Technically, most statistics would say otherwise.  Just sayin'...

I'm gonna end up regretting that I wrote this...sigh

Understood, and for the record I'm a Tommy fan. While he is killing it in stats, there are certainly some other intangibles I'd like to see. That is me trying to be more understanding of the critics. He has also had more playing time on the field than most get in their college career.

Ha, I used to. Don't really go there anymore unless I want to see something about recruiting. They have a few guys that follow recruiting and put out good information. We have plenty of senseless banter here as well, but it nothing compared to that cesspool.

as for the postives......i guess i depends on how long you've been a sioux fan and what your expectations are......my first game i remember is probably early 80's....started "knowing" football and whatnot late 80's....around 1990 asking my dad if we've always lost to the bison if the sioux suck?

then MMM happened!!!! then 10 years of dominance...went to first bizon sioux game in fargodome (1993 or so)...loved watching those fat cows leave early in at the time was a beautiful quonset to go home to their fat cows...

then bizons and jacks took their balls to fcs and we thought "they'll be back"....nope  ....five years later we "joined" them...for us..kinda (gwc/bsc)....

now 15 or so years into d1 we are as far away as competitive with as least sdac...soon to find out about the other ag school....as we've ever been .....where have those/these 15 years gotten us?

positives?  it's all relative depending on age  and expectations and history.

My first year at UND was '03. A good time to come to GF and enjoy some football. Beat the Bison and I got to travel to Alabama with the band for the Nat'l Championship. Obviously that is the level I'd like to see them back to. Deep playoff runs. Nat'l Championship appearances and wins.

I still think the entire landscape could have looked different had we gone D1 when NDSU did. Maybe it wouldn't, but I think we would have competed with them on the field and on the recruiting trail. It could look very different, but maybe not. None of that really matters at this point though.

I hope Jerry is the guy that can help get us there, I just don't think it is this year. I'm more concerned about our overall D. There are some guys and some flashes, but doesn't seem like enough overall talent and depth across the board. Maybe I'm wrong.

I'd say this team is certainly better than a few years back where we were constantly teetering on the edge of the polls, we seem to have somewhat solidified ourselves in the 10-15 spot recently, but have yet to take that next step. This would be a great weekend to do that. Essentially what USD did with their win over the Bison.

how is saying we have the best qb recruit (maybe even 2 of em) on campus in decades sitting behind what people are finally seeing as a "game manager" controversial to post on a message board....

I never said anything about controversial. I'm just saying you love to point out when Tommy makes a mistake. Or even when there is a completion, that it wasn't a good enough completion. Never see you posting screenshots or making comments about some of his good plays (and there are plenty of those too). Not saying he is the greatest of all time, so don't misinterpret me.

Lets also remember a QB recruit is nothing but potential until they get their shot. Tommy's play, while not perfect has hardly warranted a benching. My bigger fear with Jerry would be rushing him into play when he is not ready and wrecking that potential. Maybe he would step in and be an absolute stud, but I don't think anyone in this forum has enough first hand knowledge to make that call compared to the coaches. Still hoping he gets some reps in this year, and while I think Feeney has some great potential I'd love to see Jerry earn the spot over him next year. I know there is talk about Tommy wanting to stay next year which would be fine if the QB room was bare, but I do think there is something to letting the younger guys take over when they are ready. Which seems to be more of the discussion ... are they ready or not?

Of note, and very funny. Teh bysuns board does a little act where they pretend they don’t care about the UND by not posting about it which shows just how much they still care deep down. The syndrome is real with them. So pathetic.

Its hilarious; they are such an angry bunch. They used to at least talk a little football over there. Now its all anger and they've scared off any of their halfway decent fans. They're mad they are not FBS. They're mad UND has a football team. They're mad they have to play us. Now they're mad that they have a program that is just a bit down (and still damn good) after a decade plus.

Our hockey fans (including myself) get really frustrated when we aren't as dominant as we should be, but those guys on bozoville are next level.

posts like these are why nobody takes you seriously on here.

please elaborate. Any maybe "taking you seriously" was a poor choice of words, but you tend to get a lot of combative posts. Maybe its because you give the same criticisms over and over but never recognize when there are positives. It comes across as more of a personal vendetta rather than a player or game analysis.

This is the worst NDSU team since 2009, but for whatever reason I’m still not confident. I hope I’m wrong but I haven’t seen a killer instinct from our program in a long long time.

