  1. On the Herald site one poster recommended the new name be "Sundogs" which is a cold weather phenomenon and would be a completely unique name with an interesting opportunity to create a cool logo.

I love the Fighting Sioux name but I think that we can't get away with simply no nickname so what do you guys think of this name/logo idea?

  2. I watched that game with my younger brother (NDSU Graduate....ahhh....) and of course had to hear it the entire game about how Sioux Falls looked like the better Football team, the better coached team, the more excited team, etc.....

Sad thing is...he was right....that game wasn't a fluke. The better team won.... :(

Yeah at the time I still lived in Nodak and I decided to go pheasant hunting that day instead (in retrospect a great idea), but I was able to tune for like 10 minutes and Sioux Falls was definitely the best team. It was gross! That had to be rough hearing your brother rip on you about losing to a NAIA team; I feel for ya. High hopes for this year so we will see if the better recruits pay off!

  3. After losing to Sioux Falls no game should be labled a gimme. I agree too this game should be on the same level as Idaho or Fresno State. You play tough for 4 quarters not 1.

Good point, at the time I remember thinking that game would be a gimme too, but it was quite the opposite. We need to show up for ALL games!

  4. Remember Sioux Falls!!!! Looks like Drake has a pretty nice team coming back from last year. About 3/4 of the starters including a QB that played very well against Montana State until getting KO'd. They gave Montana State a pretty good game if the press release is at all accurate. Almost 300 yds with a new QB playing half the game. Originally I thought this game was a cupcake, but now I am not so sure. UND should prepare as if they are playing a major opponent and not looking ahead to Idaho. A loss or a poor performance against Drake would be a poor way to start the season. Go Sioux, or whomever the hell we are now!

Agreed, past posters have eluded to the fact that Drake is an gimme game and that is not true. I am glad that others are realizing that the only gimme on our schedule is Montana Western. We need to bring our A game!

  5. Yes!! I told u all this day would come! Took a bit longer than i thought but we are victorious.

You win, now the Sioux can be forgotten about in time. Realistically other than the Fighting Sioux Logo, what else do you have that can offer positive national recognition? the answer is nothing, you win so now it is time to forget that the Sioux people even exist. You asked for it.

  6. I realize this topic has already been covered extensively but I decided to create a separate thread for it to help sort out discussions as it will continue to be relevant for the next couple weeks. Who will win the job? Does seniority and leadership offer the greatest advantage and give Goska the job? Does pure passing ability propel Bradley into the starting spot? Or does a sleeper like Hendrickson or Comes take the reins? Ultimately, winning games is the most important thing; however, until the Sioux start playing games this QB competition is about as good as it gets.

This is indeed a great topic and deserves a good debate.

My thoughts: The first thing that jumps out in my mind is Bradley's quick release of the ball. The kid seems to be a natural passer that can scramble when he needs to and this is exactly what we are missing. On the other hand Goska seems to have made some great improvements so who knows. You are absolutely correct in that winning games is what matters and I do not really care who is the starter as long as they pull their weight. We seem to be on the right track as our recruiting classes of late have been great; but the missing link is a solid all around QB that can lead the team. I think that someone will shine in fall camp and that will translate to the playing field; and the coaches know more than I do.

    Is it September 1st yet?

  7. Not a lot of North Dakota/Minnesota kids discussed in this recruiting thread....guess its all part of being a DI football program. ???

I'm going to miss the days when the Sioux had QBs from Cogswell.....defensive backs out of Red River High School.....great running backs from Washburn, and speedy little receivers from Bismarck.

I would certainly like to see more kids from Nodak and northern MN but it may be time for North Dakota's high school football system to become more competitive with other states. In Nodak it seems that most of the kids merely participate whereas many other states have their kids training at least half of the year. When growing up we didn't get to play tackle until 7th grade but at least now they have pee wee tackle leagues. (played football in the Nodak system for Devils Lake). Just a thought...

  8. These games being aired on tv are the same tv ones last year. Whats everyone all excited about? All home games on tv, don't matter to me, i'm at the game, and some away games on tv. There was some away games on tv last year. Or am I missing something?

I am just curious about the home FB and Hockey games because I live in Colorado. I will most certainly be at the games when UND visits DU this February; as well as UND at Northern Colorado FB in October. Last year I was at the CC series and the UND fan turnout almost equaled CC. I think that there is a lot of alum out here and I was even able to buy a green beer!

  9. Having big aspirations is fine, but to say that North Dakota has "below average" facilities is way out of line in my book. Ask any football or basketball player about the top reasons they chose North Dakota, and I'll bet 75% of them will have the facilities in their top 3 reasons.

