Poor Tom Hanks had to endure his ride to salvation aboard a freighter. Holland America ships tend to tender into a lot of their ports, meaning they use their life boats to shuttle people to and from the dock and ship stays further out in the harbor. Holland crews are used to sailing those vessels, like the one they used to pick up the pilot. This was probably less stressful to the Holland boat crew than a day tendering or a life boat drill (because they knew they weren't being graded by the captain ). Quote
