  1. Pitcher and Potts said they were attracted by North Dakota's "higher education roundtable," an ongoing consultation process that has given the Board of Higher Education and individual public colleges more authority in managing their own institutions.

In November 2000, North Alabama's faculty voted to approve a resolution of no confidence in Potts' leadership. Faculty members said then Potts was insufficiently devoted to academics, instead choosing to spend $8.6 million for a parking deck and $200,000 for a lion habitat for the school's mascot.

  2. SDSU didn't seem to have problems scheduling Montana and Georgia Southern, even with its pitiful ramp rate of football scholarships (36 to 39 to 43?), whereas NDSU was begging to schedule those teams. Seems the Big Sky teams would prefer a UND not a full strength.

NDSU has a home/home setup with Ga Southern. Also the reason SDSU is getting games with Montana (and I beleive has similar deals Delaware and UNI) is that SDSU is willing to do two away/one home game deals

Big Sky (or Gateway etc) teams would love to play UND- but not in Grand Forks.

  3. MONROE, La. - On Wednesday, the Louisiana-Monroe Mascot Committee endorsed Warhawks, the mascot suggestion that garnered the most votes in a recent online public poll.

While ULM's new mascot design has yet to be finalized, the committee has suggested the Warhawk mascot could assume a variety of identities that draw upon different strengths.

One Warhawk identity could relate to the area's aviation history. Warhawk has local historical connections to the P-40 Warhawk Airplane, flown by Northeast Louisiana's General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during WWII. The P-40 Warhawk was the first American plane to break the 300 MPH mark, was rugged, and could withstand heavy punishment.

The Warhawk identity might also include hawks, a fierce bird of prey, indigenous to this area and often seen on ULM's campus. The hawk symbolizes courage, speed, power and vision.

Rickabaugh Graphics representative Eric Rickabaugh will tour the ULM campus and northeast Louisiana to gain a feel for local flavor and will then incorporate that into prospective mascot designs. ULM staff is busy planning an unveiling of the mascot designs, with a goal of June 1.

ULM President James E. Cofer, Sr., who participated in Wednesday's decision, is grateful for the committee's extensive work over the past five months. "I want to thank the committee for all their hard work and their continued commitment to the university," he said. "The work is not done. We've outlined the next steps here today and all of us are counting on you to continue to do great work as we begin new traditions at ULM."

  4. Very true, but it is interesting that one of the rumored candidates to replace Glas within the hopefully not-too-distant-future is Montana assistant and ex-Jamestown College head coach Brad Huse. link.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Huse named head coach at Montana St it the not so distant future

  5. The crappy part is I don't know who Shawn-O use to be???

"RubeIdiot" it is shown in the quote ???

While we are still at it- can I get a name switch to "Hansel", it is what I use on every other board ;)

  6. I am perplexed by the discussion of expanding the seating in the Alerus. There has only been one sell-out in 5 years. There likely won't be any more sell-outs unless a DI move is made, and NDSU comes to town. That is also questionable, because by UND's numbers the final UND-NDSU game did not sell out either. I just don't see a need for it at this point in time. Perhaps after we've been members of the Big Sky for about 10 years, but not now. The only seating modifications that I think would be immediately beneficial to increasing attendance at the games, and relatively cost efficient, would be to add REA-style Club Lounges in the North and South concourses. The Clubs in the REA are always packed and offer a nice "upscale" alternative to the Suites, that both regular fans can afford and Corporations would be interested in owning seats in. Having a place in the building like this where fans are catered to would likely bring more people to the games just for the experience of being there, which is why alot of people come to hockey games, because it's the place to be on a Friday or Saturday night.

I know someone mentioned that moving FB games to 7 p.m. rather than 1 p.m. may help attendance. I'd agree. At least moving non-conference games to evening Kickoffs would certainly help attendance. Alot of people do work all day on Saturdays. Why does Coach Lennon oppose this?

