  1. This is 1 reason why i was not in favor of Berry giving an extension in the middle of the year.

    After the extension.

    1. Have up 3rd period lead to Omaha to basically tie them.  OT 3x3 win gave them 1/2 a Penne Rose cup and he was satisfied.

    2. Next night sit the goaltender that was playing great the last month and get beat by 3 goals allowing Denver to share the cup and get the number #1.  Also hurt pairwise ranking.

    3.  Next 2 games Sanderson is back and struggle to beat CC in two 2-1 games.  Sanderson played great, but still struggled to beat the 7th best team in the league.

    4.  Lose to W. Michigan in front of Pro UND crowd.

    5. Lost to Notre Dame and season done.

Basically finished 2-3-1 after the contract extension with the 2 wins vs CC, the 2nd worst team in the NCHC.  The loses vs 3 worst in NCHC, 3rd place team in NCHC and 3 best in Big Ten.  All teams they should have beat.

    This team quit.

  2. I don't get this crap about this team over performed.  Sure they had a lot of turnover, but they brought in plenty of transfers, so its not like the were all freshmen.  They were a 1st place team to start the new year so it not like they just came on in the 2nd half.  They had 2 bad weekends in January, and they sh!t the bed in the playoffs.

This program should never be in a position the be rebuilding, they should reload every year.  Having to rebuild is a black mark on Berry.

I would like to think they would have made a run in 2020, but after the last 2 years i'm more and more convinced they would have been 1 and done or maybe won a game.

Been tired all season of hearing from a ‘certain’ fan base how young they are!

Per CHN- 21/22 # of underclassmen (Fr/So) on roster of each tourney team.

    SCSU- 8      QU- 10     MN- 11       Irish- 11
    UMD- 11      AIC- 12    MSU- 12     MTU- 13
    UMass- 13  UML- 13  Harvard- 15   NE- 15    MI- 15       Sioux- 16     DU- 17      WM- 19

I was surprised by the number of W. Michigan Underclassmen.  I went and counted there roster and they have 31 players on the roster, so they have a bunch of upperclassmen also.  That is a lot of healthy scratches.

Was looking for alternatives to ESPNU to watch the games; turns out ESPN3 (streaming) is carrying the games as well.  So hopefully won’t have to worry about some stupid lacrosse game going into triple OT.

I think that is the good thing about ESPN3 is they can show the games right away as they can show as many games at one time on ESPN3 since it is streaming.

The NCAA basketball tournament showed us the excitement and heartbreak of the one-and-done format in the NCAA Tournament.

I just wonder if hockey was played in the same fashion as NCAA baseball with best two-of-three regionals/super regionals would UND have a few banners hanging in the Ralph. No way som  of these talked-about teams like 2003-04, 2010-11, 1998-99 lose two of out three.

It won't happen since best-of-three series cost money and money is something the NCAA doesn't like to spend on niche sports with low profile on the national sports scene.

    My two cents

In fairness i'm not sure UND wins the NC in 1997 or 2000 if it was best 2 out of 3.  My guess is the number of banners would be similar.

Here's a weird topic - what's the worst UND team that did win a national title?  Would have to be 1997, right?  I guess I don't know much about the 1959 and 1963 teams, though.

Very Weird Topic.  For me it is 2000.  1997 Lucked out with Michigan losing but that Sophomore class was loaded, and a very good team.  Interesting that IMO the 1998 and 1999 teams were the best in the country, but didn't win the NC and the teams before and after them did.  2 NC in four year is what the Program deserved.

As we gear up for the NCAA Tournament I'm thinking back to some of the great UND teams that never did reach the pinnacle. I apologize if this has been kicked around before, but I was curious to get others' feedback on some of the great UND teams that didn't win the title.

As we know you sometimes need some good fortune to win a title. I think of the 1997 team not having to face Michigan in the title that year as an example. Or the 1999-2000 team that faced Niagara instead of New Hampshire in the region final in Minneapolis.

But there is always some misfortune that goes along way. Like the 1997-98 team that had Karl Goehring sidelined and the tough task of facing Michigan on its home ice in the West Regional. Or, the 2003-04 team that couldn't get a goal over Denver in the West Regional in Colorado Springs.

    But I digress.

Here is my top four UND teams not to win a title (in no particular order).

1998-99: Didn't lose more than a handful of games. Perhaps ran out of steam in the final few weeks. Lost to BC in the regional, 3-1 in Madison (That team was loaded: Jason Blake, Jay Panzer, Jeff Panzer, Lee Goren, Brad Williamson, Mike Commordore, Karl Goehring  and had great depth in Ulmer, DeFauw, Armburst to name a few.

2000-01: A year after winning in 2000. The cupboard wasn't completely bare. Had Jeff Panzer, Ryan Bayda, David Hale, Travis Roche, Bryan Lundbohm and Karl Goehring. Didn't have the scoring depth as other Blais' teams, but were entertaining. Rallied to force OT vs. BC in the title game. Had some great scoring chances early (I believe Lundbohm had a breakaway) in the first.

