  1. Scheel's Arena is not the REA

Before you say it, yes I understand UND is the host

My post was about fan conduct and didn't have anything to do with buildings or hosts.  The regional was an NCAA event, regardless of where it was held.  Sic suggested that the NCAA was waiting to pounce on UND as a direct result of fan conduct at NCAA events and would do anything within its rule making power to do so.

I merely pointed out that not only did the NCAA not make a peep about the '15 regional in Fargo -- which happened to have been hosted by UND and where nothing but Sioux could be seen or heard from floor to rafter -- they went ahead and rewarded Fargo and UND with another regional in two years' time.

There are only two possibilities:  (1) Sic is absolutely right and '17 is the biggest trap in NCAA history; or (2) the NCAA really doesn't intend to do a damn thing about Sioux-related fan conduct now that it is no longer UND's official nickname.  My money is on the latter.

  2. The NCAA Executive Committee (or whatever name it was recently given) was granted the power to make rules on the fly, as they see fit.

    That's a fact as well.

Oh, the Executive Committee doesn't like native names at their events and they have power to make rules to keep them away.

    That's also a fact.

Yes, but the NCAA just hosted a mens hockey regional in Fargo a few months ago.  And unless I'm mistaken they didn't so much as ask a "Sioux" fan to clear the aisle.

And then, inexplicably, the NCAA just awarded a 2017 regional to…can you believe this…Fargo.

So you'll have to excuse people for not running scared from the NCAA right now.

  3. REA has announced its first ever Green-Out for Friday night.  According to General Manager Jody Hodgson, "Our number one sellers at the Sioux Shop this week have been officially licensed plain, dark green shirts and pants. We're really excited about Friday's exhibition game, and we know that our leather-clad hockey fans are, too. I can't wait to see them pack the arena."

  4. WPG v. MIN would sell.

MAN v. IOWA ... not so much. There may be a better game on that same ice the next night ... ;)

And then you realize that you live in Fly Speck, USA -- the gazillionth largest media market in the country, and people who book events actually pay attention to these things, and entertainment opportunities will continue to pass you by.  This is Grand Forks' fate, some of which is self-imposed.  People need to turn out for stuff, period.

  5. I'm serious where has this been advertised?

It blew up on Twitter shortly after it was announced (right around when tix went on sale in early August).  If you were on Ticketmaster and searched GF or the Ralph, you would have seen it.  It got a brief mention on here (mis-classified in the UND Sports - Other forum, as I recall).  And it's been prominently featured at theralph.com.

But in light of the crappy ticket sales, I would agree with anyone who says that the REA has taken a dump on marketing.

  6. What happened to the shop in the concourse? I was on a mission to find something that I would actually wanna buy, but to no avail.

Too few sales.  High labor costs.  Owner got bored.  Alerus got greedy with the rent.  I don't know the answer, but take your pick.

  7. So ... you're thinking someone's going to make a Coaches Club level donation ($1350) and then sell the prime perk of that club level (parking) to you for less than 1/3 the price they paid.

In fairness to OP, there are probably lots of STH who end up pre-partying/dining/carpooling with their STH friends to games and have no (or diminished) need for individual parking.

  8. 19th edition of the Icebreaker, one of the "top showcase events" for the sport, and options for live media coverage are virtually nil.  So much for building the brand of college hockey.  Maybe they'll pull out some stops for the big 2-0 next year in Denver.

  9. Speaking of LJS' demise (in poking around, I see that the store in Sioux Falls closed last year), it is safe to say that the fast food game has permanently changed.  Yet among the new and rising stars in the quick-serve universe (pick your list, they're all over the internet), it doesn't seem that GF is on anyone's radar.  (Heck, we didn't even get a Panera until very recently, and they were old news.)  Same for casual restaurants.  Should we even hold out hope?
