I'm guessing this is the first time BU has made the trip to Kato?  Somebody gonna clue them in on Mettlers? :)

Boston hockey teams don't go slummin west of the Appalachians very often, I'm sure they will find Mankato culturally and intellectually stimulating.

I suppose you would also counsel a battered wife to stay with her abuser, because he gave her a really nice wedding ring 20 years ago?

    Crosses a big line.

Saying things like this really trivializes how terrible and evil spouse abuse is.

Lets find a different way to express your issues and resentment towards the hockey team/REA.

    Hey, mods.

This discussion really deserves its own thread. Having it parked here suggests that it is anti-Kennedy blather masquerading as concern about the relationship with REA.

regardless of the light in which we disagree on the framing of this issue.

It reeeelly is not a good thing for UND and right now is a bad time for it,

this probably does deserve its own thread as it will be a huge topic tomorrow.  I don't share your optimism for Kennedys image in this sloberknocker.

You seem to be loyal to them. Do you have inside information? Are you really willing to say it's "stupid" to suggest that they might not presently be acting in the best interests of UND? Why is it so easy to accept that Kennedy is in the wrong? I mean, he must have access to the financials, right?

A front page article pitting UND vs its largest benefactor is NOT good for UND, at all.  I would doubt any minor win in the contract for short term financial gain would compare to the shiytball of fury if this mess snowballs.

Never met an Engelstad, but I do know for a fact that the state in NO way will put up with any BS about funding needed in Forks or at UND if the mess causes real issues with private entities who are willingly funding multiple areas of athletic and academic and economic streams.

I would suggest Kennedy enter the front doors, bend the knee and kiss the bronzed foot of ol Ralph's statue, and beg this doesn't cost him his next few jobs too.

The next time a "Central Florida" is looking, that institution will want none of someone who pisses off teh donors for pittance, especially when the end game is in the University's favor.

Maybe the Engelstads have outlived their usefulness. A one-trick (albeit a big one) pony with perpetual sour grapes about the Sioux. Maybe they're insufferable, which is why the negotiations went south?

You have zero dam clue what the REA actually has meant and will mean for the future of Grand Forks. But hey lets shuck off the best thing that GF has for economic generation and put all your hopes on the economic impact of those 5 dates a year for football.   God damn thats stupid.

Kennedy critics can't have it both ways. If the contract is as bad for UND as some suggest, and re-negotiation (by force, if need be) is an absolute economic necessity, then he has to do something. Keeping the Engelstad family happy and not hurting their feelings are probably not as important as keeping the lights on.

When it comes to keeping the benevolent donors happy, Kennedy should know his job is to wipe his chin and say thank you.  Only way UND loses real money is by losing the Engelstads

The REA and UND both need each other. UND needs a place to play at least hockey, and REA needs people through the doors.  REA will renew whatever contract is being disputed because they are not making money if the building sits empty.

AHL team would be through the door faster than poop through a goo... Hawk?  UND would play in .....the Icon?

UND without the Ralph is Mayville State with a stagnant coulee.

This is why I question REA leadership playing hardball here. They know they have a shelf life, and one would think they want to be the obvious choice to manage the arena full time once control is officially ceded to UND, and UND inevitably puts it out for bid. Unless, perhaps, they are content to run out the duration of the gift and then bail.

They are a benevolent non-profit, right? Set up for the good of UND? And they run to the Herald to crap on Kennedy?

Based on historical record, Kennedy has much shorter market expectancy than the Current REA leadership.

Go play in the parking structure?

The Alerus Center could potentially accommodate basketball. Other options could certainly also be in the discussion. The "parking structure" is not being considered, sir.

I can see the brain drain of leadership thinking they would have a pleasant experience playing in a huge empty football field end zone as opposed to the Betty, that would be on par with the quality of decision making in the UND Administration.

REA is run by a bunch of schmucks who care far more about their personal image and opinions than the actual University and its student. Per the article, McGarry says it isn't about the nickname/logo, but I really suspect a lot of this is; and of course the revenue sharing/contract re-negotiations mentioned by @jdub27.

Bottomline: IT IS JUST A LOGO/NICKNAME! The success of the student-athletes (wins, losses, GPA, graduation rate, etc.) is far more important than the logo that the "fans" wear on the front of their shirt. So, just as one could argue placing "The Fighting Hawk" on center court doesn't increase graduation rates or wins, one could also argue that the REA explicitly not allowing it is even more biased and emotionally-based than the mindset of those requesting the logo.

Furthermore, if the student-athletes voted and ended up wanting the logo on center court, then it should be done. Simple as that. The REA should have no say in such a student-athlete driven decision.

The REA is obviously a beautiful world-class facility, but by entering into this agreement nearly two decades ago, UND made a pact that would NOT be entirely in their favor.

Go ahead and make that threat. Go play in the parking structure.

I'm sure the response by the REA to that pathetic threat from Kennedy?......

  10. The talk of the grand cities mall reminds me of the gateway mall in Bismarck... both are a blight on the landscape.

Huge areas of massive potential for commercial real estate redevelopment.... but being held in the limbo world of quasi functioning.

The cities should do everything they can, including maybe an "accidental"  fire or runaway payloader incident to rid the structures and redevelop.

Massive missed tax collection potential, I think it would be in the people best interest to for city government to act, but neither will.

I will just continue to #PrayForMyRims

I would love to see this come to Grand Forks, but Kraft Field will need a lot of improvement! Nothing better then enjoyed a cold one on a hot day, while watching the boys of summer. Colleigete Summer League Baseball is pretty popular in Bismarck, Rochester, and Duluth. I would prefer Grand Forks to have an American Association team, but anything would be awesome.

I hear there is a former college coach in the area ;)

Didnt kraft host a summer wood bat league already... Channel Cats.

From what I remember it failed rather quickly.

if the caps win the cup does gersich get a ring ...even if he doesn't play another shift this postseason?

He would need to play at least one game in the Final, not just the conference rounds.

He then would qualify for engraving, if not they could petition but most likely would not, 4 to 5 games played probably shouldn’t. I would think he gets a ring if they win even if he doesn’t play or dress again.

Everyone gets a ring, the receptionist at the practice facility gets a ring.

My prediction is that if Wash gets to the final he will play cause the Caps are thin and injuries mount, and let’s face it, suspensions are possible with a the heavy hitters they have, sometimes a half inch