2003-04: Zach Parise's 2nd year. Brandon Bochenski. Of the games lost that year, not many were my more than one goal.

2010-11: The Pony Express. Chay Genoway. Danny Kristo. Had to face Denver in back-to-back weekends to get to the Frozen Four in St. Paul. Could play fast, could play heavy. Outshot and mostly outplayed Michigan in the semifinals, but couldn't score. Ran into another hot goalie.

Honorable Mention: 2006-07: The DOT line. Rallied from a miserable start against Michigan in the region semifinal. Defeated rival Minnesota a week after the Blake Wheeler game. Had a second period lead over BC in the semifinals, but couldn't close it out.

Agree with 3 out of the 4.  Don't think the 2000-01 belongs in there.

I would put the 2019-20 in the top 4 along with the other 3 your have.  #5 would be the 1997-98 team.  I would guess the 1979 team would be up there but i was 4 at the time so don't remember.

UMD fan in front of me last night is no doubt shocked right now that her Bulldogs are not a #1 seed.  Oh, she’s likely disappointed as well that 4 other NCHC teams are in the tournament along with Duluth as she was certain it was just going to be her boys and Denver in there.

Some people are so clueless.  The UMD group behind me at the championship game was talking about how W. Michigan had to win the tourney to get into the NCAA Tournament.  I'm sure they are surprised to see Western as the highest seed out from the NCHC.

However many public high schools are in Minneapolis. Pretty much all of them attend Washburn or SW, though, which are both in affluent areas of the city.

Looks like there are 7 schools, but like you said almost all the the kids come from 2 schools.  I get that they will would probably never compete at the AA level, but there are tons of programs in the same boat.  I'm not sure why they are the exception.

  10. Transfer Portal sucks.  Seems to force coaches to kiss the players A$$.  Don't know what is going on behind closed doors.  Wish there was some compensation the team getting the player had to give.  Sucks when a coaching staff finds the diamonds in the rough, coaches them up and they leave.  Loyalty seems to be gone.

SCSU is getting the home series based on what tiebreaker?
    Fewer regulation losses?

UMD has more RW+OW but not the home ice?

Pretty sure it is head to head.  SCSU won in Regulation and SO.  Duluth won in SO and OT.

Conference titles are a big deal in the NCHC.  They show who the truly best team is over the long haul of a grueling season.  We should be very proud of our NCHC league titles.

Agree, but National Championships are a bigger deal.  I will even go further and say if one NCHC wins a NC and the other wins the Conference championship the team that won the Conference Championship is the better team.  I just want a coach that can also get it done the in NCAA tourney.  Its been too long since they have been to the Frozen Four.  Hope this is the year.

Is there another person that you believe would do a better job coaching ?

No true way of knowing.  Who are the options?

Do you believe there is no other coach better than him?

To be clear I don’t want him fired, I just think wait til the season is done.

These must be difficult times for you.

Why would you say that?  I just think he needs to do better in NCAA tournament.  Hopefully he does this year and contract is will deserved.  Either way my life doesn’t change

You mean because the team lost more talent in the off season than any other in the country and they were picked in the middle of the pack in the NCHC?

TBH I'm so sick of hearing this.  Its not like he just took the program over and everyone was leaving.  Maybe he needed to do a better job of balancing the classes out.  Weatherby leaving at the last minute hurt.  I have him credit for bringing in Driscoll, Calder and  Ford to have some older players.

It not like when he had 8 Seniors last year people were saying he's not that great of a coach because he has 8 seniors.

You need to win with who you got and that is on the head coach.

And no I don't think he should be fired, I just think they should have have waited until he end of the season and see how things play out.  He was under contract for over another year.

And if he doesn't? Say we get to a national title game or a Frozen Four and get beat by a team on a spectacular goalie performance ala 2012? Is that an indication he didn't deserve an extension? Rationally, it shouldn't.

He got an extension due to his body of work. This includes looking at past performance, our current team, and future pipeline/strength of the program/money/culture. Bubbs deserved it and got it. Any bellyaching that he shouldn't get one is wasted breath.

IMO.  Get to the frozen four get an extension.

Yes, no one here cares about them.  Not one bit.

I do because I always thought it took more than luck to win one.  I thought a great coach got his team to peak at the right time.  I thought we needed the right players to get it done.  Turns out all we needed was just Luck.

Yes I get it the best team does not always win, but the expectations needs to be greater than 1 NCAA win since 2016.  That can't be acceptable at UND.  He has a chance to change that this year and I sure hope he does.

Fixed it for you.  Can't judge a hockey coach based off a one and done tourney.

Of course you can.  At UND we brag about the 8 National Championship not the conference championships.  Need to get it done in the NCAA tourney.
