He won how many NCHC goalie of the week awards at the beginning of the season?
Then I don't think he won another one the rest of the year (that I recall).Add in his injuries/illnesses, and it was a rough 2nd half for him for sure.
Of course, he could come back for another year if he wanted, but it sounds like that won't happen.
If I were him I’d come back. He’s a goalie, there’s no where to go. He had his moments this year. Run it back.

My Projection based on current info:
Forward (15):
GR - Jamernik
SR - Berg, Kunz, Schmaltz, Montgomery
JR - Blake, McLaughlin, James, Strinden
SO - Perron
FR - Swanson, Boisvert, Croal, Littler
X - PortalDefense (8):
SR - Zmolek
SO - Livanavage, Wiebe, Benoit, Komzak
FR - Jubenvill, Strathmann, EmeryGoalie (3):
JR - Johnson
SO - Hedquist
X - PortalI think (similar to when we did this last year) that next year has the potential to be a better team than this year. Both offensively and defensively.
You lose a dependable scorer in Gaber and a hustle/grit guy in Johannes, but I would expect big years from all the forwards in that JR class and then also for Perron to have a similar improvement like what OMac had from his FR to SO year. Kunz really stepped up his game 2nd half...a VandeVelde type SR year from him would be great. Two elite forward frosh that should impact immediately. Find a diamond in the rough portal grab like Johannes again that can contribute and that is a skilled forward group.
Defensively, Zmolek/Livanagage/Wiebe are the steady core and then add in three very skilled frosh. Strathmann played an extra year of juniors, so I'd expect him to be able to be a reliable/steady dman from the opening puck drop. Emery is a beast. Add in an experienced portal grab for injury insurance or if Benoit/Komzak hit the portal.
Goalie is the only real unknown. Hedquist showed that he can play at this level, but you still need someone to push him for playing time. Portal grab for a year until Heil is ready to come in the following year would be ideal.
The portal F and D have to be studs…a top 6 F and top 4 D. Otherwise might as well trust our own development. Get a high end tendy to compete with Hobie. Play both as well, we’ll be good again.
Im just hoping Blake stays. My hunch is he signs though

Boys were outshot 15-1 to start the third…spanning 12 minutes. Insane that’s how we hopped out of the locker room knowing we had one period left.

Noah Kosick to Michigan…really nice get. First 08 commit I believe. From BC.

You could say UND is in a drought as well. Doesn't mean we would be a Cinderella.
We are definitely in a bit of a drought right now.

My guesses?
Persson goes; go to portal for a clear one-year rental. My guess? Dom Basse (nee CC and SCSU).
Forwards out: Gaber, Ness, Johannes, Albrecht, Emerson, Monty. Six open slots. In come Croal, Swanson, Boisvert, Littler, then go to the portal for size and a faceoff guy.
Defense? I think the five eligible return and in come Strathmann, Jubenvill, and Emery.
That's a 15/8/3 26-man roster. If there's 27th slot this year I'd think it'd be an insurance one-year portal D.
Don’t go specifically for size…go get the best players available.

I'm excited for Swanson. Smaller kid that needs a good defensive center that can contribute offensively. No problem offensively, but if he's with a Blake they've got to have a center that's good low or the line will get bullied by heavy teams.
Me too. Omac will be fine. I really liked his progression from yr 1 to yr 2. He’s a stud.

I’d be a bit surprised to be honest. I feel like we would have heard if his plan has changed by now?
Kind of hopeful you’re right. I recently heard he’s coming in from a Twitter journalist, but that was the first time. I get worried when we bring in skilled players right away (that aren’t first rounders) as I worry they get in berrys doghouse too early and bolt.

It's a stretch to consider Malone or Hextall "role players" in their day. Then add in their leadership and toughness.
Kunz on this squad is top 6 amirite??
I’ve liked Kunz the past 5-6 weeks. He is not the issue.
I just looked, too three ushl point leaders…Swanson coming here obv, the other two are going to Mich and that isn’t including NTDP.

This program hasn't had a Malone or a Hextall since then. Don't even know if they make guys like that anymore. Put one of those two guys from 2011 on this team and there's zero chance they lose last night.
We have role players…albrecht, jammer, Johannes, Kunz, strinden, etc. I honestly don’t think that’s the issue.

@MafiaMan posted earlier the after the 2016 Natty Berry's post season record is 3-12 with 1 NCCA win. Again let that soak in. Then add in 3 missed NCAA appearances during that stretch.
Tough metrics to look at. Yesterday’s game was tough and that was a 50/50 game to begin with. But I wasn’t overly shocked when the puck dropped, we had them. In one and done games, sometimes those games happen.
But…those games seem to never go in our favor anymore. Since the natty, we’ve most likely been the lowest blue blood program out there. Other blue bloods have had the volatility as well (missed NCAAs, etc) but they’ve had far more success than us in the NCAAs. We seem to be good enough to slug out regular reason games…but flame out by the end of the season. It’s all cyclical I suppose, hopefully they start getting lucky.

Yet somehow its always us that gets paritied round 1. I wonder why that is. I could understand some 1st round losses but every year come on.....
This is what I’ve been locking into. At this point it isn’t dumb (bad) luck. We have 1 NCAA win since 2016. That’s insane (for a program like ours).

We’re a good program…but this is def not the same program that Hak left. Tough pill to swallow. Love this program…but it’s been tough sledding. T up the Twitter posting about Penrose wins, crazy forum posters, etc. Programs are judged by NCAA tourney performance and/or NHL players produced.
And the Goon Twitter post was just posted. I was waiting for that In all seriousness I am not in the axe berry camp…because I’m not sure who they’d even replace him with (and he seems like an awesome guy). But can completely understand why someone would want to assess the situation. Some of the kool aid drinkers are hilarious.

Just look at what Brad inherited and look what we've accomplished since. I can appreciate some NCHC titles, but I just don't those matter a ton. I'm not even expecting titles...too much puck luck in one-and-done format tourneys. What I want to see is having top-tier talent excited to play for our program. I want the national pundits to rave about UND like they used to. I want the fanbase to be excited out of their minds for two weeks with another pending trip to the Frozen Four even if it ends in tears. The Penrose is a slow burn that no one thinks about until you have the trophy.

I think that's what sucks so bad. We lost a winnable game. It would be different if they just couldn't hang, but that didn't seem to be the case.
Totally. Big10 takeover is coming hot and heavy.

I don't know if the better team won. The team that played hard after the first period won.
What’s crazy is I barely noticed Mcgorty brindly etc. Nazar popped in that one but didn’t notice him too much either. We just took another heartbreaking loss. Back to the drawing board.

20-0 when leading after 2…insane (but super predictable) way to go out. We are the new gophs. 90% scar tissue

If they decide to get another goalie from the portal get one that isn't a one-year rental.
I think we see Benoit and Komzak to the portal.
Komzak for sure

He looked slow. Like I don’t think he’s the fastest guy, but he just looked slower than he usually is.
Agreed, he’s a possession guy. For a tiny dude, he can hold onto pucks so well. Haven’t seen that guy for awhile.

1-5 in NCAA tournament games since 2016.
Love Bubs…but it’s probably fair to get the hot seat heated for next year. Boy I thought this might be the year they won a couple games. They weren’t beating a team like BC. But a FF trip would have been nice for recruiting etc
