  1. The increased fund raising is key to many of the new initiatives UND would like to try. Not yet included in the draft is a wish list of sorts of initiatives and goals UND would like to pursue.

They include new, and in some cases expensive, academic programs such as aeronautical engineering, an atmospheric science partnership with NASA, dentistry and veterinary science.

isn't that a "cow college" program?

  2. at 6'8 250, he would be a nice target at TE. I agree that he could still get a full for BB at either UND or NDSU. Also, I think NDSU still has around 2-3 FB scholies, Bohl said they were at 60 after signing day, and that he was holding on to a few in case they had a chance at impact transfers.

  3. Tyler Koenig is leaving the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay basketball program for an unknown destination......

Wisconsin-Green Bay coach Tod Kowalczyk told the Green Bay Press-Gazette newspaper he wouldn

  4. The Koenig rumor regarding his transfer out of UW-Green Bay appears to be more than a rumor this year.  He will likely get his release within the next few days.

Both UND and NDSU are interested in him.  Obviously, he could play right away and play for "something" for the next two years at UND as opposed to sitting out a year at SU.  I have no idea but I would guess that he will end up at one of the ND schools.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Koenig has good personal relationships with coaches at both schools, it will be interesting to see what happens with him. He could either have a chance to play right away at UND, with the possibility of playoffs, or he could redshirt at NDSU and have two more years against DI competition with a chance to "prove himself".

Good luck to him either way :D

  5. I'm sure there are people on this site who know far more than I do about the finances of the UND athletic department, but I have a hard time believing that the $400k deficit takes into account all the REA revenue that supposedly goes back to UND. The reason being is that if such a deficit exists, why haven't we seen anything about it in the local media (Grand Forks or Fargo), and why haven't there been any apparent ramifications in terms of talk of dropping a sport or a big fund-raising campaign? Plus, would there really have been any talk of going dI by people like Rich Glas and Dale Lennon if the finances were so dire? Something about this just doesn't add up.  In any event, comparing the UND athletic department finances to NDSU or really any other school is an apples-to-oranges comparison so long as REA is a completely separate entity from UND.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It has been posted (by somebody who has regular contact with RT) that UND has gotten something like 40-60k from REA the last few years, and also that UND is "charged" to use the Betty. Also, if REA is pumping so much money into the UND AD, I doubt they would be using tuition waivers for women's hockey.

As far as it making the news, the Herald would be the obvious choice for the story, but I doubt that is going to happen. The Forum would also be a possibility (they did run a story on NDSU's AD budget deficit projections), but is probably wary of being perceived as anti-UND by alums in Fargo. When Montana had their one year, 900k deficit it was all over the Montana news, and the AD was pushed out. Is it any coincidence that RT is leaving after these deficits?

  6. 1. I had one come back at me. NDSU's numbers for this year aren't in yet. You'd hate to have that come back at you. ???

    2. PS - How do you go "L, L, L, W, W" at a tournament and win it? What format is that?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    1. I doubt any deficit will be larger than 400k. Even IF it were- we would know where the money is going (scholies/travel etc). The question I have is where is all the money pouring into the Ralph going (10k fans 20X a year-plus mucho liquor sales). It would appear not to be the UND AD.

    2. Pool play followed by bracket play- you gotta win when it counts ;) I was actually prety shocked the SB team lost their first few games, probably had something do with it it being their first DI games and also the other teams had already played a handful of games.

  7. Higher TV ratings.

Revenue positive championship for the NCAA.

    Each has its merits.

What you chose not to address is this:

Sure wrestling is taken care of, but why not deal with items that could be revenue positive for the budget (like star2city mentions)? For example, the BESC for volleyball is a facility many DI programs would envy and volleyball has that potential for fan interest.

PS - How'd Bison softball do against BU, UCF, and Longwood this season?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Why how nice of you to ask :silly:North Dakota State Defeats Boston University 6-1 to Claim UCF Softball Tournament Title

ORLANDO, Fla.--Allison Bakke fired a one-hitter and Heather Hyatt went 3-for-4 to lead North Dakota State University to a 6-1 victory over Boston University on Sunday, Feb. 20, to claim the UCF Softball Tournament championship during its first weekend of NCAA Division I competition.

I think we all know NDSU needs a new BB/VB arena. However despite having to toil in the BBF, NDSU was normally at or near the top of VB attendance and very competitive. UNI (a mid-major VB power) plays in a "hole" as well and they draw 1500 a game. As much as facilities help- they are not the panacea some would make them out to be. UND has wonderful facilities- yet continues to generate 400k budget deficits at the D2 level

  8. Even though football players may have been good sprinters in H.S. they usually are not good sprinters in college, simply because they play football. Usually, they end up putting on 10-20 lbs for football, and they completely lose their sprinting speed. It's really a shame that football ruins so much track talent. I hope they don't do it to chappell...he could be a national contender in the 400M hurdles if football doesn't mess him up...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Football players can be successful at both track and football. Locally - NDSU's 4X4 (which has 3 football players on it) has a legit chance at a DI qualifying time. Also Schools like Florida, Miami, Auburn etc routinely have athletes do both.

  9. O.K., I retract the wrestling part. :blush::sad:

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    4X400 relay results

I also may argue that track will be competitive. (with a pretty nice, relatively new outdoor track, and decent indoor facility) the 4X4 relay did pretty good last weekend at the Iowa St Classic- the only teams that beat them ran DI qualifying times.

