Sioux need a spark here or SC is going to put it away soon.
-
Early in the second, shots were 24-7 Sioux, score 0-3.
-
SC started to even up the play that period. Sioux still playing well. Dunn playing really well. Eids not perfect but he seems to be the #1 guy, at least tonight. Heck of a pass by Kristo in the last minute. He shoots a lot, but he passes well.

Disagree. The Sioux need to get back to the physicality of the first period. SC doesn't like it.
-
The refs did give the Sioux three straight PPs at the end of the period. Really unfortunate period for UND. All that jump, and down 2-0. Mario didn't score on his SH attempt, and Novak did.

Actually Fienhage got caught on the criss-cross and a low-risk situation became high risk. He's played pretty well tonight but you would expect some mistakes. Unfortunately this one ended up in the net.
-
As predicted, the refs are happy to call penalties tonight. Adam: You don't like that I didn't call a penalty last night? I'll show you penalty calls.

That wasn't a classic CFB, where the player is 3 feet from the boards and gets launched head first into the boards (like Bina). It looked to me like the kind of hit the league had in mind with the contact to the head emphasis. Unlike the Leddy hit, where a shoulder hit happened to make contact with the head, Marvin brought his arms and stick up and deliberately drove Genoway's head into the glass. Disappointing from a Warroad kid, especially so for Eades, I'd guess. I don't know what happens tonight. Based on the contact to the head emphasis, I'll be surprised if Marvin plays tonight. Either way, his number is etched into the green club's minds, and eventually he'll get his comeuppance. Whoever does it better be good though, because Marvin is a big strong boy. Where's the Zach Jones rageout when needed? (In fact, Jones may hop in his car and start driving to GF when he sees the replay of that hit.) I had thought the Sioux were not physical enough last night anyway; unfortunately the officials will be on high alert and any hitting will earn the penalty box.

The Sioux might well be able to outskate SCSU, but why play that game when that's SCSU's best chance to win? What I'm suggesting is the Sioux take the body a bit more.

We thrashed it around a bit in the game thread that night. Helgason hits and I think he's exactly the type of player they need there, not that I like it.

The plusses were very obvious in high school. The defensive side was a huge question mark, though, as he didn't have to play in his own end very much on those powerhouse Edina teams. I was anxious for him to play in the USHL so he could learn to play defense. I haven't seen enough yet to have an opinion on how good he's gotten there.

At this point for Fienhage, it seems like it will take an injury or losing stretch for him to get in, neither of which are desirable, but both of which are very possible. I agree that he looked tentative, but it's understandable given how little he's played. I don't think anyone can conclude the coaches have decided he can't play - he's just behind the other guys. It's unfortunate, but his career got sidetracked last year when the team struggled in the first half; to make the NCAA tournament, they had no margin for error, and couldn't work him in. Combined with Miller's emergence, which took another blueline spot, he was the odd man out. With a couple studs lined up for next year, it doesn't get any easier then either.

You left out "unjustified" ...

Savvy play by Gregoire in the waning seconds of the Tech PP; he had a chance to take a not-great shot on a 2-on-1, but he opted to retain possession behind the net and give the tired penalty killers a chance to get off the ice. Late in the third, make the smart play. Seemed very Winnipeg of him.
-
Sioux have played well defensively tonight, but they need to get on their toes again.
-
Third period of a close game, Bruno can't take that penalty.
-
Sioux really need another goal here.
-
If we could see replays tonight, I think we'd have a better appreciation of how well MTU's goalie has played.
-
Where was the Badger goalie on that one? Should maybe be on the bench after that.
-
Woog openly pulls for MN, but he calls the game as he sees it, praising good plays and panning poor ones regardless of who makes them.
-
Giving the Sioux every chance here. 4th PP of the period.
-
Unlike last night, the Sioiux held the zone through the entire 5-3 and generated quite a few chances. Nothing going though.

Big Mac with some nice work keeping the puck in before the goal.
