GeauxSioux
What are your earliest memories of Sioux sports?? I remember going to Sioux/Bison basketball games when they had freshman, JV and the Big game. My parents would drop us off early so we would be sure to get good GA seats. We were able to see all three games. I remember bits and pieces of Phil Jackson. What I remember most about Jackson was that my brother kept a scrap book about Jackson. Since my dad played basketball for the Sioux, that was the sport that I saw the most as a kid. By the way Microsoft named their new search engine after my dad, Bing. I remember freezing my butt off at the barn and couldn't wait to get hot chocolate in the "heated" area of the building. My dad didn't take me to too many hockey games, but I sure saw a lot as I got older. I recall the Gustafson's and Deutch's in football. I think Memorial Stadium had the best hot dogs on the planet. Growing up in GF, I got to see a lot of the Sioux. Great memories.
fightingsioux4life
I remember going to a lot of hockey games at the Old Ralph with my dad starting when I was 7 years old. That was during the era of general admission tickets behind either goal, so we would go stand in line a couple of hours for tickets. To a grade-schooler, that seemed like an eternity! But it was worth it; I saw a lot of classic games growing up. I remember Bob Joyce's six goal game against Michigan Tech in 1987. I saw a lot of the Hrkac Circus both live and on television (Pat Sweeney and Travis Dunn were the broadcast team). I used to get up for the Badger games the most; I absoultely COULD NOT STAND Chris Chelios or Bruce Driver! I didn't get into football until I was a UND student in 1993, but I did make it to some games as a kid. The team was awful during the 1980's, but I still liked going. I went to a lot of Potato Bowls and Homecoming games. Basketball I went to sporadically, but I didn't learn to appreciate our basketball programs until my college years. Simply put, I was raised on UND sports and I have always bled green and white and always will.
remington_270
When i was a kid, we'd go to the football games at Memorial Stadium to watch an employee of the family business. Then after the game, I'd go around the stands and collect the green and white plastic cups. I'd bring home hundreds after every game. Just 3 weeks ago, we had a garage sale and my mother brought a bunch of them to sell. She didn't make any money on them.......they are sitting on the shelf ready for use as we speak. jimdahl
It's funny, despite being in Middle School in Grand Forks during the Hrkac Circus, I have absolutely no memory of UND athletics from that time. I know my family weren't big fans, but you'd think I'd have noticed it on the news or in the Herald or something. Once I was at UND I started going to hockey games with my brother at the Old Ralph. These were the days of ~2-3000 attendance, so getting there early wasn't required, but we did anyway so we could get the same seats on the aisle in one of the short rows in the student section each time (GA, and free for students, of course). About an hour early did it, even for the Gopher games. It was also right when UND was starting to give NDSU some games in football, and finally broke the streak. I have some overly romanticized memories of a freezing Thanksgiving weekend at Memorial Stadium, of listening to football games on the radio on cool Fall days, and of stopping by this crazy new restaurant in the strip mall -- Dagwoods (original location, when smoke free was controversial). Then in Fall of 1996 I moved away from North Dakota. I'd been writing Sioux Hockey and Football web pages for a couple years for me and my friends to keep track of the schedule and of how each game flowed (oh yeah, that one with the big comeback!) I thought it would be really nice if that could become a site that I, as a distant alum who didn't have access to Sioux info (neither Herald nor UND Athletics were publishing on the net yet) could use to keep up with the Sioux. The Walrus
Hockey: Sitting in Frenchy's watching the 3rd Place (Natl) game where local boy Dean Barsness scores game winner in OT 6-5 against Michigan State 1984.....So many National Titles and Frozen Fours, Hrkac, Johnson, Panzers, Zack.....Just remember the local kid doing good for some reason... Basketball: Men's was back to back wins over Metro State and Anchorage Alaska in the 1989-90 Regional Playoffs at Hsylop, place was packed and electric.....those years the Boys had like a 36 game home win streak, lost one game then ran off another 29 in a row at Home....unbelievable. Womens: 1996-97 Womens National Championship Game held at the Hyslop and on ESPN TV, Sioux Ladies win 1st National Title...Awesome! Ladies have really been a joy to watch the last 20 years.... Football: Tough between two.....Tearing down the Goal posts at Memorial Field when we finally beat the NDSU Bison 22-21 in 1993,was (lmao) when RT says geezz Eddy (Schultz) look out here comes the goal posts while doing the post game interview on the field loaded with Students, Players and Fans....Other one of course would be Florance, Alabama watching Kelby, Luke, Jed and the boys come from behind to Beat Grand Valley State in 2001 and win UND 1st Football National Title.... Baseball: Buck, Zig, Cazzy and all the fellas going to the DII College World Series in 1983 in Tampa, Florida, what a improbable run Wrestling: Back in the Mad Dog- Brad Kerr days when the Sioux beat the Bison in a Duel Meet, Hennesey was refereeing and UND won the match on a unsportsmanlike conduct penality point awarded at the end of the heavyweight match.....Loud as I have ever heard Hyslop with only 250 people in attendance.... Really hard to write just one, as you write you think of so many more National Title Games, Unbelievable Comebacks, Outstanding performances, Great Crowds with Unbelievable atomshpheres.....Sioux Fan since 1979.....Lots of Memories

Leggo4
I would have to say my top two SIOUX Football memories are: 2. Pre-gaming at BW's in Fargo and then watching Jimmy K. catching a 15 yard pass, and then out running all the bison D backs for a 60-70 yard TaDa! 1. Sitting in the front row near where the SIOUX come out onto and off the field in the new Al during the 2000-01 SIOUX-bison game. The SIOUX obviously won the game and the guys brought the Nickle over to the student section, and then to all the fans near the first row until they made it to the tunnel. I was able to touch the trouphy and have not seen the dang thing since!! Good times.
Siouxmama
Hands down, my #1 all-time Sioux sports memory is the 2001 D2 football national championship game. That was awesome. Not an easy find on TV in Las Vegas though. We were there for the NFR, and thought that some of the bars/casinos would have it on TV. No so. Not even The Imperial Palace. Most of the places we asked about it said "D2 football?" We ended up back at our room to watch it on TV there. Another stand out memory was the minutes after the HC/UM game and before the Sioux/Michigan game. Electrifying, so say the least.
