redwing77 Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 As silly as this sounds: Which tribe is wanting to do it? If it is a Sioux tribe... Tell them to wait until the nickname issue is resolved before making a final decision... The "subtle" hint will be taken and the matter will either go away or UND could find itself having an ally. If it is Turtle Mountain, perhaps we can sit down with them and do some wheelin' and dealin' in regards to certain things that have been found to be important to GF residents (not just the nickname change possibility). But yeah, Kudos to the GF Residents for saying no so far. Quote

Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa...IIRC Regardless of tribal affiliation, I hope that approval for or against a casino in Grand Forks is based on economic and community issues and not the UND nickname. I hope the citizens of Grand Forks do not try to "buy" tribal approval for a Native American UND logo. Quote
dakotadan Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 I am obviously in the minority here but I just don't think that a casino being built in GF will bring all the doom and gloom that I have heard some say it will. I don't believe that Pawn shops will be on every single street corner or that drugs and alcohol will take over everyone's life. This is obviously only in very preliminary stages and nothing is even close to happening yet. I am glad that the City Council is at least willing to hear the proposal and do some preliminary talks with Turtle Mountain without just immediately shutting down the idea. Maybe I am just being too optimistic but I would like the community to also look at the potential benefits before closing down the idea on the perceived downfalls. Quote
Cratter Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Casinos are bad for communities. No one wants to live in those areas because of all the crime they bring. Just take Vegas for example. Closer to home...the TRF casino has been horrible for that town. Quote

Cratter Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Vegas is probably a bad example. They are one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas. I was being sarcastic. These ministers keep citing "laziness," "ill-gotten gain" and "addiction/lack of self-control," as well as an increase in bankruptcies, crime, divorce and suicide. With all those I wonder why people would want to live in these corrupt communities. Mississippi casinos are epicenters for population growth. Quote
Nodaker Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 Regardless of tribal affiliation, I hope that approval for or against a casino in Grand Forks is based on economic and community issues and not the UND nickname. I would argue that the UND nickname is a community issue. Not the only issue but at least part of the issue. Go Sioux!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

BleedGrn Posted December 2, 2005 Posted December 2, 2005 I just don't see that big of benefit to Grand Forks if they let a tribal casino into town. Yes there may be some economical gains, but I don't see them as outweighing any disadvantages, perceived or otherwise. I'd like someone to tell me what a casino would bring to Grand Forks that isn't already close enough. If you bring in the casino, it brings 100% of the local attractions right into town, but what does that really gain with already having 90-95% of the local attractions within 60-90 miles? Quote
redwing77 Posted December 3, 2005 Posted December 3, 2005 (edited) I agree that the UND nickname is a community issue and one that is important to the community. We aren't going to be buying the nickname if Turtle Mountain comes into GF with a casino. They are Chippewa not Sioux. Being that it is Turtle Mountain, it can be an economic issue. I don't see how an organization can be dealt with in good faith when they turn around and call a major piece of the local community they are trying to get into economically hostile and abusive. Therefore, if it is a Sioux tribe wishing to bring a casino into GF, I'd vote no. I'd liken it to a guy coming to my door and saying "Your home is ugly because that red reminds me of the oppression of your hispanic neighbors and your brothers and sisters are idiots, but hey, would you like to buy some of my star spangled widgets to help support my family?" No. Not at all. No way. Edited December 3, 2005 by redwing77 Quote

redwing77 Posted December 4, 2005 Posted December 4, 2005 (edited) Now I gotta worry what color my house is?! And my truck! I drive a red truck! The red truck is hostile and abusive because it symbolizes on how you drive over the plight of the NA people, their lands, and their culture. You should be ashamed of yourself. However, would you care to buy these nice name-brand merchandise to help me pay the mortgage on my house? Edited December 4, 2005 by redwing77 Quote
