  1. Flickertails.

Nickname for the state.  Hate on it as much as you want.  Former nickname for teh Flagship as well.  Unique....which apparently is a big deal to the UND fans who compensate for personal shortcomings by having big trucks.

i've never seen more lifted chevy pickups with modified pipes than the one time i strolled across the ndac's non-descript campus before a bball game years ago...

  2. Hooker looks a lot leaner this year than last. I liked the way he attacked the rim and I think he's due for a breakout. I too like Coleman a lot. I wish Cashman would have looked for his offensive game a little bit more. He's really our only hope for a big until Shanks is eligible. Also, I heard that Stefan is academically ineligible and needs to do a lot of work before he has a chance to return. De Rouen looks like a real competitor but had a tough time with fouls. Although I said they looked bad, I am truly excited to see this team this year with all the new faces.

wouldn't they just say that stefan is academically suspended instead of the vague "breaking university somthing"...this is the third school for the young guy...?

de rouen is gonna be a defensive nightmare for the big sky this year..very very quick...can't wait to see tyler and him play together...

  3. Is a scrolling banner at the bottom of video boards possible? ala ESPN?

i think they can split it up any way they want...out of town scores are not really needed now with smartphones...in two seconds i can find out the limpscomb versus niagra game if i want much less other big sky games...ill admit the screens are very very nice and impressive but they just aren't being used the well but with the alerus that can be expected.

  4. i have always thought a visible sign stating how much they want to raise with a "thermometer" type thing that would be colored in when a certain amount was reached was need for the ipf site...i still think that a sign like this near the construction site would be nice to show how much has been raised and how much more they need would need to finish (and finish it correctly not half assed) be nice?

  5. No matter what name is chosen there will be reasons to hate it - I still like the thought of finding something regionally linked. Someone suggested this name to me:

    Nordic Warriors

    Fighting Norse

Of course you can easily trash any name that is suggested but it's just another possibility linked to the Scandinavian culture of the area,

    done...

  6. Anyone know anything about NAU's #66 climbing into the stands after the game and going after some fans?

i was in 217 and don't leave til the band plays the fifth quarter and there was anything going on the south end where nau comes and goes...

  7. That game didn't start until 2:00 Central. They should list the starting time instead of 1st Quarter.

i was just pointing out how stupid the video boards are at the alerus... a static alerus logo, a static und logo, and out of date out of town scores...maybe just go full screen and wow the taxpayers with 100 percent of the board????

  8. even with a slimmed down offense play chart i saw enough of studsrud to say he's the guy going forward...he just looks like a qb...i've seen people here all him danny freund 2.0...i would add in a little k klosterman too...fun game and the small crowd was treated to a great game...

gotta love those out of town scores on the new million dollar scoreboard....i think southern utah's game against montana stayed in the first quarter for about three hours!!!

  9. anyone know more about the man/woman that actually has a background in branding and whatnot...hope that person has a larger say in what happens on this committee...whatever name and logo is chosen needs to make und $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$...not make kids smile and feel happy

  10. I'm wondering if it isn't the almost 12,000 seat arena next door.  Not a fan of it but could very well be what the plan is (scheduling issues aside).

    rea-mens and womens hockey

    betty-volleyball

    hyslop-mens and womens bball

ipf-track and field, with soccer&football practicing as needed

    memorial revo/new-football

new soccer/lacrosse/t&f field north of ipf

    wellness center-swimming adn diving

    ray richards-golf

    baseball-drop

wishful thinking but doable if faison hits up alumni with money...chipman, fennell, phil, and gfhockey's posse...

  11. UND hasn't paid for land for any of the new projects for years.  The land where the REA is and the new med school was all donated many years ago.  It has been quite a while since they bought the property where the Aviation building is going up and where the Center for Innovation is located.  You need to hire an architect whether you are building a new building or doing a major remodeling project on an existing building.  Asbestos and lead abatement are definitely a significant cost.  But many times it is cheaper to tear down a building and replace it than remodel.  That's why you see McDonalds and other companies tear down existing buildings and start over rather than just remodel.  It takes a lot more time to work around the constraints of a current structure than it does to get rid of it and build something new.  That time adds up.  If cost is going to be one of the major deciding factors, then they will replace rather than remodel in many cases.

i don't disagree with you on most of this other than you comparing hyslop to a crappy big box fast food joint like mcdonalds....

  12. The booster money behind those schools is in a completely different universe than what UND deals with.

why would boosters have to pay for a state facility to be up to state codes in terms of saftey to the fans?? seems odd to me...

also seems like fuzzy math when you compare asbestos and lead abatement on a historical and structurally safte building instead of acquiring land, architects to design a new building, and then the cost of buildinga comparable building?  seems like one would be a better option cost wise but when the gf/und gogc get going you seem to see the same architect, contractors, and whatnot salivating about new better projects around town...

  13. The first message I wrote is how they achieve the goal I described in the second message.  They set up a logical explanation to give to the public in advance so that when the decision is made, there isn't as much backlash.  It's PR 101 and all large organizations (public and private) practice it all the time.  That is why I am so adamant about not always accepting every "official" statement at face value.  Often times, there is more than meets the eye.

what i don't get about the asbestos/lead paint theory is that you would have to believe that similar buildings built in the same time frame like cameron, williams, or allen fieldhouse never had lead paint and or asbestos in it ever???

