    Nice assumption, wrong but ok.

Not saying you specifically, but there are plenty of Bison fans that would love to see UND fold there football program altogether. Look no further than Bisonville, where they clearly state they do not want UND to be a football school.

Is it really so bad excelling at hockey and being just ok with football?

Pick one and do it the best?

Its not terrible that North Dakota has a great football school and a great hockey school IMO.

Nah, I think that is kind of lame. You should strive to be strong in all programs. I don't care to settle for mediocrity. That seems to be the common cry from NDSU fans, which makes sense, they don't want another strong football program in the state. Things are going just fine the way they are for them and they have enough competition regionally with SDSU, wouldn't want someone else stepping in.

It’s standard place for football to receive the major donations in terms of collegiate athletics in the U.S.A.

It is NOT commonplace for hockey to receive the major donations.

Public opinion matters because that is what fills the seats.

UND and greater GF region consistently fills the REA, but regionally and nationally speaking, UND has become more and more irrelevant of late in other sports because they aren’t funded (nor focused on) at the level needed to excel. It’s not all just about filling up the REA, which many are content with cause that is done year after year, but it’s about pushing the brand forward regionally and nationally. That will increase enrollment, recruiting, and further perpetuate success. Football and basketball are far more popular nationally than hockey, so those other sports absolutely matter.

So to answer your question, yes; a $100M gift to UND football would do wonders for UND athletics as a whole, but that surprises no one. You get what you pay for.

I love how blatant and obvious your hypocrisy is. Just to clarify, its ok for football to receive a big donation, but not for hockey to. So what would your suggestion have been to the school; turn down the REA donation? Thanks, but no thanks? Would you have cared if this was for track and field? or golf? Or is this once again just your hatred of hockey shining through.

Sorry, I just get sick of reading your nonsense, it equates to a kid throwing a tantrum because something isn't fair. Lets call it what it is ... jealousy. Which I totally understand. When someone has something really nice, why wouldn't you want the same. I'd love for football to have the same caliber of facilities as hockey, but unless you've got another extremely wealthy donor ready to put their name on a building the conversation is moot. Hockey got the money because Ralph was a hockey guy. Pretty clear that when someone specifies what their donation is for you can't just divert their funds to something else.

Also worth noting that even if Football had all the donations in the world, it wouldn't necessarily flip a switch and make UND a dominant program (it would certainly help). We still have NDSU in our backyard and they will still win recruiting battles because they win on the field. Obviously money and facilities help; I'd never deny that. Though lets also look back at hockey. We had plenty of high end players before the REA was built, and we've missed on plenty of high end players since the arena was built. Plenty of other factors.

“Ralph Engelstad Arena, a $110 million gift from her father to the university, was completed in 2001 as the new home to UND hockey. The arena, contracted to be turned over to UND in 2030, was just one topic of many discussed in a wide-ranging interview between McGarry and Forum News Service. McGarry requested the meeting.”

“According to her, Kennedy characterized the arrangement made between the university and her father, Ralph, as written to the benefit of the donor at the expense of UND.

“(He said) my dad made a bad deal when he first gave them this gift,” she said, a comment Kennedy said he doesn’t recall saying.

The school eventually retired the Sioux name and logo at the behest of the NCAA and now officially uses the Fighting Hawks nickname for its athletic teams. But the Sioux logo still remains in the Ralph, embedded in marble floors, and on seats and other fixtures.

Because of that, McGarry said, Kennedy has accused the family of “creating brand confusion” for the school, a charge she views as unfair.

In 2018 and 2019, Engelstad spoke publicly about her strained relationship with Mark Kennedy, who at the time was UND's president. The Herald reported in 2019 that Engelstad said the foundation wouldn’t give direct funds to the university until Kennedy was no longer president, though it continued to support student scholarships and the hockey program. Kennedy left UND in May 2019.

Kennedy was right. He knew what needed to be done to right the ship and help out football, and quite frankly make funding fair, but he was ousted due to public outcry, stirred up by Engelstad. When called out, though, they would still fund hockey, just nothing else, which is basically the current arrangement now that all is good again for the hockey moguls. You think the Engelstads walk on water too, I see. You’re easily convinced, but that’s no surprise. And I don’t find my desire to improve UND football hilarious, but thanks for posting your opinion, @siouxfan512. And as for numb comments by @jdub27, you think it’s a coincidence Kennedy left for Colorado in 2019? That’s the real hilarious piece in all of this. Ha! Ha! Ha! Why don’t you read up on some facts and get back to us. Thanks. Easily manipulated like the majority of GF was back in 2018-19 … shame, shame, shame.

