  1. Solid night up and down the lineup

Really liked that James-Strinden-Caulfield combo tonight

much better emphasis on supporting the puck and making yourself available

Have to back it up with another win tomorrow. Can’t come in sleepwalking, set the tone for 60 more minutes of attacking

How did it get so bad?

It was really getting bad when Whalen took over but I just think people thought Whalen would automatically be a good coach because she was a great player and great leader but sometimes that just doesn't translate to a good coach.

NDSU just beat Minnesota. The summit league is going to be fun this year

Gopher women are really bad. I know Whalen has the great freshman class and their top one didn't play but they only have like 5-6 women capable of playing at the high D1 level. Not sure how much longer Lindsay sticks around could see the mutual parting at the end of this season for the good of the program.

At what point do NFL teams ditch the prevent defense and realize that giving up 15-20 yards a pop and letting them get out of bounds when a team has no timeouts just doesn’t work.  To the contrary, the other team even had plenty of time to win the game.  Bills should have learned the lesson in their playoff loss to KC, and yet teams continue to get burned with that philosophy.

To be fair that is Donatell's scheme most of the time which I can't stand.

This team showed a ton of toughness today. Offense made a ton of mistakes from KOC on down but overcame them, D came up with some big plays when they had to have them.

Need to be on the lookout for a kicker, 4 extra point misses already is a problem.

  5. Absolutely embarrassing performance. Constantly beat to every puck and just look so slow. Guys don’t want the puck and when they get it it seems to be a contest to see how quick you can just slap it away doesn’t matter where or who it goes to. Our primary breakout seems to be chipping it off the glass which is an absolute joke and our transition seems to be just flipping it forward although we struggle to get a decent flip. The best thing our defenseman do is provide screens on our goalie for the opponent.

It used to be you could tune in for Sioux hockey and you were gonna see some exciting, fast, skilled, physical hockey. You wouldn’t always see a win although you did more often than not but you’d at least get an enjoyable exciting game. Right now that isn’t the case at all this team isn’t showing any of those qualities. If you had to describe their game you’d say slow, soft, and sloppy. This team isn’t winning and definitely isn’t playing fun exciting hockey. It’s weird to not even really feel excitement when looking toward games but right now that’s the way this group has me feeling.

Right. That’s where I fear NIL + transfer portal could screw UND. What’s to stop the exponentially larger Michigan grad/booster population from paying a Kawaguchi/Gaber/4-year type player $500k for “appearances” through an NIL contract to transfer to Michigan their last year(s) of college …

And yeah, $500k is the logical extreme, but Minnesota’s highest paid athlete in 2021 was a wrestler who made his through an appearance.  Each scholarship Texas Longhorn lineman gets $50k a year for appearances. So I see where this is headed.

It’s almost as if UND could leverage an Engelstad-type relationship to further it’s NIL prospects, but who knows.

Minnesota's highest paid was Gable Steveson who had multiple NIL deals after winning an Olympic gold medal. He had a contract with WWE and has made appearances there, I'd imagine that was a big chunk of his money.

Gotcha. Sounds like Minnesota has several NILs started then.

Can anyone name one of UND’s?

Minnesota has 2 collectives. I know with the dinkytownathletes one it was just taking the initiative and getting it started. It isn't a group that has a lot of big money donors or anything they just sell memberships that people can pay monthly and will sometimes raffle off tickets or they will get a message from athletes and stuff like that as part of the membership. They just have it so members can pay at different levels per month.

Seems like something UND could do the biggest thing is just getting someone to take the initiative and organize it.

I know for a fact 6 figure NIL deals were in play for college baseball players to portal to SEC schools last summer. If that is happening in that niche sport I’m sure it is going on or will start to happen for hockey.

You are correct on the college baseball getting guys getting good $$$$ in the SEC especially at a place like LSU. However college baseball is not a niche sport in the south, in fact most of the SEC programs specifically can make money off college baseball. They are putting big money into their stadiums, facilities, and players and the fans show up down there.

What do you mean “Minnesota’s NIL”?  My understanding is that NILs need to be independent (at least financially) from the school. This is why most people are concerned that NIL will serve to benefit the Big 10/larger schools the most because they pump out 50k grads a year.

That is why Michigan already has NIL programs like:

-the licensing and apparel agreement with the Brandr Group

-the Victors Exchange program that matches businesses with student athletes

    -the champions collective, see above

-Wolverine+, the sports subscription program that pays players.

Hell, every Florida Atlantic female athlete is getting paid by the Florida Panthers.

So the idea is not that FAU, Michigan, Minnesota, or even North Dakota would be paying their players.  Instead, we need someone with the initiative to set up an exchange where:

-Jeff Tellman pays Gaber to send out tweets every Friday night to promote Grinders after the Game

-Wes Rydell pays Kleven to star in a commercial promoting Rydell Chevrolet

-[current siouxsports.com user/business owner] pays [that recruit they’re really hoping UND gets] to promote their business.

Like the folks at Michigan, can anyone tell me what UND is trying to do to get ahead of the game in NIL?

When I say Minnesota's NIL I'm talking about the collective that a group started there. It isn't directly with the school no. Minnesota's is called Dinkytown Athletes and I think they have another but I can't remember the name.

  10. I don't think NIL is near as big of factor in college hockey recruiting as a lot of people think. The NIL focus is going to football and basketball primarily from boosters. At a place like Minnesota it finds it way to some hockey but I know Minnesota's NIL is still kind of getting its feet wet and not real solid yet. The top guys that are hyped coming in like a Cooley, Eichel, or thinking back to a guy like Toews or Kessel are probably getting NIL deals from hockey companies no matter where they go. If you think boosters at Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Arizona State, etc. are focused on getting their money to hockey recruits you'd be disappointed to find out where hockey is on their priority list.

  11. A tie against a bad team

Ive seen enough of Sidorski, he always seems to be on the ice when bad things happen and brings nothing

Thought some guys found their game a little this weekend. Caulfield, Kunz, Portz, Ness, and James.

I still really don’t trust DeRidder, all over the place and seems to struggle tracking the puck at times

Well at least Fleck can still beat Nebraska.

Morgan getting hurt changed the game gotta think it was concussion related again. If that is the case you have to turn it over to AK for the rest of this season and that is probably best for the program anyway. I appreciate all Tanner has done and the way he represents Minnesota but the ceiling with Athan is so so much higher.

Sure…a wins a wins at the college level. And this is going to sound negative so I’ll take the heat, I’m a big boy :). But I was not impressed whatsoever by Omaha. They don’t come across as a good team at all. After looking at their schedule/record, oof. This is not a very good team. Nice MSU win I suppose.

Agreed, need to finish the job tonight

Yeah UND must not be a championship program anymore by the way we have celebrated recent meaningless non conference wins….

why would ASU not treat it as a big game? Why would we not? It’s a destination game so that makes it big. Beating a ranked team in their house is also big for any program. Stop trying to minimize what they did just because we lost!

I haven't seen UND celebrate any win this year really big except for the Minnesota win and that is a different situation because game winning ending goals always are.

I really don't care where the game is or whether it is a destination game or not it is just another regular season game. Games against Minnesota, Denver, Duluth, St. Cloud, and really all conference games are much higher on the priority list.

I'm not minimizing what they did I'm saying they should celebrate the win but acting like last night is the be all end all and celebrating to that extent is over the top. If you want to be a legitimate program you should have your eyes on something bigger.
