How we feeling? Wanted to start this to talk all things tournament. I will have another thread about Omaha later on. Playing Sunday 8:30PM. Anyone making it down?

I won’t this year but would like to someday. Very much Looking forward to watching it. The good news is that we’ve already beaten all of the potential opponents that stand between us and championship game. A Quarterfinal loss would diminish the season’s success without a doubt, but this season gave me a lot of hope in UND basketball. Next year should be even better in theory right?

UMKC roster is all bigs are international and most guards are from Arizona.  I was thinking that they would be able to get some local talent given the location.

Geographically, Kansas City is surrounded by some schools that put a big emphasis on basketball: Kansas, Creighton, Wichita State, plus other Power 5 schools (Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas State) all within 3 hours. I’m sure recruiting there is tough.

We seemed to flip a switch midway through the 3rd and put it away.

In my years of watching hockey, how teams play in the third period is a good indicator of their championship mettle.

Happy to eat a little crow here.  After the Saturday loss at CC, I said "this is not a special team."

While that was in a game day thread, which I always maintain is reserved and should be understood to be for single day reactions (not higher level discussions), I would have to say that yes, they did look special tonight.  Congrats on winning the Penne, and for crying out loud dont' stop at this!

It may turn out that getting swept at CC is exactly what this team needed.

Denver is a full >.01 behind us, that's a lot of ground to make up this late in the season. Fluctuation is at most .005 per game, and that's bad losses/upset wins. It's possible, but we would need to faceplant.

Ok, wasn’t sure what those numbers mean and how games affect them. My rationale was that we will play Miami for (hopefully) 2 games. No pairwise gained there. Then we could end playing Denver in the NCHC finals or semifinals, which could be a loss.

  6. So on the topic of #2 vs #3 overall seed, are people excited about potentially getting to #2 so the first game is a much lower pairwise opponent? Right now, St. Cloud State is #14, but with them a NCHC team, would the committee flip to #13 Michigan??  it would be the difference between playing one of them and RIT (#22). I was initially pretty indifferent about being #3 vs #2 but I can see a clear advantage to being #2 so count me in on wanting that as well. One downside of Denver sweeping SCSU which allowed us to win the Cup, is that Denver is now top 4 pairwise right behind UND. I could see them sneaking ahead of us before selection Sunday with all the games yet to be played. In that case, would they steal our spot in Sioux Falls??  Denver is 2 hours closer to SF than Maryland Heights, but still a long ways. I would hope the committee would honor the attendance potential of UND in Sioux falls.

If UMass doesn’t make the NCAA tournament, that would free up the selection committee to place teams “properly” in regions without concerns of hosts.  To be honest, it would be better if the Minutemen are left home, or else an eastern team is coming west and vice versa.

I’m going to change my tune on this. IF UMass is a 3 seed (currently the case at #11 pairwise), then the eastern 1 seeds can stay east, and western 1 seeds can stay west. Put UND in Sioux Falls and make sure Omaha is eliminated and I’m good with the rest.

And UMass got taken to OT (which they won), but that moves them a little bit too.

    This is really good discussion.

I definitely want to try Brad's idea.  The conferences have eschewed neutral sites, so I think there's a chance the NCAA will be on board, especially if the coaches are not resisting it like they once were.  As for Adam's argument that pairwise can't be taken literally for determining home/away (higher seeds), that would only get muddled for maybe 2 tournament games (8-9, 7-10), and would probably even out over time.

Didn't UND/students get in a little copyright/trademark trouble with Jim Henson of the Muppet Show?  I remember getting a tshirt as a kid with Kermit the Frog on the front and it said "Kermit's the way to the NCAA's".

    That I don't know.

    Latest bracketology from USCHO:

Holy region of death in South Dakota.  Any of those four teams could advance.
Hoping that the final brackets don't look like this for UND.

    Providence, R.I.
    1. Boston College
    8. Minnesota
    9. Maine
    16. Bemidji State

    Maryland Heights, Mo.
    2. Boston University
    6. Denver
    10. Providence
    15. RIT

    Sioux Falls, S.D.
    3. North Dakota
    7. Quinnipiac
    11. St. Cloud State
    14. Michigan

    Springfield, Mass.
    4. Wisconsin
    5. Michigan State
    12. Western Michigan
    13. Massachusetts

I'd be pissed if I were BU in this situation.  Get sent out west because you can't play UMass in the first round.  I'd be a little perturbed to be Wisco when you've got two Midwestern based regions and you don't get either of them.  Hosts and venues can't be too happy about those far flung travels, either.  I hope the pairwise sorts itself out before selection Sunday.

Western is playing for their playoff lives. That's scary.

Are you talking about NCHC home ice or NCAA tournament pairwise?  If the former, yes, they need to make up some ground the next two weekends.  If the latter, even getting swept by UND I don't think will push them out of NCAA criteria (at least not yet - unless you've seen math/probabilities to show otherwise).  However, their next opponent is Miami, so they will need to take care of business in that one, or else I could see them outside of the bubble.

If the NCHC quarterfinal remains WMU-CC for the 4/5 matchup, regardless of home team, that will be the most interesting to watch, IMO.  Two teams that will need those wins in the worst way.