So, if we received a $100M gift for football tomorrow (Stadium, Uniforms, NIL funds, practice facilities, etc.), would you be complaining about how it puts the football program on a pedestal and isn't fair to the basketball or volleyball program? or golf, or whatever?

… money talks, and gf and the und community still think the Engelstads walk on water

The amount of hate you have for the Engelstads is hilarious. I'm not saying they should call all the shots with UND or UND athletics, but how can anyone fault a family that is going to give UND such a generous gift and such a boost to a program.

Had they given that to UND football you wouldn't shut up about how amazing they are. Lets just call it was it is, you're not happy because someone gave their money somewhere that they want, rather than somewhere you want. Feel free to pony up $100M to the football program. C'mon, have a filthy rich casino owner donate an arena to the caliber of the REA is unusual anywhere in the college sports world, but its pretty awesome to have a facility like that on campus. In a perfect world we would get an on campus football stadium to match it, but it just isn't realistic.

Great kid that looks the part… but this one is a head scratcher if you have watched him play.

Could you elaborate for those of us who haven't seen him play? Head scratcher because he isn't D1 talent? Because he is a better basketball player? Because it is only his first offer?

We can agree to disagree. You’re just repeating your same old argument, also, which I adamantly disagree with.

At the FCS level, you’re not going to have a lucrative funding model with a bunch of revenue. That’s reserved for FBS football with large stadiums. Bottom line, collegiate athletics requires major investment/funding to begin with, and is not typically a huge return on the investment, especially in ND. Large football and basketball programs certainly do produce a lot of revenue for the NCAA and their respective institutions, no question, but those programs aren’t in North Dakota. Hockey has a return because there was a huge investment in the form of a gift from the Engelstads. It would only be a surprise if an $100M gift *did not* produce some revenue.

So, you'd rather cut your nose to spite your face. We can always disagree, but I don't understand how taking away from your source of income is a smart long-term plan. I suppose it depends how much fund diversions you are talking about, but the bottom line is you also have to support your cash cow. The cash cow doesn't produce, you can forget football and plenty of other sports.

Hockey has a return because of historic success and a regional interest in hockey. Are you trying to tell me there was no interest prior to the Engelstad investment? If football wants more funds, it should come from generating new interest with donations. We have plenty of wealthy alumni and it is hard to imagine we can put some sort of funding together.

Again, I would absolutely love to see football get some more help and funding ... but I don't hate hockey the way you do. There is room for more than one program on campus and done correctly maybe they can both generate revenue.

UND with greater revenue than NDSU, yet the two football programs are on completely different levels. Again, my previous post holds true. UND and UND athletics are not allocating nearly enough to football.  Remember, hockey hockey hockey, !@#$ !@#$ !@#$!

Right on cue with your same tired argument. You're correct, Football does need some additional funds, but comparing UND and NDSU purely based on funding isn't exactly accurate either. I'd be interested to know what NDSU's funding was prior to them going FCS and really taking off. Seemed like as they found success they continued pumping money in.

Worth remembering that while hockey gets a ton of funding, they also bring in the majority of the revenue. You don't fund it and your program takes a set back, your revenue source struggles. Football needs more funding, but also needs to find success on the field, put butts in seats, get people in apparel and generate additional revenue.

132 and 124 in US News. Neither are particularity high ranking schools so neither are worth bragging.

This conversation comes up all too often. UND isn't ivy league and MSU (amongst other schools discussed on this board) is not a small time community college. They are 100% in the same conversation (big picture).

Nothing wrong with the green jerseys that we have, just need readable numbers.  Leave the helmets as is.  White pants.   Tradition!!

disagree, they are hideous. the shoulders and markings on the sides are way too busy. just a solid green is all that is needed.

Agreed. I like green jerseys, but ours our hideous. Lose the white and black on the shoulders and the sides and they would probably be fine.

To clarify, I did say I would still like to land the kid. Could end up being a stud, could end up being a dud; there is no way of knowing yet. Sure he went to Wisconsin, but he hardly proved himself there. Now, while there was no guarantee, I definitely get a little nervous about who is left out there and who we will get. Hopefully we find an impact player.

I will say that while I will temper expectations for this kid (though I'm absolutely hopeful) I do like that he has two years of eligibility left. If he were to end up being a key piece in the offense that would be great to get him for two years. I don't think anyone can underestimate how huge it would have been to have Hoosman back for one more year.

