  1. Watch this one, seems like Ben was way under paid and he looks like he regrets it.

All artists are underpaid the first time...authors, actors, songwriters, musicians, playwrights.  Heck, some of the most celebrated painters and sculptors of all time didn't see a dime during their lifetimes.  And it doesn't matter whether they break out with a blockbuster, a best-seller, or a number one hit, because the deal is always negotiated at the front end when there is no leverage and bargaining power is nil.  Life ain't fair, but the creative arts are a downright swindle.

  2. I would love to not see the doofy looking laser light blob skaters.  Looks tacky and outdated.

I agree, but that is not necessarily a popular opinion around here.  It came up a while back and, well...

Did someone just complain that the laser in the press box is too boring?

Think about that statement for a bit.  Talk about privileged fans who look to complain about anything.

  3. So Padron's is now open at the site of the former Sweeto Burrito.  Not much has changed on the inside, and the menu seems to be equally familiar.  Replaced some of Sweeto's items with an assortment of burgers.  Burrito was okay (portions seemed smaller), but I have a hard time believing that the same concept will play for these guys when it bombed so miserably for their predecessors.  Bring in a Chipotle or even a Panchero's, and I think it will do better.

  4. For political positions, I think it's actually undemocratic to serve in office without pay. It becomes a deal where those who can't afford to make the political statement as hurt, making the process even more narrow.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-dollar_salary

Lots of famous, non-elected folks on this list.  But that's the entire point…some leaders set out to make a statement, some like to make a mint.  (See what I did there?)  :)

  5. I can't think of an example of a "celebrity" taking a lot less money when moving into a leadership role with responsibility.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_career_of_Arnold_Schwarzenegger

Schwarzenegger also called the state legislature into a special session and said that spending cuts would also be necessary. He initiated the cuts by agreeing to serve as governor with no salary, a saving of $175,000 (USD) per year.

  6. For all of his political savvy, I'm surprised that Schafer would so soon take an anti-establishment stand on a higher ed issue that was trounced not once but twice in Bismarck in the past few sessions.  Heck, I hope he can pull it off, but it would take a miracle in the House.

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/education/3895892-schafer-nd-should-look-keeping-und-president-applicants-names-public-view

The Senate passed a bill in 2009, but it failed in the House. A broader bill that also would have shielded the names of applicants – except for the three finalists – for college vice presidents, chancellors and vice chancellors and other top education positions died in the House on a 12-78 vote in January.

  7. Where exactly does the article state that he demanded that salary? Maybe your ire should be directed to the Board for wasting mmoney by offering too much to an interim...

Reading comprehension may not be your strong suit.  Who said anything about demanding?  All we know is what he took.  And it stands to reason that he could have taken less.  No ire there; I begrudge no one the opportunity to make money.

If I remember correctly, everybody wet their pants when this guy was hired because he was the home-grown, affable, friend to all.  What he lacked in academic credentials he more than made up for in character and integrity.  He would bridge the gap, and heal the divide.  Walk on water.  All that stuff.  Now if he doesn't move mountains, he'll just be another overpaid "educrat", hired without broad faculty support, and earning some $200k for what, six months of cutting ribbons?

A lot of household names, a-listers, celebrities, token hires, and others who don't need the money voluntarily choose to draw a salary below market (sometimes well below) when they take an honorary or leadership position.  I thought that might have been the noble gesture here.

  8. So he's basically getting paid the same as Kelly? What an outrage.:silly:

Before you jump all over me saying it's more than Kelly gets. Kelly's base salary is $350,216 PLUS benefits (pension,insurance,etc.). Which added together probably comes in at more than $33,000 a month.

It's a generous package for an interim 'chair-warming' gig, at a school facing a budget shortfall, in a state facing badly-missed revenue projections.

I think what this amounts to is conditioning for the fact that the next president will be paid considerably more than Kelley has been, and we all know how popular the NDUS leadership has been in certain circles around the state.

