  1. Can anyone honestly say that knowing ahead of time that there could be a third candidate in the event of a statistical dead heat between 2nd and 3rd place would have changed their vote or changed their view of the process?

If not, please give it a rest about "rules" and "integrity".  You sound ridiculous.

  2. Just a quick question as a first year nchc tv subscriber. I have my laptop hooked up to my tv. I watched the bemidji game on demand sunday. It's runs smooth and picture looks great but noticed when the centre ice cam is zoomed out the picture looks like it's stuttering almost like the picture is skipping some frames. Is this normal or is this likely something to do with my computer. My internet download rate is around 50 Mbps

Everybody's set up is going to be different (ISP, modem, router, laptop, cabling, TV, etc.), but I tried connecting my computer to my new-ish Samsung TV once last season and it was okay by 1980s standards but utterly unwatchable by today's HDTV standards.  I think the larger screen just amplifies the unavoidable imperfections in the feed.  We huddle around the laptop for NCHC webcasts.

It's frustrating because the TV can stream wireless HD Netflix flawlessly.  Maybe if the TV's browser could handle NCHC.tv, that would be an improvement.

Does anybody know if the system requirements for NCHC have expanded to include built-in TV browsers?  As of last year, Samsung smart TV's were not compatible.

  3. Clearly any nickname that's picked will not have the leverage that Sioux had.

So do you think Nodakclothing.com will have a bigger market share of Nodak Apparel sold than UND athletics if Nodaks is chosen? Will people immediately associate the clothing with their brand? I doubt it since most people aren't even aware it exists.

Again, obviously they won't be 1st with any nickname like they were with the Sioux.  I think we're on the same page? Sort of?

Not a bigger market share, necessarily, but name exclusivity is basically out the window and UND will have to tolerate a lot more unlicensed merchandise in the marketplace than anyone has seen in the past.  It will need to be the logo and not the name that creates consumer demand in order to generate big revenue.

It's kind of like a tourist t-shirt sold in the visitor's center along the highway…it may say "North Dakota" and it may be bought and worn by a UND fan but it's unlikely that the school is getting any of the action.  That's life for a university named after the state (or even a pro team and its home city).  Mix in some third-parties being able to freely sell t-shirts with the team's nickname, however, and that can affect the bottom line.  The more generic the name, the less control any one party has.  It's built-in competition that frankly didn't exist with Sioux (Sioux Forever shirts sold at Play It Again Sports being an obvious exception).  The plain block-letter "SIOUX" tees and sweatshirts you saw at the bookstore and at Scheels were licensed and there were few, if any, substitutes.

  4. Agreed about what you said about a very clear and specific logo.

I never said that the Sioux doesn't think about licensing revenues so not sure where the 2nd paragraph was referring to.

It's all about the control.  UND had broad leverage in the marketplace with Sioux (an 80+ year brand does that for you).  UND is merely next in line with whatever name it ends up with.

Let that sink in…nodakclothing.com has the upper hand on "Nodak" because it got there first.  It's like if "Former Mayor" Haakenson were actually making and selling something rather than being a curmudgeon.

  5. I don't follow, didn't see much to read in the link.

It's a clothing company that happens to be name Nodak so... that's what our logo will be?

    Sorry, not making the connection.

Not the logo, the presentation.  The lack of imagination.  The fact that UND will have to be dealing with (competing with???) this kind of dreck…FOREVER.

Kind of like naming your new fast food restaurant McDowell's.

  6. If Rough Riders is chosen, UND could just use this press release as a template.  Change Texas to North Dakota, and change names like Frisco, Plano, and McKinney to Dickinson, Medora, and Grassy Butte.  Change the baseball references to hockey references, and we should be good to go.

Kind of sobering to stop and think about the amount of work that needs to go into branding, let alone when you're the new kid on the block and your name isn't quite unique.

This one took seven months...for an established franchise.

"Our development process began last July when they met in Frisco with fans, staff and community members to learn about the stories, history and personality of Teddy Roosevelt, the RoughRiders and the Metroplex. This is a fresh look that our fans will rally behind and it is the product of a terrific collaboration."

  7. Bump.

True, it's an old thread, but a newly hot topic.

My answer is 90% the same -- the whole point of the site is to be associated with UND athletics, so if that's not Sioux anymore, then the name needs to change. However, my timeline has changed just a little since these year-old posts... a more recent response. We're still in no hurry, but if UND is really going to hold out for 4 years, I can't imagine staying SiouxSports.com that long.

Damn near made it those 4 years, too.  :)

Have any domain names been 'provisionally' locked down yet?

This announcement may well be the least controversial and most anticipated nickname-related development around here in a long time.  Maybe we can even rally around it.

  8. Like I said. anyone who has taken a freshmen marketing class would have handled this better than President Kelley. The fact that there wasn't potential logos and branding and marketing plans when it got down to 10-12 names as absolutely backwards.

    I'll bite.

What good are "potential logos and branding and marketing plans"?  With the nickname crazies among us, they hardly remember exactly what you told them a week ago.  Do you think anyone would remember they had been told that the logo they fell in love with was "potential"?  What happens when the adopted logo differs in some way…anarchy?  What if a 'bad' preliminary design were hastily put together for a 'good' name, and it got trounced?

What about cost.  "Logos and branding and marketing plans" cost money.  With what has been spent already, if you went forward and spent $5-10k per name when you knew that 9-11 of them were going to go straight into the trash, people would have lost their $hit.

You can certainly disagree, but what you cannot do is say that setting apart nickname and logo selection was wrong or even necessarily bad in all respects.  Why not have some time for thoughtful reflection and cooling off?  Rather than spend $100k on logos you weren't going to use anyway, you can spend more on a quality logo for the name you have.  Then, when the logo launch rolls around, hopefully some of the nickname rifts have healed.

  9. I'm guessing the folks at the Ralph are pulling for Nodaks.  Anyone know for sure?

Definitely not.  The harmonic vibrations of visiting fans constantly mocking UND for its nickname choice would compromise the structural integrity of the building.

Besides, the influx of "No-Dicks" would render hundreds of urinals useless and require substantial renovations to provide for additional women's rest rooms.

(Getting harder to tell where the sarcasm starts and stops.)

  10. Why do some of you seem to think if Nodaks wins that "Fighting" could be added to it?  I would think that the name would have to stay the same as it was stated on the ballot...Otherwise the integrity of the vote process would be questioned. (As if it isn't already)

Because that's how it works. Unlike some of the constant complainers on here, nicknames evolve.

The recipe for adding an adjective to the root noun is simple:  the fans use it, the media adopts it, the PA announcers sprinkle it in, and before you know it, coaches and players find themselves using it.  A few shirt designs later, you are the de facto Adjective Nouns.  No vote needed.

(Oh, by the way, it's happened before.)

  12. Sounds like maybe pass interference but not called, ISU ball.....game over.  Sounds like a bad call.

If there was contact, I think it actually helped get the receiver close to the ball.  His falling to the turf towards the ball is the only thing that made it as close as it looked.  No contact and he was way out of position to make the catch.

  13. Make some defensive adjustments at halftime, and hang on to the ball, and let's get this one in the books.

One of of these kids is doing his own thing, come on, can you tell me which one...

Since you brought it up...Bison losing at home to UNI, 14-10 H.  That might explain the pained look on his face.