Unless we are extremely good and they are extremely bad, I don't see a reason for confidence until we have actually beaten them. Hopefully, sure .... but we've played 2 big games this year and shown we are not up for the task. This is a big game and while they are not Boise or SDSU, i don't trust our team or coaches yet. Hoping for a W and to use this as a springboard for the rest of the season.

ishai smith's broken ankle from tommy's laser beam in the drake game says otherwise (probably half the distance of the nate d throw and would've been a walk in 6)....and we missed the fg after that

can't happen against ndac...but probably will.

    day by day

I've seen Mahomes miss some passes over the past few weeks as well. I've been saying it for years ... from the seat of my schwinn ... the guy is hot trash and should be replaced. Not really sure why he is in the league.

Obviously I'm being facetious, but you're a tad overkill in your criticisms as well, which is why nobody takes you seriously on here. Yes, Tommy has missed some throws (probably more than we have seen over the past few years), I also think they are asking him to do a little more, which they should. You've made a habit of highlighting the few bad throws that he has made and none of the good ones. It would be ludicrous to say he hasn't made any great team plays this year, and I don't give a flying F if that is with his arm or feet or whatever.

Bottom line, he isn't perfect but failures aren't only on him. Boise was the first really bad game I've seen him play. The scheme and preparation for SDSU was atrocious (Trying to run Q anywhere but 2 yards up the gut is a terrible idea). Coaches seem to outcoach themselves in big games and have done so for a while.

Now Jerry may be able to throw the ball a mile and throw a bullet, I don't know. But can he consistently throw with accuracy? Can he quickly identify when it is safe to throw the ball into coverage and give his WR a chance? I only ask this because, lets say we flip the QB and Jerry throws for 400 yards but has 3 INT in a game, we haven't exactly stepped in the right direction either. I'm really excited to see what the kid brings to this program, but I don't think we can state with certainty he is ready to do that. I think it is also fairly clear that even if Tommy got pulled, Trey will be the guy ... though I would really like to see Jerry get some reps this season, maybe a quarter or even a half against Indiana St or Murray St?

All arguments and opinion aside .... whoever is lined up under center this week (Tommy) lets just go get a win! That's what we all want and that's what UND football needs. 4-2 with losses to Boise and SDSU and a win over NDSU would not look too bad. Only problem is that they lost to USD and now if they lose to us it will be more about how they are having a bad year, rather than us having a good one, but I'll still take the W.

Based on my conversations with my SU buddies in the FM area this is the least talented NDSU team in a decade. Can't blow this opportunity especially at home.

And I'm sure the nasty SU fans will want a win more now than ever. They love to throw out how we can't even beat them on down years.

You know what's fun?  Lining up across from your opponent and kicking their you know what until the whistle...then getting up and doing it again.  When they start to adjust you hit them on the edges or over the top.  Always staying one step ahead and imposing your will.  Over-reliance on trick plays is for teams that aren't as talented as their opponent.

It doesn't matter if we do it in the I formation with 22 personnel or some shotgun formation spreading the field...at some level football is football!  I love the inside zone running game we seem to be having some success with using Ziebarth and Skokna to spell...if you can get 4-5 yards a pop running that...then lean on it!

Agreed, I believe I said, you can't make a living off of trick plays.

But you can't also tell me you aren't entertained when they work. No, I'd rather run the ball down their throat, just hope our O line is ready to move some people.

  11. 2 minutes ago, Sioux94 said:

I would sure as heck hope we could beat that at a minimum. But thinking SDSU is probably good for at least 2 more explosive plays than us, meaning like 40-50 plus type plays that lead to TD's.....and at their place I can see why it's starting at this. Sure would be nice for us to get an explosive offense play instead of having to dink and dunk a 10 play drive for TD's.

We need to make some big plays, and limit theirs to flip the script!

Explosive plays are great, but I do feel like you need to win the clock battle here. Keep there offense on the sideline.

The trick plays are cool when they work, but I'd like to see Danny not try to get too cute this game and just run what is working. Don't overthink things or make it more complicated than it needs to be in big games.

Totally agreed. Can't make a living off of trick plays.

There are other wrinkles I'd like to see. Utilizing some of our tools based on their defense and if something works stick with it. Do we go heavy with the screen game? Utilize TE's more? Dink and Dunk everything within 15 yards to move the chains and win the clock battle?

I do hope there are a few trick plays to keep it entertaining, but they have to be opportunistic and called at the right times.

