Like how the intangibles (Pride, Spirit, Force) don't even meet the committees own criteria: The committee decided the school's name needs to be unique, promote pride and fierceness, embody the state and region and unify people. Except for being unique. And there's a reason they are unique... NO ONE WANTS THEM! -

Didn't they leave it off the original list "by accident" saying something of the opposite like hard to trademark? -

Quote: "North Stars," one she did move forward, was chosen because it had been submitted multiple times with accompanying comments Friesz saw as passionate. "A beacon of stability and consistency; symbol of the north and of success," one anonymous submitter wrote. "It's a prominent point that guides people toward their goals," wrote another. -

And he's the chairman. So what he says had a lot of weight. ""I kind of like the 'Spirit,' as kind of the spirit of North Dakota," Committee Chairman and UND alumnus Karl Goehring said. "It just sticks out a little bit to me." Herald articles have people stating they like intangibles, north stars, and schweigert liking hawks. Oddly silent on the peoples choice of Roughriders. -

What does it really matter if Red River is the Roughriders? Don't wanna be a copycat? Google all the names. 90% are already in use by another team somewhere. Id rather have a duplicate than Spirits. Few Herald readers will get confused with the headlines: "Roughriders fall to Fargo North in boys basketball"? Someone needs to go through the list and list all the names and what schools use them. (Hard for me on a cell phone). -

Getting nervous no one on the committee has said their favorites are everyone else's favorites. Cavalry, Roughriders, Explorers. -
I'm in the no nickname is better than spirit or sundogs camp.
-
So let's just have the debate in one.
-
So you don't want a new nickname. Some people want a new nickname. Wouldnt the compromise be. Get a new nickname so those new nickname fans can have that. And the no nickname fans can jut buy plain UND gear and not cheer on the new nickname?

I don't have a middle name. Makes me feel badass. But my birth certificate says "nmn" on that space. So Technically..

Now move all the discussion here. It'd be 200 pages.

I don't think excelling in sex is a "bad thing." -
The only safe way is official ballots mailed out to out of city\state alumni. And a couple polling places on campus for gf residents and UND students.
-
Not only is roughriders by far the favorite new nickname among the masses, but dare I say also is already starting to evoke passion and pride...
-
If UND becomes the Roughriders. Maybe there will be a movement to change Red Rivers name...to Cavalry. They could even keep the same logos.

Will someone start a nickname vs no nickname thread? This is getting tiresome to those of us that actually want to discuss UNDs NEW NICKNAME! -
Based on herald polls, I don't think barely anyone "could care less".

University of North Dakota Fighting Nodaks to keep the Sioux name...

Au contraire. Native Americans were the original Roughriders. In fact, there's a Roughrider statue right outside the front of the Ralph. A Roughrider is a skilled rider of little-trained horses, especially one who breaks horses for riding. That's where TR and his men got the name from.
