to practice between the Sat. Gopher game and the 18th. I guess I'm still holding out hope he's still "on schedule" to return, but at the same time I'm not holding my breath. I would have thought we would have heard something around week 6 or so if they though it was a legitimate 6 to 8 week deal...such as an attempt to practice, etc.

  13. That's exactly how I see it as well. Mario, Knight and Forbort will give-it-a-go at less than 100%.

Rocco has been bowling as much or more than he has been skating from reports. No way I see him playing this weekend...or next next weekend vs. SCSU...or... When one opts not to have surgery on a knee injury and after 10 weeks of rehab that has not got you back on the ice regularly skating, that is not positive for the rest of the season IMO.

This weekend will be week 8 since they announced they were shutting him down for "6-8 weeks" on Nov. 18. According to his comments at that time, he said he wouldn't start practicing until the 6-8 weeks were up. I'm not holding my breath that he'll return this season, but it would seem to me that this next week will be decision time regarding surgery.

  14. Yes, but you now have time to recruit to fill that position. I would say that he should come in as a walk-on and prove himself like Gaarder to receive scholarship money. If they didn't think the chemistry between the brothers was worth taking the plunge before, why now, if indeed it comes to fruition. If he can't find playing time at St. Cloud, what does that say about our lineup. Maybe there were other issues at St. Cloud where he didn't want to stay, but I would think there are plenty of other recruits to draw on now. If he could play right away, then I can see the J.T. Miller angle, but he wouldn't be able to play until after Christmas next year. Hakstol didn't bring in someone after Christmas this year because I'm sure no one was available that could be a difference maker. If he will fight for playing time here, I have no problem because depth is always a good thing, but I also think the Sioux will have a lot of depth next year and could add some more skill with the scholarship money they have that went unused with departures like Cichy and Bruneteau and the Miller fiasco.

Yeah, I'm not sure how it all shakes out or what the potential scenarios could be. With all the highly sought after kids committing early these days, it may have been difficult to bring in a "difference maker" for the 2012 class so late in the game after Miller bolted. I guess we'll have to see what happens over the next few weeks...kid could end up somewhere else.

  15. What has changed since they didn't recruit him the first time around? He was frustrated with playing time at St. Cloud, but didn't want to stay and work his way into playing time. I think Motzko is a pretty fair coach and wants to win, so I would have to assume that he thought other players gave them a better chance to win. I would hope and assume that if he did come here, he would be a walk-on, because like I said, if they think the line combo would be good, why didn't they recruit them together the first time around.

What changed? For starters, J.T. Miller never showed up on campus. McMillan was already committed to SCSU, so we had to go the walk-on route to fill Miller's spot in the class.

  16. Funny but the media does not call it the Tea Party because the are not an offical political party. They are known more as the teabaggers than the Tea Party. The only place the are called the Tea Party, which is not correct, is FauxNews and other rightwingnut sites.

Funny how you chastise everyone here for the term "PN," but you have no problem slinging the word "teabagger" around.

  17. Anyone have the final thoughts from Tim Hennessy to close Saturday's Harvard at North Dakota mens hockey radio broadcast recorded and available?

Tim Hennessy, a man with unquestionable allegiance, (paraphrased) said the logo never scored a goal and went on to state why if losing the "Fighting Sioux" moniker and logo causes you to no longer be a fan or reduces your interest then you really never were a fan of what this program stands for.

Exactly. I was very glad I got back to my car in time after the game to hear him say this.

Remember: It was the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH DAKOTA Fighting Sioux....not the Fighting Sioux of the University of North Dakota.

    University comes first.

  18. As Smoggy said, we would probably be more likely to have games on if CBS doesn't have to haul their equipment to Grand Forks just to show the game. Maybe that will be the kick in the pants necessary to get the infrastructure updated.

In order for this to be the case, wouldn't UND have to be one of the few teams in the conference without the HD equipment? Tell me how many teams in the conference broadcast their home games in HD; or maybe the better question is which teams even broadcast their games on TV at all?

  19. I believe they just use the cameras FSSN uses, like FCS does right now. But I'm not positive on that. For something like this they may use their own cameras, but I don't think those channels are HD at all.

I would bet CBS college sports brings their own cameras/equipment. They did a CC/DU game this year in HD, and last year's Friday night UND @ CC game was on CBS college sports in HD. I don't think CC has much of any TV package let alone HD equipment in their building...unless they webcast in HD because that's the only way to watch their games that aren't produced by someone else's TV network.

  20. To refresh everyone's Final Five memory...

In 1999 UND was runner up to DU at Target Center. In 2000, UND beat Wisco at Target Center. We've played pretty well there in the past. These were my first two Final Fives, and despite the building I still got hooked on the darn tourney...haven't missed one since! I (mostly) seem to remember not having a problem finding a good time in downtown Minneapolis.
