  1. From the Big Sky website announcing the return of University of Idaho:

"The Big Sky Conference has already begun the process of exploring a move to a two-division, six-team format starting in 2014-15 for sports such as basketball and volleyball."

What are your speculations for the two divisions? Here's my theory:

    North Division South Division

    North Dakota Northern Colorado

    Montana Weber State

    Montana State Southern Utah

    Idaho Portland State

    Idaho State Sacramento State

    Eastern Washington Northern Arizona

  2. Right now, UND students' attitude toward football is ridiculous. They would rather think about hockey than be in attendance and watch a UND football game. This whole UND hockey first thing killed student attendance during the transition and its leaked into our first playoff-eligible season. It wasn't bad in the D2 days but when the transition hit everyone at UND became a "hockey-only" fan and it just plains suck.

The only way it will possibly improve is if the team starts winning and over time new students with a respect and understanding of UND football replace the current loser students.

Exactly. I think that by the time this year's freshmen are seniors, student attendance will be up in all sports. Can you really blame fans for being "hockey only" during the transition? The reason that USD has fared better with football, is because they didn't have a marquee sport that wasn't in the transition (like hockey). Hockey has always been, and always will be, very important to UND. And the fact that Ralph Englestad made it possible to nearly double the attendance at every home hockey game didn't help with attendance for other events (including stuff at Chester Fritz). There's so many seats in this town, and just not a big enough market to fill them all, is basically what it boils down to.
  3. Hard to believe that these two teams had the same Big Sky record coming into the game. The VB girls dismantled SUU with ease (game time was only 1:20 or so). Again, I think that win at NDSU really sparked them, and I foresee a good winning streak here. NAU on Saturday should be good competition, but I think they get 'em in 4. Idaho St. on 10/25 should be quite the showdown.

  4. If the O-line can protect the pocket, then Hanson is the guy. But if the pocket collapses, Hendrickson can make plays with his feet. To me, it's more of an O-line controversy - who's gonna show up?

  5. or just Frackers :silly:

This actually would work great on many levels. Think of the different cheers/promotions:

We will we will FRACK you.

FRACK the (Insert opposing teams' name here) (Clap clap clap clap clap)

    FRACK attack

    Meet the FRACKERS

    FRACKER backer

It would be unique - I doubt another team has the name.

It has ties to North Dakota.

It is controversial (not the name, but the practice), giving us a kind of bad-ass edginess.

I think we may be on to something here. Tell me where I'm wrong (like I have to ask!)

  6. I believe you can now add Bowling Green State to our schedule on Dec. 28 or 29th. This should complete the schedule. I believe Bowling Green is a MAC school from Ohio. Should be a good game from the MAC.

Will this be a home or away game?
  7. I know the name "Wildfire" has been mentioned on this thread before, albeit with some pretty harsh reviews. But consider this: It's got history - prairie Wildfires were an uncontrollable force of nature that caused total destruction in ND at the time of settlement. It's got significance - the UND academic logo has a flame in it. Wouldn't a team that opponents can't control and suffer total destruction be the ideal?

  8. If you're going that theme why not ... SCOUNDRELS

Yeah, I know everyone would call UND "dirty rotten ... "

This is one of the few I actually like. There would nothing bad about fan of other teams calling us dirty rotten SCOUNDRELS because we always beat 'em.
  9. I was listening to an interview with the Big Sky Commissioner the other day and he talked about how he looked at athletic programs and how many programs are being built on student fees, guarantee games and institutional support (sfgis) which is not sustainable in the long run. I thought that I would look at the Big Sky schools to see what the conference looked like in that context, plus I just wanted to learn a bit more about the Big Sky and what UND was getting itself into… As I looked at the data, I came up with the following chart – thought it would be useful to share with other just learning about the Big Sky. General description of the chart:

    1. X axis - % of athletic programs budget from sfgis
    2. Y axis - % of athletic budget attributed to football program
    3. Bubble Size – revenue from ticket sales – I choose this as an indicator of the following a program may have.

    General Quadrant descriptions:

Top RHS – Football School with a healthy budget

Top LHS – Football School dependant on sfgis

Lower RHS – non Football dependant with a healthy budget

Lower LHS – non Football dependant on sfgis

NOTE:I added Idaho and New Mexico St just to see how they would fit in..Montana is impressive I can see why the WAC is talking to them..

Mods sorry if the image is too much.. I can delete it you like

Cool data. Do you know what year those numbers are from. Just wondering if they were during UND's transition. I would think UND's money from ticket sales would be going up (possibly way up) starting this year.

  10. Not only was the MidCo deal exciting, looking at the TV schedule we can add two games that will finish our Big Sky home schedule.

North Dakota Invitational: UW Green Bay, USD, SFA

    Fri Aug 31: South Dakota

    Sat Sept 1: Green Bay

    Sat Sept 1: SFA

    Thurs Sept 13 Montana State*

    Sat Sept 15 Montana*

Thurs Sept 20 @ Weber State*

Sat Sept 22 @ Idaho State*

    Sat Sept 29 Sacramento State*

    Mon Oct 1 Northern Colorado*

Thurs Oct 4 @ Eastern Washington*

Sat Oct 6 @ Portland State*

    Tues Oct 9 @ NDSU

    Thurs Oct 11 SUU*

    Sat Oct 13 Northern Arizona*

    Fri Oct 19 @ Montana*

Sat Oct 20 @ Montana State*

    Thurs Oct 25 Idaho State*

    Sat Oct 27 Weber State*

Thurs Nov 1 @ Sacramento State*

    Thurs Nov 8 Portland State*

    Sat Nov 10 Eastern Washington*

Thurs Nov 15 @ Northern Arizona*

    Sat Nov 17 @ SUU*

I also assumed the @ Portland State game to be on the 6th. So if that holds, all we are missing is @ UNC.

Do you think there are some non-conference games between Sept. 1 and Sept. 13? Would be great to get some high RPI teams on the schedule.
  11. Can't. Settlement agreement says we need to pick a new name. My bet is since the NCAA could care less about the laws we pass about the nickname, they probably aren;t going to let us go till 2015 without a nickname.

I do believe that UND was in full compliance with the NCAA during the time the nickname was retired (Jan - Feb 2012).