  14. I don't make the claim that UND or Hak has had bad luck in the Frozen Fours, certainly not any more or less than anyone else.

My take on those Frozen Fours is this.

In 2005 (Denver) and 2014 (Minnesota) I thought Hak did a masterful job of preparing his team to play a superior opponent.  In both instances I thought UND outplayed the opponent, but they didn't win.  That happens.

In 2011 I thought we were the best team, and were clearly better than Michigan.  But again, I have no complaint about how the team performed or how the staff prepared them.

I thought in 2007 and in 2008 we were probably pretty evenly matched against our opponents, but I don't think the UND staff did as good a job getting the team ready to play.  We had a great team in 2006, but they simply made too many mistakes in that game.

No question it's been disappointing UND hasn't won a title since 2000.  There are a lot of people, myself included, who think UND's best team during that timeframe was the 2003-04 team coached by Blais that also failed to win a title.

But the reasons I cut Hak some slack are these.  First, his teams have always been "in the hunt."  That is, there has not been a time where we didn't make the tournament, and furthermore weren't considered one of the few dangerous teams left in that tournament, while he has been coach.

Second, I think he is as good as anyone in developing a team over the course of a season.  To take a group of individuals and make them perform at a higher level as a team, not just a collection of individuals.

Third, I think he gets a lot out of each player.  UND has always had very talented players come through the program, but let's be candid.  The talent level that we see now as compared with the years of Parise, Toews, Oshie, etc..., is not the same.  But he is able to take late additions like Gaarder, Pattyn, etc..., and turn them into useful team players.

Fourth, Hak has had some obstacles that have come up during his tenure that were more substantial than what either Blais or Gasparini dealt with, most not of his doing.  Some late season defections of very talented commits, the top rated freshman bolting last year mid-season, some key injuries to guys like Toews, Genoway, Grimaldi, Kristo, O'Donnell, Gregoire.  Every coach has to deal with those things.  But they certainly make it less likely all the pieces come together for a title.

    REALLY? ??? REALLY!!!!!!!!!

I bet Matt Greene, Rastivslav Spirko, Brady Murray, Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford, Chris Porter, Matt Smaby, and Colby Genoway would disagree with line?

  15. what kind of bugs me about some of the ad's that have come and gone over the years is where is the long term planning on facility improvements? ???

    alerus-city paid

    rea-ralph paid

    betty-ralph paid

    kraft field-city/park board paid?

    choice-city/park board paid

    apollo-city/park board paid

i don't think that und has paid anthing towards any of these building? so why don't we have some money somewhere set aside for future facilities?  you would think in say 1965 that someone knew that somewhere down the line that memorial stadium was starting to show age so maybe set aside some revenue from home games for the next fourty years to fund a new football stadium?

i still wonder how much cash rea is hiding in the "las vegas" room in the basement of the ralph...to the detriment of other programs imo (not hockey of course).

  16. Like to see a Phil Jackson Arena on campus.  Hyslop would have been turned into a Wellness Center if it wasn't for asbestos.

Originally the Betty was only going to be a practice facility, volleyball, and for lesser games.  That way the REA trust took away basketball as a source of revenue.

A new football stadium on campus is the first priority once Phase II of the IPF gets built (other than a new locker room for men's hockey).

i totally agree with your list of priorities...phase two of indoor and then getting chipman and fennell to cut some checks and rea trust to step up with some cash for an on campus fb stadium...i just hope that some or all of these old buildings on campus that are not being used currently are not torn down bc you never get them back...i know it would be alot of money to totally reno hyslop but you can do it in phases. that whole front of the building could be offices for bball coaches, weight rooms, meeting rooms, locker rooms....

  17. in the future i hope the bball teams move back to a renovated hyslop and give the betty to the vball program (and keep growing vball...sky's the limit)

with the new indoor practice facility being built a lot of the uses for the hyslop will be down to next to nothing so the whole thing could be bball from top to bottom...

i'm not sure if in the long run swimming and diving would ever move the wellness center if/when they put a pool in there but it they do if would be nice to tear down that crappy add on behind the original building and brought it back to what it looked like in the 50's....but a total gut job on the inside and bring back the hyslop hysteria!!!

    Fieldhouse_1951___Aireal_View.jpg

and make the inside look a lot like this but more green instead of blue

  18. Not going to lie, this has been a sore spot for me for many years.   The Betty should have been 1. Dug down,  so that you can walk down into your seats (bowl type setting). If you look at traffic on game day of fans getting to and from seats you'll notice it's a mess. 2. Had video boards...at the very least at each end.  3.and a LED/LCD table.   The reality is that these are missed revenue source opportunities for the department/REA/and the programs.    What are we trying to be?  Division 1? One of the top facilities within our conference?  That is a legitimate question.  That's awesome that hockey gets new "state of the art" locker rooms.   But why not look to where there is still a ton of room to grow both competitively and revenue wise in athletics.  I believe that's in the sports that operate in The Betty.   But to be quite honest I'm not seeing a lot going on there, except for the addition of a storage shed...can a business sponsor that and get exposure to fans- like it can with Video Boards or LED table.

biggest reason why the Betty was done half-assed was bc ralph was dead....if ralph was alive he would have done it right the first time.
