UND College of Business and Public Administration receives $10 mi
The Sicatoka replied to 82SiouxGuy's topic in Community
I'm a little confused by all the numbers rolling around in that article. Like ... What I do get is this: If $30 million in other donors show up, this anonymous person makes a total of $40 million. -

If it makes you feel better, KFGO is running it in the local news on-air and on-line. http://www.kfgo.com/news_Detail.php?ID=9285

1. Murphy was on the ND SBoHE for seven months. (He couldn't keep up with the time commitment and resigned.) However, that should give him some credibility with that group. That's good news. 2. What about the rest of those elected yesterday? What about the 2/3 council vote needed to a) repeal the ban on tribal referendums (savvy play by RHHIT getting that one passed just last year), and b) 2/3 council vote needed to call for a tribal vote on the issue? That's bad news. 3. Will we get this far based on 2?

That's called "Don Adam reporting", also known as "I just make this $#!+ up as I go along."
-
You won't change what the SBoHE decides to do. However, showing up at noon (get some "lunch time" crowd walk-ups) with more than 50 people to promote Demcracy All Over: Free Standing Rock! would be a mighty, mighty statement. And it would pressure the media to talk about it.

Name protesters rally ...

I'm still missing Dr. Charles E. Kupchella:

I have a feeling Womens Hockey may soon need its own forum.

Is it amazing to anyone else that the number of people who are supposed to decide this issue keeps getting smaller and smaller. When the tribal councils passed resolutions against the nickname, they were thrown in our faces as "proof" that all Sioux people were against UND's use of Fighting Sioux. Now that the people of the reservations show that they don't agree, they're thrown under the bus. The only opinions that count are those of a few AI students at UND. Let's roll back to a 2006 Charles Kupchella interview with USCHO.com:
-
All this begs the question: How many American Indian students at UND see the issue the same way that Annis does? Once again, I'll bet it's not as great as we've been led to believe. (see: Spirit Lake referendum results)
-
Strange, ... when Ms. Annis (I believe the daughter of a long-time protester) thought the tribe was on her side it was "respect the tribe!" Now that Spirit Lake supports UND and Standing Rock may soon show the same, suddenly, she throws them under the bus. She's now claiming that it's not the tribal government or the whole of tribal members that matter, but only the tribal students on campus whose opinion matters.

Make it a simple theme: Free Standing Rock
-
Minor details update.
-
Work out the details for today's college (and local resident) generation.
-
If the message is "Free Standing Rock" (let them vote!) any time is the right time.
-
Make this all about "Democracy at Standing Rock." Let's see the media make Sioux fans out to be bad people when we're promoting democracy! Let the Sioux People speak for themselves! Free Standing Rock!
-
On Thursday when the SBoHE meets, there will be a nickname protest at American Indian Student Services. Isn't it nice that they can find time in their busy day to hold an anti-nickname media event? So .... Someone needs to organize a "Support Democracy at Standing Rock" event. A nice touch would be a peaceful, respectful march on University Avenue from Wilkerson to the Union. Rally in front of the Union at noon! That's where the State Board is meeting. Carry signs supporting a referendum at Standing Rock and their right to democracy! Wear your Fighting Sioux garb! Support the Sioux name by supporting the Sioux People and their right to be heard! OK "Facebook, Twitter, flashmob-generation" ... make this happen.* Show up and be heard so others at Standing Rock can be as well. And if you do show up: Be smart, be civil, laugh at the other side because they're anti-democracy. "Be Better, Be North Dakota! ... Go Sioux! " * One of you on campus needs to take the ball on this because I'm too far away to make it work.

I do enjoy that Mr. Fool Bear is calling out the hypocrisy of Mr. McNeil. Mr. McNeil (who claiming to be "traditional" changed his name to His Horse is Thunder) wants it both ways. It's good that someone's calling him on it.
-
Call me cynical, but I'm thinking Brett Favre to Greg Lewis wouldn't help this.

You don't ever dare scold, upgrade, or reprimand the actions of the "enlightened and respectful nickname opponents". You can't even do it when they've moved into insubordinate or uncivil behavior. So you surely dare not give them any sort of warning even in the face of (rightly) anticipated continued patterns of behavior. Only the "nasty, racist nickname supporters" need be chastised for actions that have never happened and can only be imagined to occur.
