  1. Was Guentzel the true driving force behind the Gopher success under tDon...makes you wonder

I seem to remember hearing that the players liked him, and that he was kind of their liaison to Lucia.

  2. Nice to see all the kind words on here about Lucia. He has two rings that your coach hak doesn't have, Until that happens, maybe you should take a step back from slaming the guy.

I wasn't necessarily slamming Lucia as I was critical toward his assistants. Clearly the quality of his assistants isn't what it usually is.

Sioux_Hab_it on the other hand... ;)

  3. Are the gophers ever going to play in a Final Five again before they start repeatedly missing the Big Ten tournament?

I think their problems are completely due to coaching - especially at the assistant level. Their guys just aren't getting coached up.

  4. The Sioux are now, and for the next few games, taking a journey to a place where the climate is perfect for the cultivation of bad habits. Provided the Sioux advance to the Final Five, the first period of play there will be a huge eyeopener for the team.

Although I'd rather they put up 7 goals in 21 minutes than squeak out a one-goal victory against MTU...

  5. Why is Kariya the measure?

    Kariya's best college season:

    1992-93 U. of Maine H-East 39 25 75 100 12

    Tony Hrkac's best college season:

    1986-87 U. of North Dakota WCHA 48 46 70 116 48

I suppose they used Kariya as the measuring stick since that was his freshman season.

  6. Anyone know if the UNO and Denver game is on TV. Or any other WCHA game besides the MN.

Per the College Hockey 2010-2011 thread, it looks like the DU/UNO game is on FS Rocky Mountain. Other games listed there as well.

  7. I think he is saying that if you have the #1 seed in the tournament, that means you won the MacNaughton Cup and that means you get to hang a banner. Of course, other schools (including a certain school in Minneapolis) hang banners for runner-up finishes and AAU titles from the 1930's. But we hang banners for WCHA and NCAA titles only, along with one banner that has all of our WCHA tournament titles and another one that has all of our Frozen Four appearances on it. I think we'll be hanging one green banner in a few weeks and possibly another white banner come April! :)

I think you have your colors backwards, but I share your enthusiasm and optimism! ;)

  8. Uh-huh, and that tells me all that I need to know about you and what kind of person you are. Carry on, Goon, I'll try to stay on the high road from now on.

So you can make assumptions about Goon based on his posts, but one can't make assumptions about Cooke based on his actions on the ice?

  9. Goon,

do you think they will keep the Final Five (Or whatever it's called) in St. Paul if they create the BTHC? I am worried they would move it to Denver.

Are you assuming the BTHC would snag St. Paul for its conference tourney? My guess is the BTHC would choose Chicago or something more "Big Ten"

There would still be 4 Minnesota teams in the WCHA, so St. Paul would still make a lot of sense for the WCHA. Omaha certainly has the facility. Denver wouldn't draw well IMO.

  10. The only people that think he's overrated are Viking fans, so go figure.

I know you didn't say ALL Vikings fans, and you can count me as one who certainly doesn't think Rodgers is overrated. Packers fans are extremely lucky to have him. How many teams are able to replace a legend QB and not miss a beat, let alone win a SB just a few years later? Ask Miami, Denver, Buffalo...the list goes on.

Vikings fans who think Rodgers is overrated are, in my mind, simply wishing they had what the Packers have at QB. Seriously...how many Vikings fans (myself included) didn't like Favre when he was a Packer, but loved him once he started winning games for the Vikings?

Maybe if we're lucky we'll get Rodgers when he's 39 and has one good year left in him!

  11. The whole "gotta be a Twins fan AND a Vikings fan" thing doesn't wash. I'm a fan of both the Twins and Vikings...does that mean I should be a gopher fan too???

The Packers were established in 1919...the Twins moved to Minny and the Vikings were established in 1961. I'm sure a heck of a lot of people from this area were fans of the Packers long before the Vikings started here because the Packers were the most regional team. Their kids and grand kids then grow up with the same rooting interest. Why would they switch because a new team comes to town? I'm from ND, born & raised a Sioux fan, and a UND alum. I sure as heck ain't gonna encourage my kids to be gopher fans because I now live near the TC metro!!! ;)

  12. I guess it bothers me when players aren't too committed to UND and the culture. Granted Toews and Parise weren't here long, to think a recruit would come to UND for one season really bothers me.

If a kid has the goal of getting to the NHL "as fast as he can" and chooses UND as a development step, it tells me he has an awfully high opinion of our program and culture.

  13. Don't think we were prepared for the disappearance of #5. The team needs to find a way to regroup. I have a sense that this could be one of our sweeps of the year, one not in our favor. HOPE I am wrong.

I don't know how they could be prepared for losing Genoway.

Overall they haven't been playing well, with or without Genoway.

They've been good at coming back to pull out wins on Saturdays. Again, tonight's 3rd period will set the tone for tomorrow.

  14. It's not the ice sheet. It's not that they're the "quicker" team.

The Sioux are flat. For the last three weeks they've been fighting the puck and not playing positional hockey. They are making poor decisions in their own zone.

They'll come out of it. I just hope it's soon. Maybe the week off will do some good. It certainly can't hurt.

Tomorrow will be another opportunity to right the ship. A split would be fine. Plus...there's still 20 minutes left tonight!

  15. It shows Hakstol became an assistant coach at UND on July 1, 2000. When did Grant accept a scholarship from Minnesota? It would be odd if he didn't accept a scholarship after that, and if he did, when would Hakstol have had a chance to watch him play to evaluate him. This question is directed at you Lomackman.

FYI - Hak was a head coach in the USHL for the same two years Grant was there, so I'm sure he saw him plenty. I'm not trying to weigh in on the subject, just pointing out that Hak probably saw him play quite a bit even though he wasn't actually on UND's staff.

  16. You also have to remember college hockey is very different from the Blais/Gasparini days.

    1) Neither won a title in a 16 team NCAA Tournament format.

    2) Parity is MUCH greater in college hockey today. Anyone can beat anybody on any given day in today's college hockey world...especially in a one-and-done tournament.

    3) Recruiting is much different today than it was under Blais/Gasparini. With our immaculate facilities, we've garnered some great recruits. But, great recruits are typically much younger, opposed to the more seasoned kids that won us many titles. Also, these younger, yet more skilled, kids tend to leave early, disrupting the roster frequently. Notice how Blais never won a title in the NEW Ralph, only in the old one, with a much different style of roster? Blais even had Parise/Bochenski/Murray.

Hak has done incredible in his time here, and has won everything but a National Championship. If you give him some time, he will do it. You have to remember, our cold streak of no titles is 10 (going on 11) years...however, this streak started with four years of Blais not winning a title after the 2000 championship.

    To add a couple more...

Didn't teams get home games in the national tourney during Gino's era?

Blais couldn't win the big one with his best teams (IMO '99 & '04). Sure, he got the'97 & '00 teams to overachieve, as well as the '01team; but he obviously couldn't handle the pressure of being favored!

I still wonder what would've happened if BU hadn't upset Michigan in '97 Frozen Four. There's a bit of luck to throw into one of those title runs.

  17. Will be in St. Louis this weekend...was hoping to see Oshie and the Blues but they are on the road as well. Will find some place to watch Friday's UND/CC game there.

Early prediction for Friday...6-0 UND with Hexy and Genoway getting hat tricks!

Wow...Genoway ramping up his "O" for a hatty while the team posts a shutout? The two are mutually exclusive according to the commentary here the past couple of days!!! ;)
