  1. Fortunately for football, the HC realizes the state of the program and is focusing on things that matter. player grades, getting out and supporting university activities, recruiting in ND/MN, engaging alumni, and so on. Whatever logo is on the uniform/shoes is indifferent to the football program.

Yes, all of those things are currently emphasized by the program because of Bubba. A couple years ago with Mussman, supporting fellow athletic teams, emphasizing ND/MN, and engaging alumni was at a minimum. Which leads exactly into my point; UND football has experienced an instant turnaround in many off-the-field areas due to Bubba (on the field is coming up real soon). Men's basketball could possess that same turnaround if the right man has the head job.

  2. It just shows how delusional the program is right now. They as a team, including their head coach, honestly think the brand of clothing they wear matters. It is embarrassing.

And yet people think UND men's basketball is on the right track...

Of course, many said the same for UND football following the 2012 season.

  3. Jones was on also talking about how young they are and how people deserve second chances.

Didn't hear him bash Adidas but sound like he thinks his crap don't stink

De roun at least plays hard and just balls.

UND men's basketball won't get anywhere with Jones at the helm. I understand people want to let him coach this year and next just for continuity and fairness, but the inevitable is the inevitable. The guy just can't get it done here at UND.
  4. Was listening to Hennessy this morning and they had De Rouen and Cashman from the basketball team on. De Rouen took a shot at Adidas saying he would never wear them again because he had too many injuries with them.

    Good lord...

Coming from a player that averages, what, 2 or 3 ppg. I'm sure Michigan, Kansas, Wisconsin, and Louisville, just to name a few, are all doing poor on the court as well because of Adidas. Give me a break. Jones and his club are so lost it's not even funny.

  5. The "people" of Grand Forks aren't stupid; they read the Herald and know what UND is doing on a national scale. Also, many UND athletic fans aren't regulars; therefore, they need reason to attend. Winning is the number one reason, and just winning at home doesn't cut it. If UND men's basketball wins their home games but then loses every road game, you end up with a .500 record and loses vs. every big-name team because they're all on the road. When UND's men basketball squad has a legitimate team, one that wins in a road pay-out game and beats NDSU, fans will notice and the attendance will rise. To this point, the best Jones has been able to muster is a .500 record and yet people support him....

  6. Adams is a Duck.........

To be expected; just too good of an opportunity for Mr. Adams.

It's gonna hurt EWU a bit, but as UND saw first-hand last season, EWU's backup QB (now the starter) is more than capable. UND doesn't play EWU this season anyways, at least not in the regular season...

  7. Dalton Feeney, 6'4" QB Bismarck Century should be on the list. Had great Soph yr and missed last year due to foot inj. Healthy now and playing BB for Century. He also plays baseball and is projected as potential draft choice. Reportedly throws 90 mph last year. Kids a great athlete. Dad, Steve, played at UND. Grandfather was FB coach at Bismarck High and uncle played at Ag School.

Sounds and looks like a great prospect. I'm sure Bubba and his staff will be looking into him; try get him to attend summer camp if possible!

  8. Must be confusing football facilities with basketball facilities. The Betty is a nice place to play. When it's packed, it's a great environment. But the university has little to do with a player coming to play. The coaches recruit the kids to play in their program with their style of play. They really don't have a lot to sell but themselves and the playing time.

I will agree with you and your "people's" opinion. Coach seems to lack in some areas. That being said...due to his success last couple years, his subsequent extension, the new guys here and coming... Let the season play out. They are supposed to be ninth in the BSC. Faison isn't getting rid of Jones this year. If things go bad next year and you see the same issues as this year, then we as fans/alumni/supporters need to demand better. I will be expecting better next year, and if it isn't, I will be voicing myself in letters to the athletic department demanding better.

Absolutely, I agree with you. I hope, with the youth on the team and the upcoming talented recruits, that UND will be much improved next year. Of course, we went through the same hopeful faith just with football from 2012 to 2013. If anything, we know how Faison handles the potential dismissal of head coaches; gives them two seasons - if they don't improve and things get worse, they are cut loose.

I'd say Jones has next season to improve on whatever happens this season. If there's improvement, great - I look forward to watching many wins in the Betty versus teams such as NDSU, Montana, and Weber. If the team doesn't improve and just gets worse, than it's time for new coaching. I assume this is also how Faison looks at it.

  9. Didn't mean to hurt your feelings. So let me ask you this? Would you call a thread by a bunch of folks anonymously calling for a coaches head a personal attack?

You're really quite amusing, but I'll play along.

