Most likely good scenario is Bubba retires next year, Danny Freund is elevated to HC, and Pawlak gets OC
I think this would be the best that can be made with current staff members.
maybe Freund would hire an outsider and say “fix the defense.”would be nice if it would happen in this offseason before next season costs us another year.

No buyout this year
I've been an advocate for Bubba to retire. In that scenario, I've been assuming he would be due no buyout of his contract. Does anyone know if that is indeed correct?

I think this is what UND wants … the followers to be slowly but surely conditioned to accept this mediocre level of production and expectation. For Bubba and his staff, it means a lifetime contract.
I definitely don't agree that's what UND nor its staff want. But wanting something (a championship) and being capable of getting it are not the same. Bubba did what he could, now he needs to get out of the way and let a new guy try his hand.

As I recall, Schmidt left for greener pastures just before Freund was named Associate Head Coach.
Schmidt left UND after 2019 season. Freund was not named Associate Head Coach until earlier this year.
I know a lot of people wax nostalgic for Schmidt, but I seem to remember his defenses being a liability as well.

It's time to retire the 3-4 defense.
I've said it elsewhere, but for a long time, I was proud of UND running a 3-4 defense. Not sure why, exactly, maybe just because it's the defense that took us places in the '90s and '00s (several NDSU wins, an NCAA championship, another NCAA title game). But it sure seems like it's a liability now. Honestly, I don't care what defense we run as long as it's successful. Get someone in there who can design a scheme to stop a modern offense at this level.

I wonder how many players like playing for bubba
It seems like when they are recruited they choose UND because of the staff. Are you posing that they become disillusioned once they get in the system?

Don’t know if the Mussman situation was much of a “surprise” though.

I avoided this thread after the USD game, but now caught up on it. A little surprised that it hasn’t been started up again after yesterday. I am not expecting any jobs lost come tomorrow, but I do hope at some point in the off season we have a new HC (due to Bubba retiring). I’m sure it will be Danny, which seemed exciting at one time but who knows now. At least some things would have to be shaken up in that scenario. A new OC could potentially better recognize game flow strategy. Like many, I think a complete overhaul on defense is necessary. Don’t know if Danny at HC would be brave enough to show Joel the door.

I am fine with Tommy remaining on the team, but I expect a true QB competition at fall camp. Tommy has a lot of good qualities, so having him as a backup option would be ok IMO. It’d be nice to know what you’ve got in a backup in case Jerry or Trey get injured or aren’t as good as everyone hopes.

Poor Elioder, left USD to come to this sh*tshow while his team is seeded and will beat this Sac State team this year.
Yeah, who would’ve guessed USD would outshine UND after their disaster last year. Funny how things go.

Do the honorable thing and retire, Bubba. The AD bid sky high to host a playoff game and you can’t even come through. Inexcusable. Probably others that need to go, as well. Seems like everyone has their flaws.

If we lose this game, at least we can’t lose to NDSU until next season. And NDSU isn’t going to win the FCS, so it’s kind of a win win.
all kidding aside, of course, if we lose this game, there should be some coaches without jobs on Monday.

I am fully expecting a win today. 30-something to 20-something. Let’s get it gone. I want a rematch with the Yotes.

Ive blocked the 2nd half or at least the 4th quarter of the richmond game out of my mind. Also the scheduling was bad.. quite a few people left to get to the hockey game thinking it was over. I would maybe prefer a 1 or 2:00 start, but im fine with the noon start for all the reasons mentioned above.
The hockey game that night was in NYC, so no one left the football game to attend the hockey game. Unless you mean to watch on TV.

I actually thought game times were assigned by the NCAA and/or their broadcast partners (ESPN in this case). I had assumed we just got lucky that a previously unscheduled football game did not interfere with an already scheduled hockey game. But if UND got to pick the time, I would assume it was done so fans could easily attend both the football game and the hockey game on Saturday. Also, making a pacific time team play an early game can also be an advantage, like Johnnyboy said.

Wouldn't that be best case scenario for UND? Wouldn't you want UND to play against a team they already boat raced?
More like best case scenario for NDSU. A chance to avenge the loss that stings the most, in the same season, at home, in a much more meaningful game. You know UND would play scared $hit less in that game. It would be a boat race in the other direction.

At least the season finished on the only remaining good way possible - beating the Bison at home. I am glad for the players who's last collegiate game was last night. This program has a long way to go, so I hope the Tupacs are preparing to deliver on their promises for '24 and beyond.

If there are no signs of progress next season, then I will be concerned about the long-term trajectory of the program.
Agree. Need to make conference tournament at very least.

I am a little skeptical about the Yotes turnaround. Not sure their record or ranking is truly reflective of their team. Doesn’t mean this won’t be a tough game for UND. Hard place to play and track record is not in our favor. I think UND has a little more to play for, so I hope that sense of urgency translates.

I think the offense will be ok if we’re smart with the play calls. If we’re worried about o-line protection, I’d say roll Tommy out to move the pocket and let receivers get open - He can generally find them.

Defensively, I believe our biggest problems are we don’t tackle well, we overrun plays that take us out of position and we lose outside contain or have poor angles on the ball carrier or QB in the pocket or scrambling. Too often we don’t wrap up on the ball carrier.
This has been an area of my curiosity for several seasons. I can’t imagine our coaches don’t know how to teach these things, so are the players just not athletic enough, not smart enough, or what’s the deal?