  9. Taking a big salary is a <insert feminine hygiene product of choice here> move.  More power to him, of course, but he also had the power to take much less.

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/3895700-ed-schafer-signs-almost-six-months-und

Ed Schafer will make $33,216 monthly...

    Lest we forget...

    Although he has personal wealth...

  10. ...I agree 100% that those that have not been involved can't possibly understand

...just imagine what out of State "professionals " that for $$$ only will present

Insularity, arrogance, self-importance.  North Dakota in a nutshell.

God forbid UND look for the best and most qualified, or even dare to look outside of Grand Forks.  Because, hey, we just got rid of a head logo, in profile, looking left, with colored feathers, and that one worked well enough for us.  So, instead of opening our minds to new ideas, let's just hunker down and do the same, exact thing...in bird form.

  11. I'll agree with jdub: It's still a little busy. OK, a lot busy. :D

This observation (and the litany of nitpicking that precedes it) is but one reason why you need to consider handing this off to a professional designer who has no connection to UND.  Ben Brien, a current student, a "local artist," a siouxsports.com poster with 6,838 posts…with all due respect, none of these people have sufficient objectivity or a broad-enough world view, and will likely try too hard and their work will suffer for it.

  12. Sometimes, things just don't work out despite some awesome intentions and well thought planning.  And it's hardly anybody's fault.

Like all businesses (I'm thinking of you, Places to Eat in GF thread), technology enterprises come and go.  Isn't the EERC, for example, notwithstanding its troubles of late, really more of an exception than the rule?  And didn't Lesko, er, Dorgan hand out lots of government cash to a lot of different ventures over the years?  Where's the accountability there?  And there are no guarantees when the government invests money…you could build a $5M hangar or a $10M runway at the AFB, and still have the bombers pulled out the very next day.

Leadership comes in different forms…prudence is knowing when to pull the plug or abandon ship (rather than merely throwing more money at the problem).

Not taking a side on this one, but isn't there always more to the story?

  13.

I wonder what her opinion is of the Vietnam Memorial being designed by a student? It's a basically perfect design done by an "amateur".

I ready Jenny's letter as "I know more than you. And the general public doesn't know what a good logo looks like. Only the experts."

If it's a public contract, can't anyone submit a bid?

That should level the playing field a bit for amateurs and non-experts.

Still beats a free-for-all or a (shudder) "contest."

  14.

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3885424-update-und-nickname-fighting-hawks-kelley-reveals-his-vote

"a group of stakeholders will help select the design firm while another group will work with the firm to create the logo"

So it looks like there will be at least a little input from people other than the logo design firm.  Important thing is to get the right people on the committee.  Who those are, I guess that is up for debate.

I'm prepared to dismiss the public input as token.  The designer(s) will take in all of the input, naturally, but at the end of the day will practice their craft the way they want to.  Otherwise, you end up with a hot mess.

  15. But don't you think the design process she describes too closely resembles the process that led to our nickname being Fighting Hawks?

No, because the ship's rudder will be firmly in the hands of professionals, not a committee.  Public opinion will be sought, received, and weighed, but UNLIKE our volunteer friends and neighbors on the committee who had families and feelings, and -- let's face it -- who were between a rock and a hard place, the decision makers will be nearly impervious.  If they're really good, they will immediately dismiss wayward input but will absolutely leave you with a smile and a handshake, feeling like you had a say.  Such is the beauty of bringing in the outsiders.

  16. Last night a buddy of mine who played golf for the gophers and his brother who played hockey for the gophers told me "UND went from the best name and mascot in maybe all of college sports to the worst". I don't know if I was proud that they admitted that Sioux was the best nickname or I was pissed that we're no longer the Sioux. The only thing I know is that I don't have enough pride in the Hawks name yet to defend it. I want to move on but my heart isn't in it yet.

They are certainly entitled to their opinions about the name, but what really impresses me is that the U of M has incorporated prescience into its student-athlete mentoring programs.
