Thinking out loud: If the GF Herald offered same-day Saturday and Sunday home delivery in Fargo/Moorhead/West Fargo, I wonder how many UND fans would subscribe (and go to weekday only Fargo Forum).

From UI's appeal, namely the letter from US OCR to UI regarding campus climate: The OCR seems to think campuses need this crazy concept called "free speech", even if the speech offends some. I guess the NCAA needs to have a "teachable moment" with the US OCR.

If they grant UI's appeal with that basis, doesn't the NCAA tacitly admit that every appeal should be granted because they overstepped their bounds?

There's a nasty echo when I read that and think about UND.

If you say "hostile and abusive" don't you have to put the little "TM" by it and credit Miles Brand a quarter every time?

Duluth is a young and excited team. Their only loss is to Northern Iowa. They run an unconventional offense. Their coach knows our defense. It'd be foolish to expect anything less than a full challenge from a team that hung 38 on Nebraska-Omaha last week.

I can only think of one UND "throwback" jersey that would pass muster with the NCAA's latest dance with PC --> the (ugly) block letters Kendall Baker "North Dakota" models. Of course, "Dakota" is a tribal name ....

You forgot the NDSU student who nearly "power hour-ed" himself to death within the last three years also. There seems to be a new focus on binge drinking at all the regional campuses. Recent events put a "rightly so" behind that. This has become a binge drinking fest. I'd rather see UND get ahead of it and tame it back down (I'm not saying knitting party, just something tamer) before someone ends up in the hospital and headlines (or worse).

From the DS: From the Herald: Some interesting questions: - Can a private organization (that appears to be a monopoly) limit the free speech of a public institution? - Has the NCAA breeched its constitution (the contract of what it does for and with members) and overstepped its bounds in this case?

Ms. Carson's letter seems to go to great lengths to tell us who to and who not to listen to: In the NOT to category: - UND's administration - ND State Board of Higher Education In the TO category: - the NCAA - democratically elected tribal governments - the NCACS (accreditation body) - various Indian Education Associations The catch is this: Who is put in place by the people of the State of North Dakota to run the University of North Dakota? (Hint: The elected governor names ND SBoHE members who select the president.) I don't recall voting for Miles Brand, any tribal chair, or the rest.

Didn't I tell you we need to modify that pant leg stripe to look more like a sword in a sheath against the side of a leg? If using a group name as a mascot is "hostile and offensive" as some tell us, then removing "Sioux" and replacing it with the name of the greatest enemy of the Sioux should make the Sioux really happy because then we'd be "hostile and abusive" a Sioux enemy. GrahamKracker, About your signature, "Do you think JESUS would wear a SIOUX Jersey??" We can never know. As a public institution, someone would be offended by bringing religion (Jesus's statement) into a public campus discussion and put the ACLU all over us. I could only guess as to who would do it. We try to slap a label on something and claim we understand it. The world is much more complex than labels. You can interact with the world one of two ways: - You can open your mind and enjoy and embrace the naturally occuring diversity of everything around you accepting that some things may be novel and some common, some good and some bad, some miserable and some enjoyable or - You can put labels on everything as an attempt to pigeon-hole everything around you into simple little conformist containers that your brain can wrap itself around so you never have to think about and understand the complexity that is everything.

'Kessel'? I saw a "Duncan" ripping around the ice, "Notermann-ing" a point blank shot, and then scoring on an off-speed job later. I saw a "Kozek" fire a nasty twisted-wrister from 50 feet past a pretty solid goalie. I saw a "Toews" draw "Notermann" twice from point blank by being in the right spot at the right time.
