  1. While that sounds good and noble, I'm not so sure it is true. Try this thought experiment: Everyone on the Sioux football team is swapped tomorrow with everyone on NDSU's football team. Do you then cheer for NDSU? I don't think so. How about hockey? If everyone on the hockey team were swapped tomorrow with the players from Minnesota, who do you cheer for? I'm guessing it is still UND.

There is a strange connection sports fans have with their teams, and do not kid yourself, it has as much or more to do with the jersey and the organization it represents as the athletes wearing the uniform.

I agree, looking and feeling good positively translates to your performance. Cool jerseys btw.

  2. The Sioux should crush the Yellow Jackets. They were a bad NAIA team and are will need huge improvments to be a competitive D2 team. May be even more of a mismatch than my Yotes going against the Badgers.

I'm really looking forward to the yotes game; I would really like to see them stay competitive.

  3. UND needs to be given credit for 2 major aspects: increasing student retention and growing graduate students. That is the proper way to be growing a school and increasing its national rankings and reputation.

Now UND needs to work on increasing its 4 year graduation rate. That is one area that UND ranks really low (I definately did not help out this statistic).

Me either! I had to cut it short at 4.5; in hindsight what's another year ;)

  4. Love how you guys all say MN is so bad when we are going to play them. Are they any worse than Idaho or Fresno? Last year they won their last two games against Iowa and ILL and opened this year and played USC to almost a draw. Their last game they beat last years MAC champion. They had a bad game against NMSU but hell who doesn't have bad games once in awhile. We'll see what happens, we could be pee down our leg and get taken to the wood shed.

Go away, you are delusional if you think MN is on a level playing field with Fresno this year. This post is not about UND, Idaho, or Fresno.

  5. Actually will be a Dakota doubleheader on BTN on Saturday with the Yotes - Badger game preceding the Bison - Gophers. If you can't decide who to cheer for in the second game, at least support the Yotes in the first game as we will need all the help we can get. The Badgers have looked impressive so far and have a history of taking care of business when playing teams they should dominate (one exception being the Cal Poly game a couple of years ago). Hopefully we escape without any major injuries and the Camp Randall pregame experience provides enough liquid sedative for the Yote fans making the trip.

It would be great to see the yotes give them a scare. Frankly I am so sick of Bison banter that I have to go for the gophers on this one.

Hopefully we can still play the yotes in the future; games are always tight!

  6. Lakes is a man of mystery. He works alone.

    lone-wolf.jpg

Haha I love it how most Bison fans despise this guy; he really is the king of all tools. Anyone know his real name?

For the record, I do like to see the Bison do well, but guys like lakes really make it hard sometimes.

  7. And apparently Cal-Poly's complete butt whoopin on the Jack's didn't make much of an impression as the Jacks have more votes than Poly?

I don't understand this either because I watched Cal Poly play up vs San Diego State (last week I think) and even though they handily lost they hung in there. Cal Poly could easily be our toughest game on the schedule this year.

  8. Revenue is the bottom line no matter what is the sport dumba$$. You keep hitting on football and basketball which is fine, but that fact is revenue is revenue. That is my point o wise one. Your comments prove that you are being short-sighted. If SU had hockey you would count it - don't lie to yourself.

  9. We smack UND because most of their sports teams are not doing so hot right now. And cause they tried following us thinking moving to D1 is easy and really, it is pretty hard. People like you and DaveK don't help UND's cause. Numerous times on this board I have said UND has a lot to be proud of, a very good hockey program. A good place to go to get your degree, etc. Yet you feel the need to trash NDSU fans because we have the same mindset as almost every single D1 FCS/FBS has. 28 of the 245 members of FBS/FCS have hockey programs. That is a very low percentage. That is a reason that most people simply don't care. For the average American male sports fan, he won't be able to tell you who was even in the Frozen Four. He won't know who won your guys biggest day of the year! He won't know who won the FCS either, but we don't parade around bragging how everyone and their sister loves NDSU. UND feels the need to because hockey is all you guys got going for you right now.

I dont care if it shows UND in a good light. All I said was seeing the numbers on football/basketball would be nice because those are far and away the two most popular sports in college athletics.

U of M was our super bowl during the transition, now it isn't. At least not for the reasonable fans who would rather see a conference title than an FBS win. This thread is going nowhere because of your weird anti-coresport comparison. That is a comparison that has merit. The total attendence is very politically correct cause it counts every sport, but people generally would like to see the "big sport" comparisons. Such as, Notre Dame has X number of fans per year at football and basketball, I wonder how well they are doing in comparison to Auburn, Oh! Auburn is bringing in Y number. Thats not bad, but looks like Texas is leading the way.

    In your shortsighted eyes.

  10. The two places you named were Northern cities, Juneau especially should know who the Sioux are because Alaska has a couple of college hockey teams and nothing else really to speak of. In case you were/are unaware, hockey has some significance up there. As for New York, they like their hockey too, Rangers, Islanders, Devils, Bruins, Philidelphia are all close by. A lot of hockey schools out there too. As for the many sioux alum you speak of, sorry bro but not many people watch Versus.

I for one, went on a cruise the year App St. beat Michigan and that was down in the Bahamas. I feel like that might be a more fair objective way of looking at this considering people from all of the country go on cruises. I saw zero UND shirts. I saw 3 Bison shirts, those belonged to me, my mom, and my dad. Several people asked who North Dakota St. was and when I brought up UND having a pretty good hockey school none of them were aware of them either. I saw App. St. shirts on several people and I asked them what it was like to live there, turned out none of them were from there, and they were all just talking because they noticed each other wearing the shirts.

