brianvf Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Also part of that CHN article was this: Quote Meanwhile, U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) have agreed to a bipartisan bill that would set numerous new NCAA rules into law. The bill — called the Protect College Sports Act — has been negotiated over months. If it passes through both houses of Congress, it would give the NCAA a limited anti-trust exemption. Among its key components: * Permits just one transfer before a player must sit a season, with certain exceptions * Codifies the five-year eligibility * Prohibits former pro athletes if they earned compensation beyond prize money * Grants legal protection to the College Sports Commission — established as part of the House settlement — to enforce strict standards over NIL deals and revenue share caps (though conferences would have individual authority to set their own caps) * Bans the "Power 4" from creating a "super league" * Limits agent fees to 5 percent * Permits pooling media rights * Bars coaches from leaving their team before the season ends The one transfer and the limit of pro athletes rules would both be welcome IMO. That'd get rid of these ECHL pros that Powers loves to sign...get those guys out of college hockey. And also no more 2 or 3 school guys that just transfer to a new school after every season. I would like to see both of those rules go into effect, if they can be enforced, of course. Quote
AlphaMikeFoxtrot Posted May 28 Posted May 28 Graduation rate will decline, hopefully they brought that up when selling the exemption and alternative since that's supposed to be the point of it all. We will see fewer (if any) Cooper Simpsons staying loyal to their hometown through high school and more Cole Bumgarners going to juniors too early. Quote
siouxfaninseattle Posted May 29 Posted May 29 No pros -period. One transfer -period. Five years of eligibility -period. No 3 on 3 OT -period. No shootouts - period And stay off my lawn! 2 Quote
brianvf Posted May 29 Posted May 29 I don't care what Powers says, this is still stupid: https://valleysunhockey.substack.com/p/inside-jack-obriens-unlikely-road Quote “Be mad at the NCAA rules,” O’Brien said. “It’s just a bunch of noise. I’m not gonna be 28 — I can only be 25, turning 26, and my birthday’s in May so I wouldn’t even be playing.” Unlike what many assumed, O’Brien won’t have four years of eligibility. The NCAA docked him two years for his time in the ECHL, leaving him with just two seasons in college hockey. “That is the price he paid for playing two years in the ECHL,” Powers said. “I think the narrative is this is some sort of act of desperation for us to bring a player in and it’s anything but that. Jack O’Brien is a really good hockey player and a great human being that any program will be lucky to have.” 2 Quote

Everyone is pissed because he obviously wasn't on a ATO for two years. If it's not desperation, why not get a player that is in juniors last year and not a guy in the pros? Arizona State loses any of those first 6 games, everyone will be laughing at Powers and the team he built since he's the only one doing the recruiting now. Quote “I thought I kind of got hosed,” O’Brien said. “They made that rule change right at the beginning of my first year pro and then I signed a pro contract. That must mean I can't go to college, right?” Yep, you signed a contract which means you shouldn't be able to clear the NCAA Clearinghouse 3 Quote

cberkas Posted Sunday at 10:24 PM Author Posted Sunday at 10:24 PM Looks like some people took the bait on the fake Chris Johnson account 😂 If it’s from Chris Johnson’s real account or Elliotte Friedman then I’d believe it 2 Quote
brianvf Posted Monday at 07:42 PM Posted Monday at 07:42 PM DU will be good on paper, for sure. They picked up a few excellent pieces on their backend after losing Pohlkamp and Buckberger. I'd still take our d-corps over theirs...I also like our forward skill and depth over theirs. UMD will be tough. They'll have the best forward group in the NCHC (and one of the best in the country too). Our goalie situation and d-corps is better though. WMU lost a lot but gets back their two best dmen. SCSU got decimated. ASU lost their three best players and brings in some AHL/ECHL experience on top of a solid recruiting class. I think it'll be a 3-horse race for the NCHC title between UND, UMD, and DU. Then a decent gap to the 4th place team. Quote
atxsioux Posted Monday at 11:19 PM Posted Monday at 11:19 PM Western has been woefully quiet in recruiting it seems like but Pat will find a way like he typically does. Quote

Agreed - He was the one player that came to mind that will be solid for them. The fan "conspiracy" take would be that Freschwieler is preoccupied with possibly interviewing with the Kings in LA... Would be very surprised to ever see him coach in Canada, where he'd (likely) be run out of town in 3 years. He's waiting on the Avalanche or a young US team where he's guaranteed 5 years minimum. Really not much room though, got a couple of guys, a new goalie in the portal and have a decent class coming in already, plus wisdom and whitelaw are staying. We'll be solid but it definitely hasn't been as flashy as other teams off-seasons have been. Quote
AlphaMikeFoxtrot Posted yesterday at 03:25 PM Posted yesterday at 03:25 PM If you want to know which schools might shutter (or cut hockey out of desperation to save money), this lists the financial health of all private non-profits in the US. Some MIAC D3 schools look shaky. Niagara, Merrimack, and surprisingly Clarkson all score low. AIC and Mercyhurst are low too if that's any indicator. https://www.forbes.com/lists/college-financial-grades/ 1 Quote

If they put teams in Phoenix metro, I hope the teams build an arena and not use Mullett Arena. But ASU does dumb things and a USHL/NAHL team will end up playing there. Quote