Most coaches and players like to play games at 1 pm,

also does the Alerus actually seat 13,500? Haven't the last few "sellouts" been counted around 12,500? I have been to FB games in the UNI-Dome (which seats 16,500- with Bleacher type seating) and the Alerus seems a lot smaller. Could we have a Betty-type situation where the Alerus doesn't hold as many as we thought???

  7. Hockey could be a money maker for NDSU, but the difficult part is finding the money to get it started.

Possible but unlikely, very few schools "make" money on any sport. Even a hockey school with solid attendance, Ohio State, loses money on Men's Hockey, and for women's hockey you can essentially double your expenses without any additional revenue. Factor in that NDSU would probably have to lease/rent a city-owned facility and any chance at profit goes out the door. Down the road if hockey makes sense for NDSU I would be for it, but it certainly doesn't now.

On a side note, have their been any rumblings of a Kansas City school (ex UMKC) adding hockey? They are building a beautiful new arena there, which as far as I know does not have any major tenants (no NBA/NHL or major CB teams). A Kansas City school could follow the Omaha model (school in a Large Metro looking to get attention, Arena needing a tenant [even moreso than Omaha which has Creighton hoops] metro lacks major sports team etc etc etc). IMHO that type of situation would be the best for a college Hockey team.

  8. It's about knowing how to run a successful program in a Division I sport. UND has been doing it for more than 50 years.

Maybe UND should share this info with the women's hockey team

  9. I believe Lueck went there to play basketball. I think FB was kind of an afterthought.

Lueck went to NDSCS to play football, and then transferred to I-AA Murray St where he played (sparingly I beleive) before eventually transferring to UND.

  10. Wasn't Marshall 1A when Moss was there?

It's funny that Gado was a backup in college but ends up doing pretty well for himself in the NFL, but I don't think he is going to be an impact player considering his opportunity was due to a bunch of injuries and his fumbling problems.

Moss played both IAA and IA as did Pennington and I think Daunte Fumblepepper

  11. One game comparisons don't really tell the entire story. It's obvious that 1AA is a higher level of football, but it is a pretty minor jump that mainly involves the depth of the team at each postition.

In addition to depth, IAA also puts a lot more "impact players" in the NFL. In 5 of the last 7 years an NFL MVP award has gone to someone who played IAA football. Recent "impact" players who played IAA include Rich Gannon, Kurt Warner, Jimmy Smith, Rodney Harrison, Steve McNair, Darren Sharper, Brian Westbrook, Terrell Owens, Randy Moss, with new guys like Jerome Mathis (Pro Bowl KR) and Samkon Gado emerging this year.

Not a lot of bigtime NFL guys have come from DII recently

  12. I'm certainly not in favor of a dI move, but with regard to UNC, I don't think their recent problems have had much to do with increased competition in I-AA. They were far more inconsistent during their dII days than were UND or NDSU, particularly under Dalton, so having a couple of down years isn't all that unusual for them. The past two years, they would have struggled in the NCC, as well. As basically a glorified dII team in 2003, they did quite well in I-AA.

UNC went 3-2 against IAA teams in 03 (1-2 vs Fully Funded schools)

Since moving to IAA (03 for UNC/UCD, 04 for SU's), here are the records of schools vs fully funded IAA teams

    UNC 3-13

    UC-Davis 6-6

    NDSU 6-4

    SDSU 1-8

    combined 16-31

vs DII over that same time span

a combined 19-1, (in 03 UCD lost to GVSU in OT)

  13. UMD star receiver Greg Aker hadn't spoken with Ragsdale directly but said the move may have been made in part because of financial reasons. Aker said he had spoken Wednesday with UMD quarterback Ted Schlafke, who had talked to Ragsdale."I'm disappointed that UMD wasn't able to step to the plate to keep him," Aker said. "This will be the fourth offense I've had to learn in five years, so I guess I'm used to it. I hope the new offense keeps it pretty wide-open. That was a lot of fun last year."