Nationally, App St. football is more well known as a sports team than UND, whether you like it or not. Football is king in the US, and when you do what they did on National television, people remember your name.

Well you are correct in that football is king but let's look at it this way: I have yet to meet a single NDSU grad in Colorado, but on the other hand I have met quite a few UND grads (skiing, bars, whatever). I even know of a bar that carries UND football and hockey when possible. UND is not very well known nationally but is sure as hell more well known than NDSU (not talking the state of ND here btw).

  11. So would you guys say the same thing if the trophy was sitting in Fargo?

Miami (OH) was the Redskins until 1997. They still competed against Cincinati for the victory bell. If UND wanted to keep it that is fine. Just seems like if the schools are playing that the trophy should play its own small part in the game. Not like the players need it, but it gives them that little extra motivation to get the job done. Also, it makes it fun for the fans to poke a little fun at the other side, granted, the trophy's time might be over. Its meaning has went down obviously considering its been awhile since the two teams played.

Yeah but is there an Indian head on one side of the bell? (honestly don't know just assume it doesn't otherwise the pc crowd would eat it up)

  12. Clearly UND has had the better transition in football, they have played much tougher teams with much greater success than NDSU. UND is the clear football powerhouse in the state of ND, you guys won the Nickel in 2003, that is a major deal. It correlates well to 2011 and the on field success the Sioux are accomplishing.

You get dumber every time you post.

  13. It should be the actual live video. UND and Idaho both use NeuLion as their webhost. Whenever UND plays AT a school that also uses NeuLion, we almost always pick up their webcasts. That is why it is good for people to regularly check the webcasts on FightingSIoux.com, there have been many times I have caught away games by checking North Dakota Insider.

Good to know, thanks for the insight. Unfortunately my only chance of picking up this game will be the AM station out of Dickinson and or Beaulah as I am leaving Colorado today to go on a 4 day mountain bike trip down the Maah Daah Hey trail in the Badlands north of Medora. Should be interesting!

  14. I'm going to give NDSU's new home yellow jersey an honorable mention here. The first time I saw it I thought it was a practice jersey. Very, very plain. An outlined number might have kept them out of honorable mention status.

UND's green jersey gets a mention here too. You shouldn't see how much the guys are sweating on a football jersey. There were some guys with three shades of green: dry jersey, wet jersey, helmet.

LOL very true! How did our uniforms get so bad all of a sudden?

  15. The Alerus is what it is. A concrete box along the highway that made a handful of local people a lot of money (kind of like the Choice Wellness Center will). Sterile and boring (kind of like the Drake game!!). Hopefully Faision is working behind the scenes to secure a long term home for Sioux football for their entry into to the BSC and beyond (WAC/MWC???). Why is it that UND hasn't paid for a football stadium maybe since the 1920's yet it still doesn't have a plan or money set aside for a on-campus football stadium that would cost millions of dollars? I know its nice to have people like Ralph to cut checks for 125 milion dollars but when are we gonna lead the way and get it done.

    +1 Well said sir.

  16. Saturday's game will be available on FIghtingSioux.com with UND Insider subscription, per UNDFootball Twitter.

Actual live video, or radio as usual?

  17. I grew up playing hockey and football in Devils Lake so it was only natural that UND hockey was who I looked up to as a kid. I still remember my first ever Sioux hockey game that I attended with my squirt team to this day. I mainly remember how big it was and how bright the lights were. As I grew up I started going to a football here and there. Since nobody wants a hockey player who is 5'9" with average speed, so after high school I decided that an education at UND was the best bet. In college I went to almost every football and hockey game; simply awesome! The education paid off and now I am out working and skiing in Colorado.

Moving away has had no adverse effect on my allegiance to UND. I watch hockey games online or at a bar in downtown Denver called Jacksons. Last year I watched the football games online but now I have FCS and I was able to catch Thursday's win! I also was at the CC series down in Springs last winter, this year I get to see DU and Northern Colorado in football! I have family up there so I try to coordinate visits with Sioux sports (this year hunting and the Icebreaker tourney and maybe the football game that afternoon).

I am grateful as an alum and a fan that I can follow Sioux sports as closely as I currently can. I live 1,000 miles away and I get just as much coverage as I would if I still lived in Grand Forks, short of regularly attending the games in person.

  18. Could the Alerus be transfered into a retractable roof stadium? Just pop the roof off and stick a new roof on it and add seating in the endzones to make us FBS eligible.

That would be so cool but I could be wrong here but to me it looks like the Al was built to be permanent; i.e. not able to be expanded. But yeah it would be ideal if it could be expanded into a horseshoe and a retractable roof added in. Anybody have any insight on whether the Al can even be expanded on?

  19. I watched the game, pretty lack luster performance and crowd. That place looked like a morgue on tv imo.

I have a hard time taking you seriously when you use a profile picture such as yours. New quarterback kept the playbook rather simple IMO. I have seen much worse crowds in this transition. Go back to bisonville.

  20. Not to mention that nemisis; the NAIA schools. Lindenwood beat UNC in Greeley. LIndenwood and Sioux Falls have been the cream of the NAIA playoffs in recent years. Maybe they are not such bad teams, eh? Let's see how strong UNC is this year before any final judgement, but UND will play them and it could be interesting.

I will be there, should be interesting. I watched the first quarter via webcast on Big Sky tv yesterday and they didn't look that great, but neither did we.
