Does an affiliate have to get dispensation from the Vatican to pre-empt Notre Dame football?

Only slightly off topic, but I saw Black Mass last night, and it would be an excellent way to decompress after a long day watching football. Great movie!

College Gameday with several laughs at UND's expense this morning for not having a nickname. Also made fun of Nodaks.
I don't watch these guys as much as I have in the past, but that segment was poorly thought out and the execution was even worse. Either take on the NA nickname issue head-on (like journalists), spend some time on the nickname process (could be an interesting story, especially for fans who can't fathom their own school having to do so), or leave it alone. Half-assed ad libbing and sorry attempts at humor - at the expense of an FCS team with virtually no national footprint -
areshould be beneath ESPN.- 1

No, I'm not the author of "How To Ruin Your Shoo-In Election As Governor Without Even Getting Out of Bed". Sorry.
FYP with the unabridged title of that masterpiece.

Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. On the other hand, the logo possibilities are endless.

Yah I was lazy on the details ...
+ 1 for the most brutally honest statement on this topic, ever.
Now, if only some of the more outspoken posters here would take a moment and reflect on the importance of details. (Graduates of the Marlan Haakenson School of Law, Good Sense, and DecorumSM are excused.)

Well it appears the Forum will leave no rock unturned in order to stir the waters - you would think a large media conglomerate would have a better understanding of copyright and registration laws. The headline is so misleading - UND would not need an advertising agencies "permission" to use Sundog as a university athletic program logo. This is just low-brow journalism.
Sorry to nit-pick, but the fact that you refer to "copyright" is the very reason why the public needs to be spoon-fed. Names aren't copyrightable; this is the domain of trademark law. And while every user of a non-original, non-unique trademark may run the risk of infringing another's rights, permission is never required. At the same time, you should read that story as a juxtaposition against the nonsense coming out of Bismarck on Monday, not as a law school lesson.

Finally, a voice of reason. THIS is how rational, sane and informed business owners (and citizens) behave. No hijinks, no threats, no subtle demands, only the healthy realization that they may own a "trademark" but they don't own the English language. The smart ones even recognize the potential for a huge UP-side. Some of you should take note...

My point: What's to stop the next guy from trademarking and/or tradename the names for his college basement athletic teams consisting of air hockey and Foosball. That he also wants to sell shirts for online. Then someone takes UND to court for using North Dakota Fighting Hawks when UND with its infinite wisdom could have avoided the whole mess.
How?
Registered a trade name it doesn't need? (Hint: UND is going to continue to be known and do business as the "University of North Dakota.")
Registered a trademark it isn't using? (Hint: All UND has is a list of five potential candidates for adoption and no present intent to use any of them, even though it might intend to use one of them.)
Please enlighten the masses, oh sage one. We're dying to hear your proposed solutions.

Facepalm to this administration if they didn't already register the five remaining options for "athletic sports teams."
Which I have a feeling they haven't.....*facepalm.*
Because if they did, it would have been reported.
You may be missing the point. It's a little hard to "register" that which you are not using. Yet, this yahoo goes and files papers with the state claiming to be engaging in the real estate business under all three names, admittedly for the sole purpose of sabotaging the University's nickname process. Kind of makes one wonder whether the whole thing is a sham but who knows, maybe he really is branching out with three new start-ups and wants to compete with himself in the marketplace.
Last I checked, filing bogus papers with the government was somewhat frowned upon.

I'd hope with all the money, time, and effort und has put into the process this guy couldn't just come and screw it all up!
No, but UND's closet dream of opening up a personal real estate agency in North Dakota just took a massive hit.

Haakenson said he registered the trade names in an attempt to interfere with the nickname selection process, though a UND official said such an attempt was unlikely to succeed.
In Haakenson's case, all three trade names are registered as "Real Estate - Personal."
Haakenson expressed confidence in his effort and said he sees his effort as ultimately working to return UND to the Fighting Sioux.
"I will predict that sometime in the future, maybe long after I'm dead and gone, the name will come back," he said.

Sounds like the Alerus Center has added fireworks (pyrotechnics) for football games.
It should be a nice addition. Every time UND scores ....
Seemed forced, poorly thought out, and altogether kind of hacky. Too much borrowing from REA, and too little originality, methinks.

Is it even possible for Verizon's signal at the Alerus to have gotten worse? Ugh.

Perfect time to re-visit the Wyoming Prediction thread. Almost cringeworthy.

How is this even "news"? As I recall...

Finally made it over to Grand Junction Subs on 42nd -- definitely a worthwhile addition.
I suspect they're still working out some of the kinks, and the grill minders appear to be learning the process…service was slow and chaotic at times. But it was the height of the lunch rush. There appeared to be plenty of seating, and prices weren't too bad. All in all, a good value for the money paid.
Give 'em a try if you haven't already.

Off-topic...holy crap, FS4Life. That signature! When you post 8 times on a single page, my mouse needs a re-charge just to get to the bottom.
No offense, but thank God for the "hide signature" feature.

Lol well, just get Stenehjem to strike a sweet deal with the ncaa to get permission from the two nearest Hmong tribes.
That would be a Hmongous task.

At this point, all bison73 has done is to make Rob Port look like a genius by comparison. At least SAB cites sources, posts documents, and tries to spin anti-UND venom into something reasonably coherent.
"UND doesn't pay its bills. [sticks thumbs in ears] I win!"
