  1. I hope so but this "professional marketing firm" thing just scares me

Pick a product you like, any product.  Look at it.  Look at its packaging, its design, its logo.  Look at its advertising.  99.9999% of all of that was created by professionals.  And whatever input the owner had, I'm pretty sure that was vetted by the pros as well.

Design is part art, part science, part process, part emotion, part listening, part understanding, part luck, part skill, part passion, and part ego.

It seems a little premature to write off UND on this one.  We can only hope the toxic atmosphere of the nickname debate doesn't scare away the best designers.

  2. Yes he did and I think he needs to do it again!!!

Can lightning strike twice?  Do you want to go to that well again?  Won't anything less than a home run taint the legacy and remove some of the luster and reverence?

I'm no art critic, but you'd be putting a lot of pressure on the guy.

  3. This guy did.  (same guy quoted in the Herald piece this morning)

    http://www.emblemetric.com/

Read about half-way down and he basically predicts this months ago.

Nice find…I hadn't come across his blog before.

This inexplicable avian affinity has quickly transformed from quirk to aberration to phenomenon to trend to provable fact.

I wonder if you could get anything close to even money odds if such things were open to gambling.

Are there no "safe" nicknames beyond birds?  What does this say about contemporary US society?

  4. Probably not, it makes too much sense to do something like this to appease the ruffled feathers.  Very much like the concept and effort put into this. A tweak here and there and you might actually have something "unique" in the world of bird nicknames.  The problem with concepts like these is that it tends to get hopes up, that will ultimately be dashed by the "people in charge".

Here's the great part…you'll have a chance to offer up your two cents about what makes sense.

The selected vendor will work with UND stakeholders to develop potential graphic identities.

  5. Reading some of the reactions on Twitter leads me to the following realization:

Anti-FH people with identifiable Twitter accounts are either (1) independently wealthy, (2) very, very secure in their employment and/or future employability, or (3) completely insane.

Having an opinion on a matter of public concern is one thing…expressing it with zero regard for how it will be perceived by those with less (i.e., no) zeal for the subject is another.

  6. I find it ridiculous that they have to supposedly "tabulate" the results from on online vote. They University should have had two press releases ready to go out with right away this morning. When votes and surveys are conducted online the results are immediate. All results are come in a value 1 or value 2 and are dumped into a database.  There is no tabulating that needs to be done. Waiting to make an announcement botches the process even more. I guess I didn't expect anything better though.

I'm guessing you open all your presents on Christmas Eve, too.  For a "botched" process, you sure are antsy about the outcome.  Relax.

  7. Attendance today was 6,996.  Biggest home game of the DI era, and nobody saw it.  Students were weak as usual.  So was the rest of the building.

No explanation for students, but the fact that this was opening weekend for GFYHA play couldn't have helped vis-a-vis area families.  Looked like there were games back-to-back-to-back at ICON all day.

  8. Hit Scotty's Deli (a/k/a Al's Lite) on South Washington for lunch today.  Some familiar menu items (for those of you who frequented Al's) including several sandwiches and wraps, and the service was good.  Seating felt sparse (nothing fancy about the furniture), and couldn't quite get over the 'Pita Pit/I've been here before' feeling, but overall a good experience.  Interesting tidbit...only bottled sodas, so if you are a frequent re-filler at the fountain, you'll need to pace yourself or pony up.

  9. I'm pretty sure that competition has nothing to do with their problem with the restaurant. I'm sure they are worried about visibility, about whether the restaurant will block the view of the Hornbachers store from 32nd. I haven't seen the plans so I have no way of knowing whether the concerns are valid or not, but it sounds like the restaurant is going to be built right out along 32nd like Pizza Hut and the pet store. Visibility for the casual shopper (and mall shoppers) is a big deal.

Run your business like a destination, and people will find their way there.  As for "casual" grocery shoppers?  "Hornbachers" enjoys zero brand recognition outside of FM, so I'm not sure they're going to draw folks in off the street on building signage alone.  That location kind of sucks for visibility anyway…stuff's built up all cattywampus on that lot.

  10. If you honestly believe that logo hasn't significantly affected this voting process,I have ocean front property in Nebraska to sell you.

With the melting polar ice caps and all, you never know.  Still seems more likely than thousands of UND students and alumni being as gullible as some think.

  11. UND should totally do a exhibition game, between the Club Team, and the School team at the very beginning of the season. Just something casual and laid back, like the Green and White scrimmage for football. More of a pep rally to kick off the year than anything else, but it would be fun and it would really promote the club team. Might be hard to get started, but if you do it for a few years it could be kind of fun.

Risk of injuries >>> fun quotient.

I'm surprised that the Manitoba games get as physical as they do, but the Bisons probably feel they have something to prove.

(For the record, I agree with you that it would be cool.)

  12. On www.umes.edu,  they are referred to as Fighting Hawks all over.

Not quarreling with you, but I find the opposite.  Which is very interesting, and confusing.

At http://www.umeshawks.com/genrel/mdes-genrel.html (a listing of 12+ years worth of press releases), the word "Fighting" appears once.

At http://www.umeshawks.com/ot/mdes-store.html (the online store), there are zero instances of "Fighting".  Same for the school bio on the athletics page (http://www.umeshawks.com/school-bio/mdes-school-bio.html) and media relations page (http://www.umeshawks.com/media-relations/mdes-media-relations.html).

Is this the ultimate identity crisis or what?

  13. Given what's out there in some social media I'd be interested to find even remotely informed voters. Many seem surprised any of this is happening.

Doesn't say much for UND and the caliber of the people it attracts (and educates).  :(  But it certainly does make it easy to shrug your shoulders and say that those folks deserve whatever is coming their way.
