Mallory has been a great part of the program and like to give her a shot but she proved over and over she is not ready for the head coach position. Was hoping that a Roebuck player would see adjustments needed on the fly but that has definitely not happened. Teams zone us and we still run a man offense with no passing to create open looks. Our weak side was nonexistent all year long. Poor shooting usually follows poor shot selection. We don’t move the ball quick enough to get good looks. At the end of the bison game, we needed a play to tie and we left our time out on the board rather than set up a plan for getting a 3 to tie. We had 15 turnovers in the first half against South Dakota throwing inside against a d that dared us to shoot outside. We called one time out the first half. The 4 time outs saved don’t matter when you are down 25 to a good team. Game over. We drive but don’t see the player wide open on the weak side when defense rotates. We continually get beat defensively not rotating to the weak side block. Again no adjustment. Difference between assistant and head coach is you have to see what is happening and make those decisions in real time. That did not happen this year. Hope Mallory will learn and make a great coach someday. She was clearly not ready to do that this year...

#6 UND (15-17) vs #1 NDSU (24-8) 3/10 800 PM

Clearly need depth, but also need guys that want to make something happen. Brown drove once and scored but never even attempted it again. Not hard to shut down a single option offense. Defensively we must know they are going to throw up 3s. Cant give 6 feet of space to let them spot up time and time again... -
Our girls, particularly the freshman, have no idea how to stop vertical penetration. We play matador defense which, assuming we get help side, leaves someone else wide open without good rotation. There is a reason we give up nearly the century mark every game on defense. This has been an atrocious problem for at least the last 4 years. There was a game last year where I was praying for a switch to zone after watching us give up what seemed like 20 uncontested layups to Idaho. We apparently don’t coach or teach defensive skills to stop a drive at all. Offensively, we can look good in transition at times. Too many turnovers but that happens with a running offense. The problem is we have no half court offense at all. Our entire offense before was give it to Lexi Klabo and see what she can do against a double or triple team. She was incredible but got no help from our offensive scheme. Anyone watching film this year overplays us badly to the outside which effects our 3 point shooting. What hurts is we don’t adjust to what everyone is doing to us. No back door cuts, we never take the base line when it is wide open - NDSU’s thugs down low were physical but neither fast nor athletic. We should have had a field day forcing them to rotate but we continue to just pass the perimeter game after game. I think there is talent there but the system needs serious help before success is going to find them. Hard to watch right now...

As a bit of good news, I do believe that recruiting quarterbacks and receivers will be easier under Danny’s offensive scheme. What great receiving recruit is salivating at going to a program whose head coach continually talks about a four yards and a cloud of dust. There is a reason why we lost Kenny Golladay. Hopefully that will be better in the future and Schuster does have the ability to look downfield as evidenced by the one game he got to show us what he can do. Our big receivers have a place. Unfortunately we had an entire receiving corps of clones that all fit that description and used no speedsters to stretch the field with separation. Of course, that would have required kett to throw longer than 5 yards as well. Running game would have been helped with any sort of vertical threat and a qb that looked more than 5 yards downfield. That should be much better next year with Schuster. Get Izzy and McKinney healthy with maag and that could be an interesting receiving corps. The trenches definitely need to be bigger and more physical to do well in the mvfc. Hopefully that will be a focus in the offseason. We need consistency on d. The Davis and Montana state games we showed glimpses of brilliance when we hit, tackled, and pursued like und d of old, but that was short lived and unfortunately not a consistent effort in every game. Hopefully will improve next year... we weren’t always pretty but did show we could have Played with everyone other than the bison, who were just clearly better. No reason to think we can’t be even better next year despite the mvfc schedule. Here is hoping for improvement in a number of areas and a better season next year.

No need for negativity at this point. We are in the playoffs which means all records are 0-0 at this point. Congratulations Bubba and the boys. This is what we have wanted the last several years. Consistency has not always been there but we have shown we can play with some of the better teams in The country. We may be one of those underdogs you don’t want to play - at times we can look great. That is what we need for playoffs and will be excited to make that happen!!!

Anyone not know we were going to run 3 times for no gain instead of trying to score when we NEED a statement win????
-
Need to temember we have tight ends to throw to.... haven’t seen one yet...
-
Kett through that interception without even looking at the receiver. If he had, it was wide open ahead of where he through....