    Blake - Berg - Gaber

    Johannes - Jammer - Emerson

    Pyke - Pehrson
    Wiebe - Zmolek
    Benoit - Livanvage
    Komzak

Very disappointing if true. Though at least we seem to have some depth and talent at O-Line. Still a big loss though.

    * we had an incompetent offensive coordinator who had 3 ridiculously talented weapons on offense and he had only 1 on the field at a time for 85-90% of the time.

Absolutely, Rudy didn't help him out at all. JJ just never showed the flash that someone like Oliveira did, and I'll only compare those two because they were the heavier bruiser type backs. Oliveira seemed to have more speed and could drive forward with contact. I always felt like JJ was to vertical when he ran and couldn't get any leverage on guys. A guy that size you be pretty automatic in 3rd or 4th and 1 situation and just wasn't overly impressed. But to your point, he (along with the majority of that offense) was never utilized well.

So you're telling me you knew right away Hoosman was going to be that good when he came to UND? Wasn't he like third on the depth chart at UNI? I get there's not much on him but he did play for a Wisconsin. Anyone on an FBS roster is worth taking a look at and like everyone said we can trust Danny. If there were better options Danny would have went that direction. If this guy doesn't work out they will just have to look for another option but if he can do even a little of what Hoosman did I think he will be an asset ot the team.

Not at all! Unless they have been a proven commodity somewhere else, I think transfers in general are a crap shoot. Not saying I don't want to bring some in when needed. They clearly fill a need. Sometimes its depth, sometimes you are rolling the dice and taking a chance. Sometimes you hit a home run.

I'm just not ready to say that a transfer that a RB who ran the ball 13 times in 3 games for 90 yards last year would be a monster get. Now if the coaches feel he fits the style and is our best available option, then by all means, lets get him on campus and I hope he dominates. I would never call a kid a bust before he gets a chance to prove it, but I'm also not going to assume that a transfer will step in and dominate until we see it happen.

Heading into last season I was assuming that after losing Otis that Isaiah Smith was going to be the lead guy, well Hoosman stepped in an did a hell of a job, I don't think anyone was expecting that.

As for anyone on an FBS roster, I think history has shown there are plenty of FBS dropdowns that never make an impact at the FCS level. There is a reason many of them are dropping down. Not saying this is a rule, but if I've learned anything over the years of following the program it is to temper expectations with the FBS dropdowns and transfers in general. You may get lucky with a guy like Braden Hanson or Alex Tillman, even McNaboe, but they don't all turn out that way. Oscar Nevermann never turned into a major impact play. James Johannessen wasn't bad but certainly didn't live up to the hype. Can't recall the guys name, but there was a defensive lineman (I think) who transferred from the Gophers who never did much either.

Like I said, I'm not opposed to it as long as it isn't the Petrino approach. I'd just prefer to temper expectations until they get into practice and show how they work with the team and the system. I'd be absolutely pumped if Julius Davis happend to commit and then came in like Hoosman did; who wouldn't !?!?

Would it? Sure the guy is coming from Wisconsin, but when I tried to pull up the depth chart I didn't see him on it. I get it is Wisconsin and he is probably sitting behind some decent players but still. Looking at his career stats, I don't see anything that jumps out at me here. FBS dropdowns can be hit or miss like any other transfer. Obviously it would be great if he committed and it worked out and maybe it will, but there is nothing that makes me think this would be a guy to fill Hoosman's shoes. The Northern Michigan kid seemed to have proven more, and that would have been a bit more exciting to me.

But who know, sometimes it is just the right kid, in the right place with the right offense.

Yes and the same crap went on that's going on now.  How many people wanted Hakstol fired because he couldn't win the big one?  This is a never ending cycle. The only way to solve this problem is to win a title every year.

People need to realize there are many good programs in the country and every one of them wants the same thing.  After 25 years of solid finishes and a few national titles and many conference titles there are bound to be a few down years.

Any suggestions from people on the sight as to they you would think would be a good pick to coach this team and reasons why that person is a good fit?

I'd only argue its probably (mostly) the same group of people constantly calling for the coach's job.

I never called for Hak to be fired, always liked watching his teams compete. He seemed to be able to get more with less at time. Seemed to also get some high end recruits.

Berry has also been able to get some high end recruits, though his pipeline seems a little less consistent. I'm not one to call for Berry's job, but I would definitely like to see a little more consistency with him and some more tourney appearances/success.