And by comparing the performances (times/distances etc) NDSU had at the NCC meet to other conference meets, NDSU team LAST YEAR- would have won the Big Sky, Mid-Con, and Missouri Valley conferences.

Softball also has a nice, new facility, and should compete quite well in DI (they have wins over Iowa St, Nebraska etc already)

  10. For NDSU, the two sports outside football that NDSU can most reasonably expect to be highly competitive (in top 20% of DI) are wrestling and women's basketball.  But yet no facility improvement have been made for those sports with DI in mind.

The McCormick Wrestling Complex was completely renovated in 2000 with funding from longtime NDSU booster John L. McCormick. One of the premier wrestling practice facilities in the country, it offers 6,300 square feet of space including a cardiovascular training room and a team lounge with video equipment. The cardio room is equipped with cross trainers, a treadmill, exercise bikes, weights and television. The video room features state-of-the-art equipment, computers, stereo, television and meeting room capabilities.

I have been in Iowa State's wrestling room (perennial top 5 team), and NDSU's is better.

  11. Not sure if you are just trolling for suckers, but the interlocking "ND"  was North Dakota's first...Notre Dame can change their logo, maybe something with a leprechaun on it...:0

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Notre Dame's attempt to preserve its image sends a message to potential offenders: Hands off. Regulating legal use of its logos doesn't just make the University look good; it also protects its exclusive rights to Notre Dame images. The University has about two dozen trademark rights on symbols, including the interlocking `ND,' the leprechaun mascot, the University seal.

15.5.6 Ice Hockey Limitations. There shall be an annual limit of 18 on the value of financial aid awards (equivalencies) to counters and an annual limit of 30 on the total number of counters in the sport of ice hockey at each ice hockey institution. (Adopted: 1/16/93 effective 8/1/93)

  13. I don't know much other than the fact that I don't know much.

This said, I do believe that this is an NCAA "governor" on a new program, not part of any business plan.  Can't have the new kids growing too fast, too quickly, and beating up on the old sisters.

NDSWho is facing the same "step increases" as it moves to DI, albeit miserably so.

I am sure that the Sioux would ramp up the womens' scholarship offers now, but for the NCAA and its idiosyncratic and oftentimes archane rules.

Sioux will be a womens' powerhouse as soon as they are allowed to do so.  Rivard, and The Ralph, not to mention the great education, will be sure to draw recruits from the top shelf.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

A school can add 50 scholarships a year total for men's and women's sports. (NDSU added about 20 to FB, maxed out men's BB/women's BB and a few other women's sports) There are no NCAA rules telling UND they cannot fully fund women's hockey. They are probably waiting until they raise they money as the UND AD is currently use tuition waivers to "fund" women's hockey.

  14. An assistant AD from Stanford (Ray Purpur) applied as well:

    - he grew up in Grand Forks

    - graduated from UND

    - and he is a relative of a guy named Clifford "Fido" Purpur.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Has it been confirmed that he applied, didn't the herald article said he "planned on" applying...

  15. ATHLETICS: Several apply for UND AD

Stanford's Purpur says he will seek position

    By Kevin Fee

    Herald Staff Writer

At least a dozen people, including an associate athletic director at NCAA Division I Oregon State, have applied for the UND athletic director position.

Kevin Price has been an associate athletic director in charge of compliance at Oregon State since 2002.

The UND athletic director position opened when Roger Thomas announced he will be leaving later this month to take the North Central Conference commissioner position.

Among others who have applied include Chris Gage, athletic director at the University of Texas at Dallas: Greg Hinze, assistant athletic director for marketing and operations at Sam Houston State of Texas; Michael Cancilla, athletic director at the University of Montevallo in Alabama; Darrell Orand, associate athletic director at Dakota Wesleyan in South Dakota; and James Jackson Jr., athletic director at Pratt (Kansas) Community College.

  16. Add a sport with some-teen additional grants for women and that fits within the existing structure and mindset of the school so as to ensure Title IX compliance down the road? Interesting concept, but it doesn't sound cheap.

The way it could get better is if it had the potential to have some, any, level of payback at the turnstiles, like if you could play Big Ten schools, say Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Ohio State, in the sport.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The forum article said NDSU was going to Max out all women's sports while fully funding the mens "revenue sports" (I am assuming, FB, BB, WR, Baseball)

also as far as hockey adding revenue,

Ohio State LOST 700k on MEN's hockey alone

At universities like Ohio State, the football team can make up for financial losses incurred by nonrevenue sports. Two seasons ago, OSU spent $349,195 on men's volleyball, which produced $37,594 in revenue. Also that season, ice hockey
  17. LA Times? Very nice for Fargo.

Did Fargo get featured in media in Canada, Sweden, Finland, Slovakia, Germany, Russia, the Czech Republic, Belarus, and Switzerland recently for hosting an international ice hockey tournament? No, wait, that was Grand Forks.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That's great for GF, my favorite quote from the World Juniors was

Yes, everything you hear about the palatial Ralph Engelstad Arena is true, it's that beautiful. Now, can the fine folks of Grand Forks -- obviously very proud of their rink -- stop asking if we think it's great.
