  1. I'll agree with jdub: It's still a little busy. OK, a lot busy. :D

This observation (and the litany of nitpicking that precedes it) is but one reason why you need to consider handing this off to a professional designer who has no connection to UND.  Ben Brien, a current student, a "local artist," a siouxsports.com poster with 6,838 posts…with all due respect, none of these people have sufficient objectivity or a broad-enough world view, and will likely try too hard and their work will suffer for it.

  2. Sometimes, things just don't work out despite some awesome intentions and well thought planning.  And it's hardly anybody's fault.

Like all businesses (I'm thinking of you, Places to Eat in GF thread), technology enterprises come and go.  Isn't the EERC, for example, notwithstanding its troubles of late, really more of an exception than the rule?  And didn't Lesko, er, Dorgan hand out lots of government cash to a lot of different ventures over the years?  Where's the accountability there?  And there are no guarantees when the government invests money…you could build a $5M hangar or a $10M runway at the AFB, and still have the bombers pulled out the very next day.

Leadership comes in different forms…prudence is knowing when to pull the plug or abandon ship (rather than merely throwing more money at the problem).

Not taking a side on this one, but isn't there always more to the story?

  3.

I wonder what her opinion is of the Vietnam Memorial being designed by a student? It's a basically perfect design done by an "amateur".

I ready Jenny's letter as "I know more than you. And the general public doesn't know what a good logo looks like. Only the experts."

If it's a public contract, can't anyone submit a bid?

That should level the playing field a bit for amateurs and non-experts.

Still beats a free-for-all or a (shudder) "contest."

    http://www.grandforksherald.com/news/local/3885424-update-und-nickname-fighting-hawks-kelley-reveals-his-vote

"a group of stakeholders will help select the design firm while another group will work with the firm to create the logo"

So it looks like there will be at least a little input from people other than the logo design firm.  Important thing is to get the right people on the committee.  Who those are, I guess that is up for debate.

I'm prepared to dismiss the public input as token.  The designer(s) will take in all of the input, naturally, but at the end of the day will practice their craft the way they want to.  Otherwise, you end up with a hot mess.

  5. But don't you think the design process she describes too closely resembles the process that led to our nickname being Fighting Hawks?

No, because the ship's rudder will be firmly in the hands of professionals, not a committee.  Public opinion will be sought, received, and weighed, but UNLIKE our volunteer friends and neighbors on the committee who had families and feelings, and -- let's face it -- who were between a rock and a hard place, the decision makers will be nearly impervious.  If they're really good, they will immediately dismiss wayward input but will absolutely leave you with a smile and a handshake, feeling like you had a say.  Such is the beauty of bringing in the outsiders.

  6. Last night a buddy of mine who played golf for the gophers and his brother who played hockey for the gophers told me "UND went from the best name and mascot in maybe all of college sports to the worst". I don't know if I was proud that they admitted that Sioux was the best nickname or I was pissed that we're no longer the Sioux. The only thing I know is that I don't have enough pride in the Hawks name yet to defend it. I want to move on but my heart isn't in it yet.

They are certainly entitled to their opinions about the name, but what really impresses me is that the U of M has incorporated prescience into its student-athlete mentoring programs.

  7. I hope so but this "professional marketing firm" thing just scares me

Pick a product you like, any product.  Look at it.  Look at its packaging, its design, its logo.  Look at its advertising.  99.9999% of all of that was created by professionals.  And whatever input the owner had, I'm pretty sure that was vetted by the pros as well.

Design is part art, part science, part process, part emotion, part listening, part understanding, part luck, part skill, part passion, and part ego.

It seems a little premature to write off UND on this one.  We can only hope the toxic atmosphere of the nickname debate doesn't scare away the best designers.

  8. Yes he did and I think he needs to do it again!!!

Can lightning strike twice?  Do you want to go to that well again?  Won't anything less than a home run taint the legacy and remove some of the luster and reverence?

I'm no art critic, but you'd be putting a lot of pressure on the guy.

  9. This guy did.  (same guy quoted in the Herald piece this morning)

    http://www.emblemetric.com/

Read about half-way down and he basically predicts this months ago.

Nice find…I hadn't come across his blog before.

This inexplicable avian affinity has quickly transformed from quirk to aberration to phenomenon to trend to provable fact.

I wonder if you could get anything close to even money odds if such things were open to gambling.

Are there no "safe" nicknames beyond birds?  What does this say about contemporary US society?

  10. Probably not, it makes too much sense to do something like this to appease the ruffled feathers.  Very much like the concept and effort put into this. A tweak here and there and you might actually have something "unique" in the world of bird nicknames.  The problem with concepts like these is that it tends to get hopes up, that will ultimately be dashed by the "people in charge".

Here's the great part…you'll have a chance to offer up your two cents about what makes sense.

The selected vendor will work with UND stakeholders to develop potential graphic identities.

  11. Reading some of the reactions on Twitter leads me to the following realization:

Anti-FH people with identifiable Twitter accounts are either (1) independently wealthy, (2) very, very secure in their employment and/or future employability, or (3) completely insane.

Having an opinion on a matter of public concern is one thing…expressing it with zero regard for how it will be perceived by those with less (i.e., no) zeal for the subject is another.

  12. I find it ridiculous that they have to supposedly "tabulate" the results from on online vote. They University should have had two press releases ready to go out with right away this morning. When votes and surveys are conducted online the results are immediate. All results are come in a value 1 or value 2 and are dumped into a database.  There is no tabulating that needs to be done. Waiting to make an announcement botches the process even more. I guess I didn't expect anything better though.

I'm guessing you open all your presents on Christmas Eve, too.  For a "botched" process, you sure are antsy about the outcome.  Relax.

  13. Attendance today was 6,996.  Biggest home game of the DI era, and nobody saw it.  Students were weak as usual.  So was the rest of the building.

No explanation for students, but the fact that this was opening weekend for GFYHA play couldn't have helped vis-a-vis area families.  Looked like there were games back-to-back-to-back at ICON all day.

  14. Hit Scotty's Deli (a/k/a Al's Lite) on South Washington for lunch today.  Some familiar menu items (for those of you who frequented Al's) including several sandwiches and wraps, and the service was good.  Seating felt sparse (nothing fancy about the furniture), and couldn't quite get over the 'Pita Pit/I've been here before' feeling, but overall a good experience.  Interesting tidbit...only bottled sodas, so if you are a frequent re-filler at the fountain, you'll need to pace yourself or pony up.