Sample size isn’t huge, 6 games. Facts are still facts. Nothing imaginary about records / stats / facts. You’re justifying mediocrity again. Team needs to put up or shut up. Haven’t done it with Bubba. This isn’t DII anymore. Can’t just win in front of 5k-10k crowds and get to the next tier. Need to win big games.

beat Montana State in 2016 in front of 19507 fans by score of 17-15

    … since …

    2017 L 16-37 @ Utah

    2018 L 17-41 @ Montana

    2019 L 7-38 @ NDSU

    2021 L 24-48 @ Utah State

    2022 L 17-38 @ Nebraska

    2023 L 18-42 @ Boise State

A lot more loses at Alerus Center against FCS teams in attendance range of 10-12k (can’t ever seem to sell the place out unless NDSU comes to town). UND is approximately 0.500 since 2016 in games with attendance 10k+ if you exclude the games above. You can spin it anyway you want, but this staff/program has underperformed since 2016. 2017 was a fireable offense, and it hasn’t skyrocketed since.

*BUT* - beauty is can right the ship this weekend in Brookings.

FBS losses suck, because they are so flashy if you win. Those losses don't hurt as much as the close conference games. The NDSU and SDSU games from 2021 hurt bad, because we had very legit chances to close those games out and take the W. Winning in Brookings isn't easy and I'll be honest, its tough to have a lot of confidence after the game in Boise.

There weren't many positives in that game, but the silver lining is a lot of the issues we saw are not typical of this team. I get the gripe about Tommy's long ball, but the fumbles were uncharacteristic of his career. The D forced some turnovers, which was great to see and they need to keep that going.

Kicking has to be better, especially on XP. I get that the holder needs to figure out how to spin the ball, but we aren't talking about a 55 yard FG either. Shouldn't a college kicker be able to hit the XP even if the laces are in? Maybe it isn't dead straight, maybe it doesn't feel perfect coming off the foot, but should a kid with a strong leg that only kicks be able to muscle that through? That missed XP put us behind the 8 ball the entire game trying to claw back with 2 point conversions.

I am looking forward to seeing if there are some new wrinkles in the game plan. Do we bring out some of these freshman that are supposed to be playmakers? Does Danny open up the playbook a little more? Can we get a FG or punt block? So many questions heading into this one.

Find a way to compete and beat SDSU and you will see a very packed house in Grand Forks in a few weeks for a top 10 (possible top 5) matchup. I don't want the moral victory, but I get nervous we could be talking about how we played an awesome game in Brookings and just couldn't quite finish or match up. Bigger fear is a repeat of Boise.... maybe it is better that they fell apart in that game and can be better prepared coming out of the bye.

Regardless, after a long week off (one where I had no kid's sports on Saturday afternoon and actually could have watched the game), UND football is back!

Could you tell with Bohl when he was about to be !@#$ canned? People forget about his 6-5 and 3-8 seasons back to back.

But he sure knew how to push that Buffalo Chicken sub with Subway.

Does anyone else remember the Subway commercials with Bohl and Lennon leading up to rivalry week. Would have been 2003. What a great time to be a Freshman and what a great game. Heck, what a great season!

Sounds like a fair statement to me.

Agreed. It is a fair statement. Dom is using it as more of a setup to say UND is not in the top of the FCS, but there is still a fair point to be made.

Want to be compared to NDSU and SDSU, then we have to ask would they win this game against and 0-2 Boise St?

By no means does the 0-2 record mean Boise is a bad team. I think they will end up having a solid season, especially once they hit conference play, but the attitude should 100% be that we are going out their to get a win and build momentum heading to brookings.

did you see who Drake lost to?

so it would kill tom to just mention SOS in his piece? how many average fans know what the pioneer conference is?

That one really surprises me. I don't expect a ton from Drake, but that one still surprises me. Its not like the didn't show some flashes and potential with certain individuals.

Whatever ... I don't really care about Drake; lets just find a way to go take one from Boise. 3-0 and maybe everyone can be happy for at least a week. :)

I don't see the leaked helmets looking good with these jerseys. The two different colors of grey wouldn't go well together, in my opinion. Possibly green jerseys with grey pants the same color as the helmet?? Will be interesting to see what they do.

We definitely need new (better) greens.

Probably, though if you are going to spend the money on some new gear, it would be nice to see it a bit more often. Hope we see them at least a few times.

  19. Really looking forward to what Danny has planned for the offense against Boise. Assuming he has a few wrinkles in the mix whether it be plays or personnel. Could we see some new guys like Seidl or Tai make a splash, or will it just be some crazy trick plays.

This game will not make or break our season, but I would really like to see a competitive win and a springboard for SDSU. Go get em!

Thought Ocansey had a good game and seems to be improving.

Agreed! Several nice pass break ups. There were a number of plays in that game (Ocansey and a few others) where I said to my wife, "They don't make that play last year".

Not perfect and always want to keep improving, but definitely seeing some good things.