Neither Ragsdale or Schlafke could be reached Wednesday night. The answering machine on Ragsdale's cell phone still noted he was UMD's offensive coordinator

WTF, what kind of reporter quotes a guy who had talked to a guy who had talked to the guy?

  14. Anderson update from Steve Hallstrom's media blog

One football recruiting note--talked to Matt Anderson's dad last night and he said that Northern Iowa and Montana State are out of the picture and since Minnesota hasn't called they're probably out too. Dad says it looks like either UND or NDSU.
  15. Again, I like the idea of Lacrosse at UND. It does make more sense than baseball and softball, and one can make a very solid case for UND not sponsering those sports. That pains me to say because I've always been a fan of baseball, as it was always my best sport. The problem with baseball and softball at UND, aside from the climate, is that we can never realistically compete with NDSU for recruits (local or otherwise) because they have the luxury of playing in Newman Outdoor Field. It would be the exact same thing if they do end up adding hockey, trying to compete for recruits with us when we have the REA in our pocket. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no way that UND could cut both baseball and softball in favor of adding lacrosse, unless we added both men's lascrosse and a women's sport? Is there women's lacrosse? I do think lascrosse fits for UND, if it could be played in the Alerus. I'm sure the Alerus would be more than willing to put anything in that building with all of their financial troubles. And I would think that with as few schools sponsoring lacrosse, travel wouldn't be that big of an issue, especially if it was played in a facility like the Alerus. Denver would be an instant rival. And it should be pointed out that many of the schools that sponser DI Lacrosse, also sponsor DI hockey which could help out UND if they picked up the sport. Also, many of the universities that sponsor DI lacrosse, also play DI-AA football.

UND has been about even with NDSU baseball over the last 5 years. Newman hasn't helped out that much

and yes there is women's lacrosse, Northwestern won the title last year (in only their 3rd or 4th year of having a team)

  16. Why shouldn't it happen?...There were maybe 4 elitle arenas for recruiting in the NCC...But places like Augie, and Morningside were like HS Gyms...They have the resources now in The NISC...Not only for Scholarships but are upgrading there Faclities as well...With the loss of the SU's I think it will be hard to ever dominate in BBAll like we have in FB...Agreed "Coaching" is a big Part Look what Mac did at Wayne a few years back was unbelieveable......

Miles also took SW Minnesota St to the Elite 8 a few years ago.

Facilities are great for fans and revenue, however Coaching is much more important in getting W's.

  17. Did anybody else catch the end of the I-AA semi-final game between Texas State and Northern Iowa last night? With the score tied at 37, Texas State got the ball at its own 25 with 1:17 to go, with the wind, playing at home, and with all three timeouts remaining. Their offense had obviously done quite well to that point, having scored 37 points. Instead of trying to get into field goal range for the potential game-winning points, their coach elected to take a knee three times and play for overtime. The home crowd and many of the Texas State players were apparently in disbelief that he wouldn't even try to go for the win under those circumstances. Of course, Northern Iowa then went on to win in overtime. This was one of the strangest coaching decisions I've ever seen.

Missed the game (I was stuck in an airport) but the fans/players seemed to be pretty upset at the decision,

there is a ~600 post thread on the game if you want to gauge other fan reaction (some light reading ;) )

  18. As far as the SOS index goes for playoffs, which is based on a 1-14 point scale with 14 being the most you can get, here is what UND would get for playing the Bison:

If they beat the Bison, they would get 4 points

If they lost to the Bison, they would get 1 point (the lowest possible) :glare:

Duluth got 9 points for losing to Northern Iowa (automatic qualifying conference).

UND got 14 points (most possible) for beating Winona State. HUGE WIN.

UND got 13 points for the win over West Chester.

Hard to believe that Lennon doesn't want to play NDSU.

    Any questions?

UND would get as many points for playing NDSU as they would for playing UNI.
