  1. If it is indeed Landry, here's what the write up from the Herald said about him:

Like King, Landry is a Grand Forks native who played quarterback at a local high school and has a respected dad in prep coaching circles. Landry was a state champion quarterback at Grand Forks Central (a star baseball and basketball player, too) before starting at UND following ... you guessed it: Freund.

Landry, who has connections to offensive line coach Joe Pawlak and played at UND with defensive coordinator Joel Schwenzfeier, has a desirable resumé for this role, as he has experience at the FBS levels with time spent alongside former UND offensive line coach Rod Carey at Northern Illinois and Temple.

Landry has two seasons under his belt calling plays at St. Thomas and two more years experience calling plays in a successful stint at Division III Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Landry has also coached for two seasons at Minnesota-Duluth.

The connection to Pawlak seems like a nice upside.  That maybe can keep him at UND a while longer.

throw in a new OC and a new QB, it gets even tougher.

Who knows, maybe this is our Belichick-Brady combo.  You don't know until you try.

I think he is looking for a FBS opportunity. I don’t think he transferred just to go to another FCS school. One of the best players on the defense last year deserves a shot

Can't remember - did he state a reason (on record) for entering transfer portal?  Any chance he winds up at UND again?  Just can't remember the specifics of this move.

  5. Kind of a random question, but with the U-18 team coming to GF and WJC going on, I began to wonder about how common (or rare) is it for an individual to be on one of rosters but not the other?  For instance, how many players on the current USA WJC roster were on the USA U-18 roster 1-2 years ago?

How can we possibly be light on the d-line? Again. Always. Frustrating

the only thing I can think of is our coaches are ok with the status quo - can that possibly be true?

I doubt that they are ok with status quo.  More likely scenario is that they can't snag the players that would make a difference there.

I'm not crazy about the three week playoff.  That potentially leaves a lengthy break and chance to be rusty if you have a first round upset.  It also feels like they just took what everyone else is doing.  I guess it depends on what the purpose of the conference tourney is, generate money, get more teams into the NCAAs, etc.

I would have liked to see a more innovative format, that really awards regular season excellence.  I'd propose a straight single elimination tourney, but with a couple of modifications.

First week,  3 seed and 4 seed host.    1 and 2 seeds get bye to Semifinals.

    3 seed site (seeds 3, 6 and 7)

    Day 1 -  6 vs 7  Day 2 - 3 vs 6-7 winner to advance to semifinals

    4 seed site (seeds 4,5,8,9)

    Day 1 - 4 vs 9, 5 vs 8   Day 2 - Winners from day 1, winner advances to semifinals

    Week 2 - 1 seed hosts

Friday -  1 seed vs lowest remaining, 2 seed vs highest remaining,  Saturday - Championship

This format provides benefits for regular season performance

1 seed - hosts final four and receives off week and bye to semis

2 seed - receives off week and bye week

3 seed - hosts and only needs 1 win to make semifinal

4 seed - hosts games to reach semifinals

This also gives the host school 2 weeks to prepare for the finals and still keeps a somewhat tournament vibe.  It would also allow a TV partner to schedule all the games at different times over the 2 weekends, with the first round games at the 4 seed being Thursday and Friday and the games at the 3 seed being Friday and Saturday.

    Sounds awesome to me.

  8. Just a curiosity question, and I know opinions will vary, but if you were wanting to hire a Defensive Coordinator, what defensive position coach(es) (not looking for coaches names, but the position they coach) would you be looking at?  Defensive line?  Linebackers?  Does it matter?

    Not the bar owners tho

I’m sure Jacks fans already had tickets will fill the place. I would think Griz fans would also be eager to go. First time in a generation they get to play for a championship.

not getting the entire opinion out of Nelson and Howe

One thing I noticed Kelly especially does is when there is an inexcusable blunder (like 4th and 24 at Murray State) he places blame squarely on the players for not understanding the situation.  Now, would he have turned at least some of the blame to coaches for not preparing players for the situation on the coaching staff had Shannon not been in the room?  Not sure, but it would be a more authentic if the participants didn't have to speak in front of the coach's brother.

On another topic of discussion, is it too much to ask for two Schweigerts to hang it up when it comes to UND football??!!

Danny we complain about the different versions of the short passing game

Not saying this defend Danny, because I’m not a big fan of short passes, but the more FBS and NFL games I watch, passing short of the line to gain is very common.

  12. My hope is that NDSU can’t win back to back to back road games. That would be impressive for any team at any level, plus I still don’t believe NDSU is good enough to overcome a 3 game road trip through seeded teams to get to the championship. Hopefully.

Sounds about like when Bubba said "Leave no doubt" back around 2015.   That didn't work out so well.

"Leave no doubt" was initiated after the 2015 playoff selection committee did not choose them and the part they were to "leave no doubt" about was whether they should be in the playoffs the next season.  In 2016 UND won the Big Sky auto-bid, so, technically, they did "leave no doubt" the next season after implementing that saying.

What is the culture of this program?  Outside looking in, there is no identity.

No insider information here, just basing this on things I've heard, seen, and read, but I would say Bubba's UND culture is based on academics, school pride, responsibility, and compassion.  But throat slitting doesn't appear to part of it (unless you're beating NDSU).  Keeps way too many way too close.