Before the game, many of us would have been happy to be in this game on the road against a very good team. It was just hard to watch us take a clear path to winning and throw it away. I have to believe our coaches told the returners to take a knee unless you have a clear path to getting 30 or 35 yards. Nobody would predict a fumble from someone who has been one of our most electric offensive threats. We were outmatched on the line but made enough plays to stay in it. Offensively I thought we needed the trickery as we were not winning it in the trenches. Haven’t all year. Glad to see we have added a slant to our repertoire and not just 3 yard passes to the flats. They worked well. I am seriously hoping however that we are scouring the country to improve our kicking game. That can’t get much worse. Need to finish strong and we should be in. Several quality wins and a good showing on the road against a top 5 team. Not done yet!!!

Was an interesting game. We played down to the opponents level at times which happens. Starters are solid although Walters has to play stronger. Rebraca and Ekens are all conf potential if they continue to progress. Brown and Stewart were solid. Brown still needs to hit the wide open 3 when it comes and didn’t. Stewart has the potential to be a major playmaker but needs to know when it isn’t there. If they correct those things they will be solid. Moody is a great offensive threat but still has a ways to go defensively. Many of Crowns points came from whoever Moody had defensively. Brady seemed like a good strong hustle kid, but plays like a 4 and isn’t very big at 6’4 for that role. Plays hard though. Coudreau is just a step away from breaking through. Nice touch from the outside Seems like he is still learning team defensive mechanics but could be a big help off the bench if he continues to improve. Not sure why atelbauers isn’t playing as our guard play past Moody is not pretty. The new big man may be okay but will need to adjust to the speed of the game. It’s going to get a lot more skilled than crown college. That was my take. Overall optimistic but depth is a concern. DAE and Rebraca are going to be fun to watch.

The fact that the qb head is pulled down to the side and his chest as it happens is pretty telltale to me.

IMG_4037.MOV Bison catch another break. Here is the photo and video of the face mask at the end of the SDSU game that would have been 15 yards and 1st down instead of 3rd and 23. Obvious as hell. SDSU qb’s head snapped to the side. No call IMG_4037.MOV

Extra congratulations to the d coaches this week. Key injuries to work around and they came ready to play next man up. Hitting hard and pursuit like the Sioux D of old. Awesome to see again!!!!
-
Someone needs to tell kett that going backwards for 20 yards is not his answer...
-
Kett has to find a way to complete a drive. Looks okay for a few sets of downs and then misses everything and makes poor decisions that stall out...
-
Can we connect a pass - please???
-
Getting beat to the puck by a team we should have a speed advantage over... need some hustle to turn this thing around...
-
Great kick!!! Can’t say I was confident but great kick!!!
-
Bubba ball. Get a lead and stop doing what got you there. Go to up the middle runs with the box full. Never changes...
-
D has been solid until 3rd and long or 4th down and we can’t get a stop...
-
Any girls soccer players that can kick a ball over 30 yards????. Can’t believe we have no other athletes that can kick or punt better than what we are seeing now....

I don’t think we can be surprised that our qb and wr play is poor. First, from a recruiting standpoint, what interest are you going to get from top recruits at those positions when all you hear out of Bubba year after year is “4 yards and a cloud of dust.” Kenny Golladay left because the program would never have utilized his abilities. In the first half, Kett was averaging 2.5 yards per (rare) completed pass. For years, we have refused to stretch the field, although Danny certainly has been better and could possibly change that reputation. What qb or wr with top talent dreams of every catch at or within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage. We have receivers that all fit the same mold. Tall receivers that can’t separate. Again, difficult to recruit downfield threats when they would never expect to see a ball downfield We have shifted to a pass first scheme this year but don’t have the personnel to match. Kett has never been that guy and certainly was not ready for EW game. Tommy showed glimpses of what can be done in that scheme. If they really go back to Kett again, Chaves will almost be at the point of stepping in. Love Bubba for all of his good traits, but there comes a time when he has to step forward and be a good coach which includes making the right personnel decisions - not just the union mentality of seniority...

Grabbing for the ball instead of tackling is clearly not working...

Need serious tackling drills this week. Bison are very talented but we are making them look a lot better with 3 and 4 missed tackles a play....
