Something tells me 3 launches in a row with a first time starter might mean 3 and out … but gotta try something different. Honestly these conversations are pointless. all I know is true fan excitement is going to continue to wane until we get some new leadership for this program… might not be next year or even for another 5 years, but it is needed whenever it happens

Yes and No. NDSU and even UND have more impressive tailgating and concourses. I also think that the buildings (Alerus Center, FargoDome) are just overall bigger and better than the skeleton stadium in Brookings. But, on a beautiful fall day, with a sellout, SDSU does have an awful nice gameday atmosphere and experience. with all that said, the point does remain: Brookings SD should not be kicking Grand Forks ND arse. UND has a ton of resources relatively speaking and should be right up there and yet, well, they aren’t. That tells me that the resources we do have are not being utilized correctly. Again, brain trust issue.
-
Same ol’ same ol’ pathological mindset. Don’t agree 2008-2020 were just wasted pointless years. That’s justification for what is happening now; excuses.
-
It’s the football brain trust. That’s the simple answer I’m afraid. Last 10 years of data also supports this unfortunate truth (since 2016, 12-15 in games with crowds over 10k). Need change I’m afraid, but I worry our culture/environment/institution is scared of that for several reasons, none probably legitimate.

You want positive posting? UND *can* win the rest of the games on their schedule and go 9-2 and host/win playoff games. Still possible that UND beats NDSU, which could have huge recruiting ramifications to help UND over the next few years. Any elaboration or further rhetoric beyond that would probably be considered “negative” posting, so will stop here.

Ouch! … but hey, everyone, leave poor Bubba alone. He’s trying his damnedest… and at UND football, that is all you can ask for. 20 years of participation awards …
-
Yup, Bob Nielson, current USD head coach, who beat NDSU on Saturday 9/30/23.
-
I agree; by 2030 we should hopefully be in position for a national championship … hopefully everyone on this board is alive and well by that point to witness it! also, when und is bigger and stronger in decade #3, will we then stop playing to not lose and start actually playing to win big games??
-
For what it is worth, Bubba was visibly pissed on the sideline after that inadvertent whistle, but he didn’t portray “fight” and “fire” to his team. They went right ahead and followed the blunder up with an allowed big return. This is reflective of a soft team. Bubba’s leadership is overall poor, and his body language and communication does not resonate with his teams. It’s over, there’s no hope for a championship with Bubba as HC.
-
I agree with this premise, for sure. What you’re seeking and referring to is leadership - Dale had that, thus he was a championship head coach. But the Dale Lennon / Bubba Schweigert highlight years are over. Sooner we move on, sooner we put ourselves in a position to be better than NDSU and SDSU. The recent cowardness of UND in big games is just plain awful and unacceptable. And it highlights a lack of leadership (starts with the HC).

Yeah, last couple ball games had quite a few clowns in it. Subpar product on the field, year after year after year, does this. Blaming the fans who want excellence seems petty, but you do you.

Read the entirety of my post. Thanks.

Can’t complain too much there. Overall though, Tommy Schuster is a high floor, low ceiling player. Definitely not a next level player. Need to heighten that ceiling a bit. Maybe that higher ceiling player is already on the roster, time will tell, but how much longer should we wait? 1 season? 3 seasons? Another decade?
-
Exactly … Coaching staff need to better develop and utilize the quarterback position. That falls on the OC/QB coach, who for UND is the same person.
-
Change is the worst according to @Mama Sue … pathetic “The only thing that stays the same is everything changes” … just that change occurs at a snail’s pace in some places.
-
Time to move on. Next game: Western Illinois (0-4) @ UND (2-2) Saturday, October 7, 2023. Alerus Center 1 PM Western Illinois last game: 37-17 loss at Southern Utah UND last game: 42-21 loss at South Dakota State This game *should* make everyone feel better.
-
Good ol’ boys club. UND won’t take the next step as a football program until the days of Roger Thomas/Dale Lennon/Bubba Schweigert are behind us. All great men / coaches, with tremendous legacy, but at some point, you have to move on. Change can be a good thing, especially when progress stops.

Nothing new. See, well, just last season (SDSU, Nebraska, NDSU, Weber State).
-
The event you’re referencing is when Cedric Case flipped to Texas State in 2019. Need to hold on to those commitments (coaches can take action to prevent that), but also, it’s been 4 years (I repeat, 4 years!) since then. There’s been numerous opportunities to get better QBs. Transfer portal? It’s a product of the coaches own doing. The idea that the coaches - who are in complete control of their own actions (or lack thereof) - are independent of the roster is ridiculous. Made best of the situation? Going 5-6 (2021) and 7-4 (2022) is not good. Schuster’s play in big games has been average at best. There’s been a false narrative that he’s been elite, when in fact, he’s been a game manager that avoids mistakes. Sounds like UND just rode with Schuster due to the situation described in 2019, produced middle of the road football, and most just went with it, not demanding excellence, as per usual with UND football.
-
Think back to ~2018/2109, when the current teams were just getting formed via recruiting. how did Bubba and UND get boat-raced by Stieg and SDSU in recruiting and development? SDSU simply doing better is one thing, but this?? It’s just not acceptable now 5 years later. This is all on top of what NDSU has done to continuously embarrass UND head to head and in recruiting. Bubba needs to be held accountable. He’s failed. back in 2018/2019, after und went a pathetic 3-8 in 2017, everyone said just give Bubba another 5 years. Well here we are. Crushed.
-
There’s no question they need to be bigger, stronger, faster, better … Look at the atrocity SDSU just performed, running up and down the field. See NDSU and Weber State last year. It’s been an issue for a while. At its core, a lot of recruiting issues, but also scheme and philosophy. This all falls back on Bubba. He’s failed.
-
Beauty of competition. Have to compete and out do their competition, both on the field and off the field (recruiting). They haven’t done that. Need to try new avenues. Trying the same thing over and over again hasn’t worked. Developing local high school talent isn’t the only way to go about this thing …
-
However, if this moves forward, between Q, Tommy, and Feeney/Jerry, you’ll have a platoon system that won’t improve anything. Still doesn’t solve the lack of a consistent running game. At some point, have to go with a different QB, commit to the run more, and better establish the line of scrimmage. Hard having a QB that can’t truly stretch the field on shots. I’m all in on stating that now with Tommy Schuster - he can’t air it out on shot plays and it hurts the overall offense.
-
This is fair, but the current QB room is the coaching staff’s own doing. These coaches set their roster, and recruit their players. Let’s not act like the transfer portal and other options to optimize the QB room haven’t been there since 2019 when Freund took over as OC ……
-
Well when you phrase it like that I don’t disagree. Definitely trust Danny more than a weirdo on a bike.
