  1. Congrats to Schmidt. Thought he'd stay connected to DeBoer but having Co-Defensive Coordinators in front of him would have been a tough hurdle to overcome to jump into that spot.

A little surprising since the previous DC made $125,000 less that ES was making at Washington. Guessing the position will a bump in pay and adding FBS coordinator to his resume. And unless I'm missing it, I haven't actually seen anything that says Kurt Mattix, current SDSU DC, was let go or has taken a different job.

     flatter yourself much?

Can't understand how or why someone can spend some much time and negative energy on something that they clearly don't enjoy. Just me though.

I assume you actually can't feel as negative as you come off here but the repetitiveness of the same criticisms over and over again while comparatively offering minimal positive outlooks is grinding. In the end, we all want to see better results.

Heads tend to spin trying to keep track of everyone’s “knowledge of the game” on here.

It all comes back to we all want UND football to do well. If you enjoy 7 wins, 4 inexplicable losses, and an early playoff exit, then thus far, you probably absolutely adore UND football and good ol’ Bubba ball. Oh, and also routinely watching NDSU roll in the playoffs despite frequent coaching changes and high NFL draft departures on a regular basis.

How do we potentially change the above narrative?  Well, wait decade by decade, and make no staffing changes, because if you want anything to occur sooner, you’re asking for instant gratification, you’re too young, too inexperienced, too non – Midwestern to know how things work.

    Welcome to UND football fandom.

@petey23 from the top ropes having my back again.......smartest guy on ss.com

He has your back by explaining why NDSU ended up playing not even a non-D1 team but took it a step further and played a non-NCAA team? At least UND hasn't dropped that far in scheduling some home games.

Challenges against other conferences are a great idea. Unfortunately the other conferences have to agree to it. Fenton is already on record saying he's trying to help the conference improve their non-conference schedule, so it would seem he's on board. Can't force other conferences to do something they don't want to though.

No response or commentary is acceptable at this point other than acknowledging change is the only way forward. Of course, we’re limited by the rate of change based on unjustified extensions and mediocre expectation.

So nothing in the realistic realm because the head coach isn't getting 2 years of his contract bought out. Which is exactly what my point was.

Let's start with a home playoff win. 2 playoffs wins in the same season would be great. Natty? Baby step....in year 11.

No doubt, those are absolutely reasonable and should be attainable. We haven't hit it yet, hence the understandable collective disappointment. But I also guarantee that when that happens, there will still be complaining. Happy to be proven wrong.

bubba literally only has to outdo 5 schools now and 3 of them are within a few hours of here and a couple of them are in the middle on nowhereville with populations of next to nothing and the other school is a glorified junior college with cows strolling thru a prison like campus..........

    this shouldn't be that hard.

So directly recruiting against 3 of the top 5 teams in the nation, in an area that is "in the middle on nowhereville with populations of next to nothing", somehow makes it easier? Not sure I follow that math. We absolutely can consistently be in the top 5-10 and we've gotten close to the edge of that. A long way from where we were.

What a laughable thought, and it is particularly unfortunate we have UND “supporters” who post that malarkey and actually believe it. Prolonged mediocrity is a mindset illness run rampant here with this fan base / group of supporters.

It's all coach-speak either way but I think it is also pretty fair to assume you would have also jumped all over a "business as usual" type of response. What actual type of (realistic) reaction/commentary would have passed muster?

You pay for what you’re gonna get.

But the coaches are paid at a median level and the results, while disappointing for everyone's expectations, definitely exceed that.

It’s ridiculous, if true, but I think it is based on my interactions. This staff is burnt out. They aren’t even recognizing the instate players anymore.

I'd be curious on some actual examples of this. Spoke to a few of them in the last week and got a different vibe. They are just as or more frustrated than any fan (outside of a few who's expectations that I'm not even sure NDSU meets).

But according to @jdub27, sending emails gets results (sarcasm). :silly:

    It is simply not true.

Glad I live rent free in your head.
I've never had an issue contacting or talking to those I've wanted to give input to through email/phone calls/personal conversations. I also realize that my opinion is just that, mine. I understand what's on my mind or a I consider a priority isn't universal.
Also, commissioners can't waive a magic wand and fix something magically at a school. A bit outside the realm of their reach, unless of course they worded contracts with minimum standards in order to be eligible for payments.
Maybe you could start a GoFundMe for the schools with sub-par broadcasts to help them out?

Makes you wonder what kind of offer Kilty is getting. He’s got an impressive list already and I’m sure there is money on the table from many of them.

Hearing in line with the top of what the NDSU players were allegedly offered.

According to the list in the forum, it's not hard to see the correlation between schools with winning programs and the small number of players they have in the portal.  At least up to this point, could all change quickly.

NDSU made the semis last year and had a ton of guys transferred out.

JMU is having an amazing year and has a ton of guys in the portal.

More than just players talking about coaches?

NIL opportunities from FBS are probably a big one.  I expect Ben will get opportunities.   His frame is better built for a program that runs a 4-3

A couple guys are grad transferring that have a good shot at P5 schools with NIL money and a few underclassmen that were likely to see reduced playing time.

I wish the grad transfers (OL and DE particularly) would have stuck around one more year but I don't blame them. Outside of those who have a chance to cash in, there has maybe been on surprise one everyone else that has announced they are moving on. And I'm not even sure on that one given a few other factors. Wish them the best, hopefully they find what they are looking for (NIL money and more playing time). This is the unfortunate new reality of college football. There is a core group that needs to be kept out of the portal that don't fit that mold that would be cause for significant concern. And even then I expect one or two because college football is the wild west right now.

For this reason alone, any coach with 2 brains cells would understand the importance of that competition carrying into fall camp.

They managed it with Tommy and Quincy (who flipped his commitment from Old Dominion) for multiple seasons. QV was so bought in that he switched positions just to help the team out his senior year. He's also shown to have incredibly high level character which helps.

Other factors to consider in USD's big turnaround were that that had a killer schedule last year and I think they started out like 1-5 or something. They also didn't start starting Bauman until like the last 3-4 games of the season and the already appeared to be better with him in there, and he was a freshman. So with him getting some experience and being back.... they were set up pretty well to have a decent turnaround this year IMO.  I wouldn't have guessed 9-2 though.

Absolutely. It is almost like there is occasionally more to it than just looking at a record.
We have people flipping out because they are already assuming some sort of mythical extension for Bubba, when he at least has a winning record and playoff berths 4 of the last 5 years. And to be clear, there's no argument the postseason results have been anything but disappointing.
Just pointing out that both USD and SDSU appear to have been rewarded for loyalty. Doesn't work for everyone, but starting over isn't always the only choice.

What coaching change? Nielson is still the guy. Did they change a coordinator?

I was being facetious because USD not only kept Nielson around after going 3-8 last year and being 30-41 the previous 7 seasons, but USD also gave him an extension. And I'm not sure if you have heard (over and over and over), decisions like that are unacceptable in countless number of ways. Firing everyone and starting over is the quickest way to see improvements.

He did let go of his long-time OC and brought in the passing coordinator/WR coach from SDSU to run the offense.

At risk of being tarred and feathered, I'm going to throw a little optimism out just for fun.

South Dakota was 3-8 last year and is 9-2 this year. Who know what will happen, maybe some guys turn the corner and we get really hot next season! I'm not saying that will happen, but who knows.

See, a head coaching change can do wonders for a program!

Good on Red to bet on himself by going and playing JuCo up in the Iron Range. Glad UND was able to give him his shot at D1 football. Both parties will be better off in the future.