The Alerus may not be "FBS ready", but neither is UND...................part of the reason North Dakota moved from Memorial Stadium was because the stadium was outdated and nearing capacity on a regular basis. Neither is true of UND's current situation with have the Alerus as its home field. The Alerus is perfect for UND...........an up-to-date, TV ready, spacious, climate controlled environment for the fair-weather fans that patronize UND football games in order to pass the time until hockey season starts.........if you are bummed about the atmosphere at the Alerus, I think you'll be severely disappointed if UND moves back outdoors to a modified 20,000+ seat Memorial Stadium.

As for the Betty, I'd rather have 3,000 people in 3,000 seats than have 3,000 people in 6,000 seats.

Agree the soccer field sucks, but it is just soccer.............

Baseball should be dropped. Won't happen since UND has invested in Kraft field.

Back on topic.............great news about the Indoor Practice Facility. I hope it still includes plans for the indoor track....................UND's track and field facilities are the real joke around here...............

That may have been true when we were a top tier D2 university but you really missed my points. I said that the AL is fine for NOW; but not the near future. You also missed my point that the Big Sky conference will play a major part to this and I guarantee that attendance will pick up because i know first hand a lot of Grand Forks falls in the fair weather fan category; I went to school and worked there after and I was at the Cal Poly game in 09 when nobody showed up. My point was that with the Big Sky and a new training facility we will be well on our way to becoming a top tier D1 school; where we should have been 20 years ago. I wish we wouldn't have waited so long to make the jump but !@$! happens. BTW we also do lose a lot of recruits because of our facilities (hockey excluded). Thankfully we are moving in the right direction and that is what matters!

  10. Most of you are spot on in that the training facility is an immediate need and if done correctly will allow us to land higher end recruits, which in turn will create the domino effect. Add in some winning seasons starting now and I believe that the dominos will be lined up for a donor(s) to step in and make a new football stadium a reality.

I also believe that we are finally moving in the overall right direction (other than the nickname nightmare). I say finally because when I attended the U from 03 - 07 I was always finding myself wondering how we got by with such below average facilities (REA excluded). The AL is fine for now but they had to know that we would out grow it with an imminent move to D1; and who designs is without future expansion in mind?. The soccer field is such a joke that I actually lied to one of my friends visiting for the weekend and told them that they just practiced there when they asked me about it. Realistically this is a top tier public university but for some reason a lot of people think that since we are lil old Nodak that we should be ok with average and that is so not true! This is the University of North Dakota and not the U of Grand Forks and I am happy that we are finally seeing the bigger picture and we belong competing against teams like Montana; and not SCSU or U of Mary. In the end we will need a bigger stadium and people like me will certainly make yearly trips back home to catch a football game; but it all begins with the Big Sky and the training facility!

  11. Funny - Nothing to do with Gene - check your own backyard.. Last I heard Gene presented UND with a everyother year contract that was turned down.

I would actually like to see them play every other year but I keep seeing nothing but stupid comments about who is better but the fact of the matter is nobody knows because they don't play each other. It is nothing but armchair quarterback speculation. Maybe someday we will get to meet in the playoffs and then we can determine who is actually better!

  12. For top end talent it is really true; they need to weigh a 40ish game season with time for the weight room and individual edge work training and skill sharpening as well as competing against big, strong, men

    vs

a 70ish game season with little time for weights, more team based practice, against younger, less physically developed (generally) players, who are in general more skilled.

I have to believe that NCAA is a better training ground, whereas the CHL is a better place to display how sick your skills are.

I couldn't agree more and college definitely allows more time for development of body and skills.

  13. Bison fan here who wants it back. A couple points:

I wish they could do it annually but I understand that since they will not be in the same conference it makes it more difficult. Both teams have difficult conference schedules, and it is a race to 7 and usually 8 wins for the playoffs. So we are always looking at the payday games (UM, Kansas, Colorado State, etc) as well as the cupcake home game early in the year. In my opinion, the best case scenario would be a conference game. Obviously that isn't going to happen because everyone involved is or was too pigheaded to do this thing together (hindsight is 20/20). Because of the cupcake and payday factor, I think the next best option is every other year, and rotate venue.

Iowa State and Iowa can do it on a larger level, I wish we could see it happen here. And everyone hates each other I guess, but count me in the camp that even though you hate your rival, you can also make each other better.

You raise a great point. Colorado and Colorado State play every year even though they are in different conferences, but my guess is that it is easier to pull this off with FBS schedules. Any thoughts?

  14. Yeah good call, I got that added as well and it's like sports on steroids. A guy should be able to get other college hockey as well.

Are Sioux football games being televised on FCS again as well? Much better then watching the internet feed!