Anyone who understands collegiate coaching knows the premise: you win or else. It's a performance-based occupation, just like the IRS representative working your taxes or the mechanic repairing your vehicle. If they don't "get the job done", they will not have the opportunity to perform that job any longer. As an alumnus and financial supporter of UND athletics, I have a right to at least have an opinion on men's basketball and the coaching. I feel that the tenure of Brian Jones has been inadequate compared to the likes of NDSU and SDSU, and unless his upcoming performances prove otherwise, I feel the position should be reevaluated by the athletic department and perhaps opened for a new coach in a year or two. That's not a personal attack, but rather an opinion that I feel this site allows me to voice and debate.

  10. Darrell, for you this is very clever. Impressed. #gerbschmidt

Predictable personal attack. The reason I keep my sources somewhat anonymous is because of people like you; rather than actually discuss the dynamics of UND basketball (coaching), you just attack posters on this site. It's rather foolish and really looks like you have no proper defense for Jones' tenure as UND head men's basketball coach.

  11. Who are these people you speak with? Bad enough we are all anonymous on this board at the least we should credential our sources. Can't wait to hear.

Couple basketball coaches from a small North Dakota college (NAIA).

  12. 100% agree. There are several excuses being thrown about by certain posters in an attemp to justify this program's current shortcomings. It is my opinion that North Dakota should be a top 3 Big Sky team EVERY year. I have been very pleased with the way the team has performed in Big Sky play in its first two years. They met my expectations in 2013 & 2014. But I am certainly not in awe of a 2nd & 3rd place finish in one of the 10 worst conferences in the country.

I think that Jones has done a wonderful job replenishing the roster after the massive turnover from a year ago. When I look at Hooker and Shanks, I see two future All Conference players.

Some way, somehow, or someone now needs to get all of this talent to produce, and do it on a consistent basis, over the course of an entire season.

One thing I would agree with is that the talent on this year's team, along with incoming recruits for next year, is very good for the Big Sky Conference; however, that's more of a result of the University and it's facilities rather than the coaching. Jones has shown he can gather DI talent, but the handling of that DI talent in game situations is questionable in my opinion. I think there are many DII coaches and DI assistants out there, with an even lesser salary than Jones, that could get more out of the players currently on the team. Jones has too many blow out losses during his tenure, including conference games (Weber State) and rival games (the last 3 road games vs. NDSU). It's admirable that UND has done well in conference the past two years, but that's despite of the coaching and much more of a result of the poor conference competition in the Big Sky Conference. When talking to people who have direct college basketball experience, I'm always told Jones is not an impressive coach by any means. UND deserves better, because yes UND is a hockey school first and football school second, but superb coaching is the one thing that could get UND men's basketball dancing.
  13. Hookers younger bro should certainly be getting a look. I can post some more local names when I get time but these ones below are probably 3 of the bigger local guys next year. All probably scholarship worthy IMHO.

Brayden Lund - TE Minot, ND - great athlete with great size. Think he is in he Ben Ellefson TE mold, and UND only had a PWO at TE this year so I would think he we be a top local priority.

Mike Duginski - RB/S Moorhead - Speed Speed Speed. Check out the hudl you will be impressed. Hopefully getting Lawrence helps us here.

Zak Kuntz - FB/LB GF Red River - watch the hudl. This is a Bubba ball kind of kid at either lb or fb, and UND didn't take a FB this year. I also think its important to put a fence around Grand Forks.

Lots of others UND will want to get into camp but those three are good prospects.

    http://www.hudl.com/athlete/3150487/zak-kuntz

I agree. All three of these prospects should be really high priority local recruits for 2016!

  14. Has Cox bulked up enough to be a viable option? He needs to add about 30-40 pounds from last season IMO.

Cox has bulked up well. He'll be in the mix as soon as this fall. Watch him closely at spring ball; there's definite improvement.

  15. 9 man in ND is poor competition. ND in general is poor competition. There's just not enough kids. Plenty of good tough individuals though.

Textbook definition of diamond in the rough when dealing with ND high school football. In general, the competition and product on the field is poor, but there's consistently a few kids every year that can play DI football. They just need to be spotted and then developed with a full-time strength and conditioning program.

  16. Great job to get another road win, but I feel like it shouldn't have been such a challenge at the end.

UND with an uncharacteristic 20 turnovers

Shouldn't have been a challenge at the end? Not that surprising given how this team has been all season thus far...

  17. If Grady proves to be as good as advertised in Fall Camp, Bubba's got to pull his redshirt, doesn't he? Kid has way to much talent and we need O lineman that can establish our run game.

Not too complicated; if Grady is one of the 5 best offensive linemen in fall camp, he'll play.

The sky is the limit for Grady, but one has to understand the jump he's making from ND 9-man to FCS football. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see him redshirt.

  18. That is a good idea for most of the teams but Men's Basketball needs to wear Nike so that will throw things off a tad.  The color coordination thing could possibly matchup, if they would agree to it.  They have higher standards over there.

Men's basketball and Brian Jones need to grow up and get with the program here. Adidas contract needs to be department-wide.
